Reviews of Hair Removal Services?

Howdy,

Does anyone know any good internet resources for reviews of salons or hair-removal services to see how trans* friendly they are? I've got enough $$ to start with laser (and based on skin tone / hair color should be a good candidate for it), but I don't have enough saved up to be able to afford to burn some on a bad service. Yelp and places like that are only moderately helpful.

I would suggest that you give us a general location. I'm sure you'll get some suggestions if someone has experience in your area.

Hugs,

Experienced and well-connected gender therapists, as well as community activists, will likely know of supportive and welcoming LHR shops or electrologists. Those kind of recommendations are to me of more value than Internet reviews.

You can likely find a local electrologist who will be happy to work with you. It is not cheap, but electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal process.

I agree with Carolyn, word of mouth, especially from someone that has been to a local salon in your area is quite valuable. Support groups would be a possible place to get an "in person" recommendation for facial hair removal salons in your area. You can also ask here like Charlie says, someone in your area might answer you.

The one I choose to work with was on a word of mouth basis, I was not disappointed.

Good luck

My previous post, and the link I provided were censored.

Please post again Gina, if the link was removed for what ever reason, the Moderator that removed it will list the action and you will see it. In this case I see no Moderator action listed in your post. It may have just been an incomplete posting for what ever reason.

Ah, OK. In my previous post, I mentioned that if I had the money, I would go to E3000, where they do a full day session of electrolysis. This sentence, and the link appear to have been removed. Here is the link to E3000:

Edit.

Google search the words e3000 electrolysis That will take you to the site

If there is a LGBT center in your area, look at their website for local resources. That is how I found mine and also by word of mouth. I couldn't be happier with my choice. My electrologist is also transgender MtF and she even recommended me to someone for laster so the laser can take care of the dark hairs and the electrolysis can deal with the light hairs and whatever the laser will miss. It's working out great so far.

Also if there is a local LGBT therapist in your area, many times that will have a site. Last but not least, look at Yelp comments for different places. I've seen a few where someone in the comments section will say they are transgender friendly.

I've been looking at Precision Hair Removal in the Chicago area.  They have a page on their site specific to transgender and offer discount packages.

I have posted in a few threads, that I have been to PHR several times. I LOVE them. I tell Irena and Dan that they have changed my life, at it is no exaggeration. A long time ago, I had a really terrible experience with Electrology 2000, which became E3000. Everyone's mileage varies but E2000 was a disaster for me. I was very wary to go to PHR, but I felt I had no choice. Weekly visits to my local electrician (sic) were just not making a dent. I totally recommend PHR...

Thanks @KatieP  That makes me feel better about it.  Still not sure about their all day sessions but it's a 3hr round trip, so getting there every couple weeks would be difficult.

I hear you. And, I FLY from San Diego to Chicago for this. I factor the travel and hotel and such as part of the costs of removing the hair. For me, going once a week just does not work since I was foolish enough to go FT before having at least most of the hair gone.

YMMV, but I don't think you can do better than PHR...

As an aside, you would either have to have some drive with you, or you would have to spend the night after in a nearby hotel. They don't let you drive a car for 24 hours after the twilight meds...

I was lucky and was able to get an electrolysis appointment for this Thursday and Friday.  It sounds like Thursday is going to be a 5AM until who knows and Friday will be from noon.  I'm driving down Wednesday for the moisturizing facial.  Looks like it's going to be a long weekend.  A bit apprehensive about it but I've made my mind up I'm going to go through with it.

It is going to hurt. AND you will be fine. And it will move you significantly towards your goal!!

Remember the goal!

Good luck!!!

IMHO, I’d be less worried about whether they’re trans-friendly (I suspect most are) and more worried about the quality of the service, which ranges quite a bit. Of course, the above advice still stands. Good luck! Sounds like you’ve found an electrolysist! I hope they’re good for you!

The place is very trans friendly, they have web pages just for trans people.  The staff is highly trained and I have had several recommendations, some from people on this list.  One of the reasons I chose this clinic, even with the distance to travel, is that there will be very little pain because of their use of multiple types of anesthetic.  I guess my apprehension is just a general feeling since this is such a being, and expensive, step for me.  It's the first permanent step I'll make towards transition.

Leaving in an hour for the trip to Chicago.

This is what I look like after 8 hours of electrolysis.  They told me I look pretty good compared to some people.  The good part is that there was absolutely no pain during the procedure and none so far afterwards.  We'll see what the night brings on.    Tomorrow brings the second session.  Whoopee

I am thinking the blood parts are the needle injection sites?

As for the swelling, I don't think you look bad AT ALL! Puffy upper lip and a bit more jowl. ?

And, look at that! The top half of your face is clear...

It is a slow journey, but there IS an end...

An interesting aspect of this place is that the doctor starting the med drip is a plastic surgeon specializing in FFS.  Every patient leaves with a folder promoting his practice.  He calls his FFS patients his Z girls  being that's the initial of his last name.  He definitely has an ego   Even so, a nice guy. It's just I won't have surgery outside of a hospital.
