Eating Disorder

Hi. So, in August of last year, I stopped eating and started to work out for four hours a day. I was obsessed with being skinny. My parents noticed this and I tried to hide the fact that I was anorexic. I never was formally diagnosed because when I talked to a specialist, I had gained weight and was not concerned with my weight.

That was in January. But now, I think anorexia still has not left me alone. Now, instead of being obsessed with being skinny, I’m obsessed about building muscle. I literally only eat foods high in protein. I don’t know if this is an eating disorder or me wanting to be more muscular. My mom is worried because of my eating patterns and me lifting weights for about three hours a day. So my question to you is, do you think I have an eating disorder?

Thanks

Jesse

Jesse I would say that if you are worried then there is a possibility. This is something know to reoccur frequently. But we are not therapists or Drs. and can't really advise you.

Please see a therapist or your Dr. asap. Eating disorders can do permanent damage to your body and be fatal far faster than many realize. The longer it lasts the harder it is to treat I have also heard.

It's serious -so please be safe and get a professional opinion

Jesse, mate, there are more eating disorders than just anorexia and bulimia and I'd say that anything that causes you to obsess over food and exercise and have unhealthy eating patterns would count as some kind of eating disorder. As Johnny has said though, we aren't medically trained and can only give personal opinions not medical advice or diagnosis. You really need to seek professional help and be brutally honest about your diet, exercise patterns and thoughts concerning both. It might help if you kept a diary of your eating and exercise and what thoughts you are having for a few days before you consult a doctor so you can show them because, especially when you're in the grip of a disorder, it can be difficult to assess accurately ourself.

Trust me when I say that disordered eating and exercise patterns can have more of a bad effect on your body than you think and it could defeat it's own purpose by adversely effecting the male body and life that you're aiming for so please do try to get help to break these patterns.

Thanks for the words of advise. I have told my mom what is going on and she is setting up a meeting with my doctor. Hopefully I can break those patterns. At first I only wanted to by muscular but now I understand how much it might affect me.
