Weed While On Hrt

Guest Mikku

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, first time posting in this thread :3

i dont smoke (or ingest) weed at all, but i have a mtf friend who does, extremelly frequently and i keep trying to tell her its a bad idea to be doing this while on HRT, are these feelings well placed or just somewhat well placed?

i know its "not a good idea" just as its never a good idea while on any other meds, but i mean are there any SPECIFIC reasons why it could be counterproductive to the hrt's effects? thanks for any info if anyone has any!

Honey...

Here are a few things that pot does to a female....

Take note of the increased Testosterone levels and that female hormones are repressed....things that you'd not want as a MTF...

Increase in testosterone levels for women and increased risk of infertility

Just as in Males, marijuana effects the female in the part of the brain that controls the hormones, which determines the sequence in the menstrual cycle. Its been said that females who smoked or used marijuana on a regular basis had irregular menstrual cycles, the female hormones were depressed, and the testosterone level was raised. Even though this effect may be reversible, it may take several months of no marijuana use before the menstrual cycles become normal again.

And of course the biggest reason?

It's illeagal...

I wouldn't have thought there would be much of a problem, unless it was smoked with tabacco obviously. Cannabis isn't as deadly as some people would like you to believe.

Link to comment

i never said it was deadly, i hang around my freinds all the time who smoke, i have no problem with it morally, BUT the thing is i feel it can negatively affect MTF hormones, and thanks for that info DJ.

(this makes some sense, cause i have a ftm freind who smokes all the time, and it doesnt seem to affect him at all but that would explain why) :)

I'm with you on the illegal part (although everyone -including the cops to a degree- seem to forget that on a college campus), but the menstrual problems wouldn't affect an MTF because we don't have cycles anyway. And as far as infertility goes, HRT does the same thing.

a l0tta recent scientific research links use of pot and weed with hypoestrogenisation in girls delayed puberty (as in hormones work less for MtF) TESTOSTERONE SPIKES (which in MtF means your t messes you up more and in FtM can result in cancellation of your mones) , upset development cycles in both physical sexes and disturbed hormonal/menstural cycles too, translation HRT is less effective and takes longer to make said changes. It is also a long term depressant meaning the worst possible thing for any transfolks to take. Add to that lowered sex drive in males or FtM and you can see why MtF or FtM drugs ar soooo not a good idea.

Maybe she's just trying to increase bust size... (see available research on males). J/K Actually, if she's like I used to be she is trying to escape Reality temporarily. I learned along the way that my belief was wrong. What I was really trying to escape was "me". When I can back from each little vacation I was still stuck with...me. I don't need to escape from me any longer. Chronic use of the Chronic-not good. I think I could very easily lose sight of whats real and whats illusion in the Trans World if I was stoned all the time. Maybe fall down a rabbit hole and never come back.

Smoking anything is not a good idea for anyone. Period. But for anyone who is taking estrogen it can be disastrous.

I recently was talking with my doctor about pain management. Apparently, marijuana is the best painkiller for some circumstances. But the doctor also said that it is not advised by the AMA to prescribe anything that requires smoking. He did prescribe cesamet. It is in capsule form. I looked it up and it is a canabinol closely related to weed. It works in exactly the same way.

My concern here is that I wasn't aware that it might affect my hormones. Better check into that.

The high doses of estrogen pre-op MtF women get to take predisposes them to blood clots in the lungs, so smoking ANYTHING is a bad idea. Not qualified to say how it would twink with the hormones, but thought it would put out weak phytoestrogens that would interfere with the high-test ones you're popping in pill form. Phytoestrogens can shut out your real estrogens by blocking the receptor site with a weaker substitute, I'm given to understand (and why I likes my soy...heheh)

I won't deny I used to burn a little rope socially in my younger days, but...between my asthma, my depressive disorder and random pee tests for my job....SO not worth it. Pot will add to depression if used more than a tiny bit in very rare while, the same as alcohol. It will likely give you the munchies, leading to weight gain.

(and if they ever legalize it nationwide, I am investing all I can in Frito-Lay stock and whoever makes Little Debbie snack cakes. B) )

But, yeah, it's not good for you to smoke, it's not good to use pre-op, it can have negative side-effects, and it's illegal, so I can't in good conscience recommend it. You might get busted or something. Besides that, being illegal, you don't know what's in it. And that could be BAD.

I would like to point out that I would have starved myself to death (and hence not be alive to take hrt) if it wasn't for weed. For quite a few years it was the only way I could trick myself into eating instead of trying to make myself skinnier. (I have more than one type of dysphoria)

My mother, being a medical doctor, has pointed out to me that weed is medically less harmful than tobacco or alcohol.

How about you have a desire to starve yourself for weeks on end and try and tell me that weed is bad?

