Sociology Class Discussion

Well in sociology class our teacher always starts off with asking "What's new in the world today" and after this he started talking about another teacher that told him about a transman who got pregnant (I have no idea if this is true or not, does anybody know anything about this?) and it soon erupted into a huge conversation. Somehow hermamphrodites were brought up when talking about people and I immediately chimed in about intersexed people. Nobody had ever heard of intersex and started talking about how hermamphrodites have both girl and boy parts and I kept saying that not all intersex humans are equally male or female and there are many different types. Hermamphrodite is a term used for animals. Well to end our argument our teacher called the biology teacher and asked her. She said hermamphrodites don't have to have parts they just have to be male and female and it is a term for animals (like sponges) But that she had never heard of the term intersex. <_< Of course I wanted to say how I knew about all this but then I would have had to bring up this place which would mean saying "hey class, I'm TG" which I didn't want to do. At least I educated our class a little. :)

Oh and one of my classmates looked intersex up and he said that it was added in the dictionary in 2002. So is intersex a really new word or something? Is that why any adult I bring it up to has never heard of it?

Intersex people used to be referred to as hermaphrodites. Intersex is actually a relatively new term, and it is now the preferred term because of the connotations that the word hermaphrodite carries with it. Most people who are uneducated about such things still refer to intersexed people as hermaphrodites, however.

Regarding the pregnant transman, I read an article about him the other day. This is so cool! Here's the link to the article: http://www.advocate.com/issue_story_ektid52664.asp

yeah, there is a pregnant transman. in oregon i think. his name's Thomas Beattie, he and his wife decided that he would carry their child because his wife was unable to due to a previous hysterectomy. there's a link to the article on the laura's playground main page, in the news section, it's called labor of love. i would add the link, but i'm technologically stupid

also, i think intersex is a relatively new term. 2002 sounds about right.

I think hermaphrodite has be used more until recently. I think lgbt people started up intersex and now some people prefer it. Ooo spellcheck says intersex is spelled wrong. But ya I don't think its that common. I mean how often do you even say intersex? or hermaphrodite? not very often.

Although "hermaphrodite" is a rather unscientific term, it has an interesting origin...

Hermaphroditus, in Greek mythology, was a boy swimming in a lake. A girl saw him and fell in love with him. She jumped in and embraced him, and the gods blended the two in a single person, both male and female.

"Male and Female created he them" :P I like that interpretation of Adam and Eve. It means God is intersex.

Intersex means "A person who is neither totally male or totally female by virtue of a physiological marker of some kind" (could be chromosomes, certain genes, phenotype, hormone balance, hormone production, hormone receptivity/resistance etc).

HBS is not yet included (although the BSTc is considered physiological) because it doesn't have enough research and sample size to back itself up yet. Maybe eventually.

Welcome Violet.  It's been awhile since i found this space with so many who understand the struggle to simply be ourselves in a society that often disapproves,  It isn't an easy path but being together we can share all the bumps and the joys. You are not alone.   Hugs,   Charlize

I'm sorry it didn't work out for the new job. Nothing to keep you from being on the search. I had a coworker who used to walk out of the locker room saying; "I was looking for a job with I found this one and I'll keep searching for the next one. Never let them think you're comfortable and settled."   The coffee has just finished brewing, and we have a HVAC technician coming in about 30 minutes to do an annual system check.   It's time to get out of my Pj's.   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

@Sally Stone, I have enjoyed reading this thread immensely. There certainly are some things in it that I can relate to, particularly when you wrote that "I wasn’t a man trapped in a woman’s body." This simple statement confirmed two things for me; I am not an imposter here, and I could end up much further along the path than what I imagine now.   I very much look forward to your future posts here.   I hope that by posing this question I'm not committing you to spoil future posts, but can I ask, why you have settled on Bigender as a label? I keep changing my label and have no idea what it might be tomorrow or next week or next month!

This whole Cass Review thing is breaking my heart. I keep imagining how it must be to be a trans kid in the UK atm. I am halfway through reading the review so that I can effectively refute it if and when people cite it here in Australia.

One thing I took on board from a former boss who was an absolute gentleman and fluent conversationalist but a hopeless leader because he was the classic yes man to his superiors, was to take the emotion out of the equation when arguing. Don't use hyperbole. Don't exaggerate. Stick to what you know and defeat your adversary with logic. Of course, your adversary will double down and make an even bigger fool of themselves, and not even realize that they have lost the argument, nor will they realize that people are laughing at them and not with them. It also helps if you can separate them from their minions.   A conservative elderly uncle, who left school at the age of 12, swears black and blue that taking Ivermectin (sheep dip) prevents Covid because he knew someone who knew someone else who took it and despite that person being momentarily in close contact with people who had Covid, didn't come down with it. "Well, you're the one with the science degree!" I said.   A lot of people argue out of ignorance. They base their points on populism and rumor. I rarely argue, but when I do, it is in an attempt to push back. Another favorite saying that I use is "Rumors are started by haters, spread by fools and believed by idiots." I then ask, "Which two are you?" 😉

Good morning, all!!! Cloudy today with some light rain coming. Not a day to work outside.   I will vacuum the house and the head out to our local hardware store after I get cleaned up. Time to buy a new bird feeder for the back porch.   I'm sorry the job didn't work @KymmieL! Hang in there.   It sounds like a busy time for you at work @Willow. Finding reliable people is so hard these days.   Time for another cup of coffee before I start cleaning!!   Enjoy this beautiful day we've been given.
