My First Female Haircut...

I have had my hair cut by my mom almost all my life. The few times I went to a barber shop I usually just got a basic short haircut. I've never been able to find a style that I like, and sometimes feel self-conscious about my hair. I have fairly short hair right now, about 2 inches and straight but I would like to experiment with getting a more...feminine hair style but now that I am out on my own I don't know what to do. What are some short-straight hairstyles you all like? And where should I go, a barber shop or a hair saloon/stylist??? I'm sure I will feel awkward the first time so if anyone has some advice or experience it would be greatly appreciated. Its SO much easier to just get a buzz cut and be done with it, haha. :P

Hi Jenny,

IMO the best alternative is to let your hair grow longer and don't go anywhere to have it cut until it needs trimmed. That could take months.

Yeah Ide suggest letting it grow if at all possible. Its been over a year now and I still haven't had mine touched. Starting to need it though. So yeah if you could just try and let it grow. If you can't try looking up pixie cuts and things like that. It might be something you would be interested in.

It's different for us now is it not? I mean we want to let our femaleness out and see where it goes. I suggest a hair stylist, a good one. You should explain your goals, out to them, and see what she or he recommends. And then always go back to the same person. Hair grows an average of 1/2" a month. So you could expect 6" growth in a year, but, actually, they cut a minimal off each time, so 4" is probably what you will get. And according to the goals you want, it will be evened up and possibly layered, to get a more feminine style. But a barbershop wouldn't do this, you see where I am taking this?

Definitely go to a stylist. You can call and just get a consultation at most salons. You sit with a stylist who looks at your hair's texture and your face shape and makes some suggestions. She or he will have books that you can look at together, but it's better to go in with some pictures you've found in magazines and the like. If you go in with some idea of what you want, the stylist can steer you to styles that work with your hair and face.

Don't be shy to go to a salon. Most of them are unisex anyway. Many in larger areas (and even some small towns) are used to all kinds of clients, so they probably won't bat an eye if you just go in with confidence. It's not quite the same atmosphere as a barbershop where they really do expect mostly male clients getting basic haircuts. Most professional stylists enjoy making people look their best and many get a kick out of doing artsy cuts and the like.

If you're too shy for the all-out girl cut, look for some androgynous models/rock stars/movie stars and take one of those photos in with you.

I didn't finish typing and the cat walked on the keyboard. Anyway, look at the feminine haircuts for inspiration.

Having said all of that, I do agree with the folks who are saying to let your hair grow out a bit before you get it cut. The stylist will have more to work with. Women tend to keep their hair trimmed and in shape, though, so don't get too too shaggy unless you're going to eventually go for long hair.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I am planning on going to a hair salon sometime this week. Maybe I will put up some pictures to see what you think! :)