On another note, I have a close friend I met some pride event years ago who is an AIDS activist and is HIV positive himself. He has been using weed in both natural and pill form for medical purposes for years. He (a cisgendered man) has actually grown breasts as result of the heavy medical use. (I figured I'd throw that fact out there) Weed has shown in quite a few studies to cause breast growth.

Where I'm going with this or what I'm concluding, I've completely forgot, but I don't think the issue of weed is completely cut and dry either way.

When my mom found out I was taking hormones (and having some knowledge of estrogen being an OBGYN) said she didn't worry if I smoked weed but urged me to quit smoking tobacco cigarettes. She also encouraged me to quit drinking. She also told me to quit opiates and benzodiazopines, (but that one she had already really been stressing for a while before.)

One little point if I may, women voting was once illegal as were labor unions. In some points in history in some countries dancing was illegal.

There was a time in the U.S. when the Jim Crowe Laws were the law in the south. Slavery has been legal at times throughout most of history. Child labor has been legal.

Let us not forget the three items of gender clothing laws that once existed here in the USA. Oh, did I mention that the laws banning sodomy were only deemed unconstitutional by the supreme court within the last decade or two?

My point is human history is a history of getting morals, ethics, laws, rules, etc dead wrong. Illegal=/=Wrong

"When injustice becomes law, the just must become outlaws"

To make my statement obvious, being illegal should never be the biggest reason. Commonsense, common good, or just what is the right thing to do should be the biggest reason for anything.

So now I will step down off my soap box since I hate standing on it any how.

Ciao,

Esperanza

Esperanza,

Your mother is a wise woman. I find myself agreeing with your take on the weed issue. The problem with weed to me is that it feels good and therefore is potentially abused and overused. Moderation is the key to most things in life that become too good for our own good and moderation can be very difficult. It is hard to evaluate what is OK and what is too much and usually one doesn't find out they are doing "too much" until it is "too late".

As for the benzodiazapines the problem there is that estrogen potentiates them (causes them to be more effective) so dosages are screwed up as your hormone levels change and you can overdose without realizing it.

It is easy to jump to conclusions about these things and folks often do. Usually their positions are based on their overall attitude about the subject and not necessarily on any scientific information about it. I doubt there are many studies for marijuana and hormones (either E or T) being used together, so the scientific resources are few and far between and our source of information becomes the old wives tales told over the back fence.

The best strategy I find with weed is, don't buy your own. It's relatively difficult to get, so there's no impulse purchasing. If someone offers it to you, go ahead and enjoy some with your friend. It won't have any major effects on your hormones unless it's significant usage, or any other major effects on you.

That said, I don't have an addictive personality, so I can quit anything non-physically addicting very easily. So if you are the addictive personality, maybe just stay away.

I personally think weed's generally less harmful than alcohol, ought to be legal, and it has medicinal uses.

(Besides the fact that locking up pot smokers is usually a waste of taxes)

But this lady's inhaling burnt stuff, so that's a probable carcinogen, possible causer of COPD if she smokes enough (although to be fair, that takes an awful lot of marijuana), and she's doing it habitually. It's not the safest consumption pathway and it is explicitly recreational.

Reality vacations are occasionally good, but when you're never home, you have a problem.

Well I might be wrong , but this is my take on it.

I don't think it is just weed and HRT that is a bad combination, it is smoking (Period) and hrt that is the bad combination.

HRT has a serious side effect that it tends to cause Clots in your blood , and possible DVT (Deep vein thrombosis)

The place it shows up first are the smallest veins.

Those are in your, lungs, lower legs, and brain.

Of course when a clot hits your brain it is usually too late :(

Smoking will mask most clotting that other wise you would notice in in your respiratory system.

It is important to report and difficulty breathing to you Dr when you are on HRT.

Couldnt agree more, the only thing though is that. Like every other drug, every individual usin it reacts to it in a diffrent way.

That being said, weed for some people is a gateway drug. Not sayin marijuana is bad, Coz i smoke more than necessary

Just know what your smokin an how it'll impact your HRT. ;)

Smoking isn't "wrong". Yes, it's a poor health decision, but it could be a great social, mental health, or artistic decision as well. Great inspiration has been known to come from the marijuana.

Personally, I don't see very much inherently wrong with marijuana.

Yes I know it's still illegal in most parts of the world, though honestly alcohol is more harmful in many ways... would actually say most ways.

This is coming from a person who's smoking days are long behind her, I've not smoked in a good four or five years and never plan to again (in the interest of full disclosure, even when I did smoke it was more of a once every three or four month sort of thing)

I do however drink a nice well made beer on occasion and will still readily admit that alcohol is worse for a person in my opinion.

I have friends that still smoke on a regular basis and some are active in trying to reform marijuana laws.

I support their cause, even if the partaking of it isn't for me.

