Things to do...

So here I am, a week or two after a year after GRS, and I’m mostly good with where everything is in my life…mostly. The thing is, as I become more and more comfortable in my skin and embrace just being, there are still edges that need shaping, things to do so that I no longer have to ask myself if there are any things left to do.

For starters, I’ve been overweight for years and, as such, my neck has been covered by a layer or two of fat that has kept whatever I might have that resembles an Adam’s Apple hidden from view. But over the last 5 months, I’ve been very committed to a slow and steady weight loss plan, using the LoseIt app on my phone (It works if you use it and if you need something to report to everyday. It keeps you honest with yourself.). And I’ve lost 25lbs thus far. I still have a ways to go, but I am happier with my body. But I do see that layer of fat around my neck receding and I’m afraid that when I near my goal weight, that which has been hidden shall be revealed. I’ve already checked with Meltzer (his office is 30 minutes away from my home) and I’m looking at around $3,500 for the tracheal shave.

This bit worries me most of all because if I lose all the weight I want to lose and suddenly my svelte neck reveals what I would prefer remain hidden, I would suddenly have this horrible indicator which, for the moment, I do not. It is worrisome and, as such, I worry.

Yet another fun expenditure! And I’m all out of student loans to procure…

Oh, and there’s the hair. At work, I wear a wig that blends well with my hair to cover up the age related damage. When not at work, I generally wear a head band or a scarf and my hair stylist and I have found a nice look with bangs that works for me. But I do wish I could eschew the bands and scarves. That means a transplant and that’s around $10K.

Did I mention I’m a teacher?

Those are the major things. I still check in for electrolysis for an hour a month and one or two places still have the old name and I’m still holding off on the birth certificate (partially because of the cost and partially because California has a bill in the works to simplify the change – which will cost substantially less).

The thing is, as long as there are things to do, I won’t really feel like I’m done with this. I’d really like to be done with this and if I had the cash, I would be, which I suppose puts me in the same boat as anyone else who would be done if not for money.

So it goes.

I think anyone who did not transition as a child is going to have a great many issues to resolve as time passes. GRS is just one of many things.

Do what you can and focus on the good in your life. It's all any of us can do. :)

It is indeed the little worrisome details that start to sneak up on you Post Op. In the rush and excitement of the "Big Job" we do not see them, or happily say "I can do that later". "Later" does in fact sneak up on us and the less glamorous parts of the project come up on top of us at last. I still have bills in my old name a year later. Thank all the stars my hair is not an issue though.

Hang in there! Great that you are loosing weight-isn't that a miserable process! Too bad about the hair.Seems like there is always SOMETHING,doesn' it? But if you persist you will triumph in the end. Good Luck.

It's funny with photos isn't it, how we think we look in them vs. how we actually do look in them! I'm hopeless at smiling and I have to try really hard not to frown or look like a zombie. I'm never sure how I come across to others.   I had a moment late last night when my eldest daughter facetimed my wife for some now forgotten reason, and when I was handed the tablet and talking to her, I was fixated on my image in the corner. My hair was wild at the time, I was a bit tipsy and all I saw was a woman! I have no idea what she saw in that context. I'll probably never know.

I hope to see you on the Zoom meeting tonight, April.  I might be late, since I am doing lights and sound for a play that opened last night.  I was home before ten last night, so I think I'll be able to make it.   Today is an anniversary for me.  Seven years ago today, I stood up at the weekly community kaffeeklatsch as <deadname> and announced that henceforth I would be Kathy.  It went as well as I could have imagined: there were some surprised looks, but no hostility and lots of support.  A whole layer of stress disappeared that day and has never come back.  (There have been other stresses, but that one is gone.)  I have been me full-time ever since that moment.

This is a scarily accurate description of what I feel!   I hope I don't sound too schmaltzy by saying this, but I remember when I signed up to this forum last year, during the sign-up process the question is asked, "Why do you want to join TransPulse?" to which I wrote, "Looking for a home where I can freely write about my issues and interact with similar people."    I think I just found one. ❤️

Good morning, everyone!! I was up early again - already on my third cup of coffee having walked/fed the dog and read the local paper.   We have a birthday party for a friend to go to this afternoon but no real plans otherwise.   I hope to be able to attend tonight's TGP Zoom session. It's been weeks since I've been able to participate with the illness/loss of our dog, two horrible colds in succession and our trip to chase the solar eclipse.   Have a wonderful day and look for the goodness in it.

I think we tend to be overly critical of our looks, whether we're trying to express ourselves as masculine, feminine or anywhere along the gender spectrum. For me, I use photos as a way to track my progress, to help me find my style and look and to help me find ways to improve myself in posture, looks, make-up, style......   I didn't really think about our FB avatar being public but then realized that when people search they do see it.   Since I'm not out to anyone but my wife, therapist, priest and people here, my FB page remains "that guy." I have created a Bitmoji that is relatively androgynous moving slowly towards the feminine. Long gray hair, earrings, softer features...I'm transitioning it along with myself. :-)