As a final note, don't know if it's such good idea while on HRT.. that's the only caveat I have about it's use.

well although i dont smoke anymore when i started t, im ftm, i asked my endo if there were any risks to me smoking on hrt and he told me it wouldnt affect my results at all. so thats all the input i have, idk if its dif for mtf

my endo wasnt too concerned that i smoked pot he told me there were no studies done on this but he did say that pot might still have tar in it so blood clots is still an issue and he said the same thing that it would have no affect on what we were trying to do he did say if i do smoke pot to take an asprin

btw im not promoting pot use just relating what my doctor had said

By which I mean there is a cultural stereotype of what a man is, and one of what a woman is.  Even worse, of what a transgender person is.   You be you.   I read of a boy who thought he was a girl because he did not adhere to some (rather toxic) conceptions of what it means to be a man, so he decided he was a girl.  He was told he didn't have to conform to stereotype and got happy. "You mean I don't have to transition?" He didn't want to, and was relieved.   Once upon a time if you were transgender they told you either you transition or die.   Incorporate the best of what it means to be a man and the best of what it means to be a woman as much as you possibly can, and let the rest go.  Be fully human. Be alive. Don't conform to some cultural crud.

On the way back to her desk she was interrupted by six short, urgent conversations that had to be attended to. Then she slipped into the women's room and locked the stall door.  She took a deep breath, then another, and allowed herself to shake for five minutes,  Then deep breathing, ten in and ten out, stretch up, touch the floor, neck rolls and she was fine. She used the toilet and a woman knocked and said, "Taylor, are you okay?"   "Ready to conquer the world!"  on her way out she found her makeup was fine.  Three stalls, two sinks.  If she ever designed a women's room with three stalls, there would be four sinks, with plenty of space to plunk your stuff down between them.   She met a deferential Karen.  "Here is the branding I came up with," she said.  And she went back to working as hard as Brenda and Mary, who looked up worriedly and then went back to the proposal.   Shortly before 5:00 she received an email with the title Consolidation and Compensation.  In it she learned that the position of office manager was eliminated, and the current office manager was to become the chief executive officer. The former CEO, along with the CFO, the chief legal officer, and sundry staff, had been terminated, per the Board of Directors.  Effective immediately everyone would receive a base salary of $20,000 with a commission to be set by the individual's supervisor.  Each supervisor would be given a certain percentage to distribute.  Most functions they had been handled would be outsourced as needed.   "The question of what profit was made last year is frequent enough to be answered.  The company lost over 500,000 in fiscal 2023.  At this point further cuts are not anticipated.  We will be strategically adding positions that will enhance our profits. Hard work is expected of everyone."   Her two web guys had been complaining because their games had been remotely uninstalled.  After the memo came out they were absolutely silent.  That gave her an idea, and after an exchange of emails they were reassigned to maintenance out at the plant, effective tomorrow morning.  There were lots of weeds that needed pulling, if nothing else. That email went out after they left early, for the day.  The maintenance foreman was a no-nonsense type who did not tolerate slacking, and they would learn a thing or two.  This also freed up two spaces for her to put new people.

You have given you and us a big clue right there.  I hope you have shared this observation with your Endocrinologist and are willing to take their advice about changing that behavior.    Non prescribed herbal or animal supplements can have a negative effect on your body's use of your available hormones.  Also, your genetics are going to be controlling what your body is going to do with your hormones, and again, that is for you to consult with your Endocrinologists.  On this site none of us are licensed medical personnel and we cannot give you advice on your health more than what your doctor can.  We have rules that we enforce against our members advising about "Folk Remedies" because we have had members who have gone that route and badly damaged their health and quality of life.  Only thing I can go anywhere on, is that maybe if you change your expectations of what should happen, you will at least not be in danger of harming yourself from anxiety.

Hi lovely people,   I'm a 25 yo MtF woman, and I've been suffering from low estrogen issues since October 2023. I completely lost my feminine libido, my breast completely stopped growing, my estrogen levels dropped by a lot (despite NOT decreasing my E dosage) and thus my dysphoria drastically increased. I think it is worth mentioning that, for my health issues, I had been taking ----- Lamotrigine for months & had been on ketogenic diet, and these things seem to be a culprit of my current issue. I weaned off Lamotrigine some time ago and gave up on keto diet, but it still doesn't seem to help. My estrogen is still low (44 ng/ml) and my libido hasn't come back yet. In general, I struggle with my dysphoria so much because of that and, to be honest, I don't know what to do. I've tried so many dietary supplements, yet I didn't get any effects from them. My endocrinologist didn't know how to help me. She only suggested to increase my daily estrogen dose (to 3x per day ------sublingual estrogen tablets and 3x per day ------ estrogen gel applied to armpits or thighs), which I did, without any effect.   Please, help me. Prior to keto diet & Lamotrigine treatment, I'd never had experience like that. I'm basically helpless and have no clue what to do. Having to deal with low estrogen is a horrible experience to me and it affects my life severely.   BTW, my T levels are always within female range.   Do you have any clue what exactly I should do?

One of our cats is polydactyl.  He has 7 toes on each front paw and 5 on each back paw, for 24 toes total.   Another one, an ex-feral who, at the time, was free to roam, climbed 50 feet up a tree without having any thought about how he was going to get down.  His pal climed down backwards, but he couldn't.  He ended up coming down by leaping from branch to branch.  Which nearly gave us heart attacks, because he only has one eye and therefore has no depth perception.   The other ex-feral (both are now indoor cats) obviously does not have those soft pads on his feet.  At night, when we are in bed, we can hear him stomping around the house.

The two o'clock Onshoring meeting was going well.  Taylor was leading, inviting other people up to speak on their specialties. Aerial photogrammetry and surveying, including the exact boundary, were out for contract signature  Gibson had handled that - Manufacturing was supposed to, but somehow hadn't happened.  Legal issues from Legal. Accounting reported on current costs, including all upkeep, guard salaries, etc.  Manufacturing was supposed to give those numbers, but they hadn't.   The downside was the VP of Manufacturing.  He had arrived at the meeting red-faced, his tie askew, clutching a bottle. It smelled strongly of vodka. He had never done anything in his twenty years of being VP of Manufacturing, and he did not like being asked now.   "Mr. ----, do you have the inventory we asked for?" Taylor asked politely.  VP Gibson had asked him to have his people go through the plant and not only inventory but assess the operational status of every piece of equipment.  They needed to know what they had. "I'm not going to take any f---- orders from a g-d- tra---," he snarled. "God knows what kind of perverts it has dragged into our fair city and bangs every night." "That is completely out of line." That was Gibson.  Taylor controlled herself.  That was a shot at Bob, not just at Taylor.  She was glad Bob was not there to do something stupid.  Had Mrs. McCarthy been talking? What had she said?  Was she given to embellishment?  Taylor took a deep breath. "I'm not sorry.  You f--- can take this stupid onshoring --- and shove it up your -" "That is quite enough."  This was the head of HR. "You can take your sissy ways and sashay -" "You are fired." "You can't fire me." "Oh, yes I can," said the office manager.  The VP took another swig from his bottle. "Try it."  He looked uncertain. "I will have you removed.  Are you going to leave on your own?  I am calling the police to help you leave." And he dialed the number. He stomped out cursing. They heard him noisily go down the hall.  This was the front conference room.  He actually went through security and out the door, throwing his badge on the ground on his way.  The guard picked it up. They could see this through the glass wall. "Can you fire a VP?" "The Board told me that if anyone gives me problems they should be shown the door. Even a VP.  I can fire everyone here. I won't, of course. Those were problems." "Are you alright, Taylor?" She nodded.  "I've heard worse.  Shall we continue?" And they did.   The last item was that certain business people in China had been arrested, and the corporation that had been supporting them all these years had been dissolved.  They were on their own, and the Board was dead serious on straightening things out.  After this meeting, Taylor believed it.  She did not attend the meeting to discuss how to distribute the few duties the VP of Manufacturing had done.  That was ultimately up to the Board.
    • Abigail Genevieve
Lunch was at Cabaret, still free.  The place was quiet: it was the sort of place you took a business client to impress them, and the few other people were in business suits.  Most of the legal profession was there.   She told him of the morning's frustrations, breaking her own rule about confidentiality.  She asked Karen how the branding was going, and Karen had snapped back that she had not started on it yet - they had all these proposals.  Taylor had explained that it was important, for the two o'clock meeting, and Karen told her to do it herself.  Karen pointed out that Taylor could not touch her - her uncle was on the Board and her brother was VP of Manufacturing.  Nor would the two computer guys go out to the plant - they were playing some kind of MMORPG and simply not available. If she wanted the pictures, she should go.  Mary prayed an Ave Maria, but both she and Brenda were racing to get the proposal out. The client wanted it Friday for review.   She didn't bring up what Mrs. McCarthy had told her.  She wasn't sure how to approach it.  She thought of telling her of a 'something more comfortable' she had bought in case he ever DID show up at her door. It was in the bottom drawer of her dresser, ready to go.  Instead she talked about moving to a place with a garage.  Several of the abandoned houses had one, and they had been maintained well with China cash.   Bob had finally realized that when he was introduced as Bob, Taylor's boyfriend, that was just how things were done here. Other people had introduced each other in terms of family relationships, which were strong.  Long before you found out anything else about someone, you knew how they were related.  Family kept people from leaving Millville.    "What is the real name of this town, anyway?"   She laughed.  "I am trying to find that out.  It's 'Welcome to Millvale' when you come into town from the north, and 'Welcome to Millville' on the south.  I have counted two other variants."   "What a town. Roosevelt is like that, with the families, but there is only one spelling."
