I'm just catching up after about a 5 day hiatus. My thoughts are with all of you.

I was at a women entrepreneur retreat with 14 of us staying at a massive "summer home" of one of the DuPont family that was converted to a retreat center. Started on Monday. By the time we left Thursday it was clear we had a covid problem.  We are up to 8 out of 14 people testing positive or sick.  Including me.  I feel like -crap-. Just as bad, I'm missing the opera performance I have been looking forward to and had to cancel my electrolysis trip to Chicago.  All of us were boosted. I'm double boosted.  I think the virus is winning the war on immunization vs mutations.

The CORONA virus mutates pretty rapidly and our response was pretty lackluster. Honestly I think this is going to end up being one of those things that mutates and just becomes part of our viral landscape like colds or the flu.

In other news, I've got the ick and I've been coughing up mucus for the last couple of days. My voice went away on the day I was supposed to have my job interview. I was game to try anyway, but the department head says I need to be able to talk. Hopefully I'll be good to go by Monday.

Hugs!

It certainly looks that way.  I haven't had the 2nd booster.  Don't know if I can get it.  The VA hasn't said anything.  I'm definitely over 65 tho.

Hi

@Bri2020 wow even double boosted and you got it.  I guess that tells me I need to be more careful in public.  I haven’t worn a mast except at medical appointments since they were lifted.

@Jackie C. I guess you are unfortunately right.  This is just going to keep on mutating and will become the new norm.  At least the flu and pneumonia even shingles are controlled if you are willing to take the shots.  I have no issue getting poked.  Heck I poke myself every two weeks.  I really don’t understand the anti Vaxers.  If they have a history of problems, so be it, but to fight the idea of getting the vaccine just because.?

oh well.  I hope you get over it really quickly with no long Covid problems.

If I can get my insurance figured out, my therapist and my HRT provider (at HB) have already told me they would write letters. I, too, have an endocrine disorder. Do you think that you could get the letter to reflect GD if that's what your insurer requires?

That's a good question. The letter from my therapist has a GD diagnosis on it but yeah, HB (same place I'm using) has my HRT under the same "endocrine disorder". Surly they know and have work around for it.

Our group of covid has reached 9 now with another 2 saying they will probably test positive in a day or two based on how they feel.

3 days in I can't break this fever. Advil/tylenol round the clock and I can only get it down to 99. The body aches have diminished at least. I've been having to change my nightshirt in the middle of the nights due to soaking them in sweat.  I didn't think this would kick my butt like it is. Everyone I know that caught it before and had boosters basically just felt run down for a day or two or didn't have any symptoms. I have a very busy week ahead that's going to have to be rearranged.  Lots of interviews for real estate brokerages plus I'm supposed to interview 2 people for my business.

FWIW, my current soon-to-be ex-wife has been working as a school nurse for several years. The standard for keeping a child out of school for a fever is 100.4+. So even though you still feel like (bad word of your choice), 99 is certainly acceptable. Get well soon and go out and continue to kick ***.

Hugs

Hannah

Kids tend to spike higher temps. The 100.4 is a historical number that seems to still be hanging around. It is the threshold for typical bacterial infections or the flu. Below that number was typically viruses like colds and schools and work environments didn't want you staying home for colds.  My normal is pretty much 97.4 so if I'm hitting 99 I am feeling like -crap-.

All that said, my fever finally broke around noon today and I'm back into the 97s where I belong!

@HollyNG glad to hear things are going so well for you!

Had an interesting conversation with my wife today. Even after nearly a year on hormones she is still struggling with getting my pronouns right, not saying she isn’t trying she’s just still struggling. So we talked today and I asked her if it would be easier for her to use they/them for me. I’m not non-binary but as I told her it would be better than calling me he. She said she thought it would, so I said fine. The interesting part is that since that conversation, she has been bouncing between they and she for me. Only once today has she called me he and that one was actually kinda funny. She ran through nearly every pronoun before getting “they” out.

Small steps are still steps. I’ll count this in the minor win category.

So out of a lovely day where I hung out with my nephew I love so much, I wake into a new day in a new way, realizing a few men I've loved in the past. Some long ago who were never told or others here and today I've never told, either. John, the luthier, I love you. Larry, the actor, I love you, too.

ugh Monday morning

Why ugh when you are retired and one day is pretty much the same as another?   Well, neither of us slept well last night.  I woke up unable to breathe well, all stuffed up.  It’s better now.

Major Dickenson, how was your tour of duty?  I enjoyed bringing my caffeine to you each day.  Yes, I’ll just have to see what makes the most sense when I go to the store, extend your tour or switch.  (And now back to our conversation)

We went to the beach yesterday.  The onshore breeze kept it cool.  This will be a hot week, temperatures reaching out for the 90s.  That’s too early for me, it isn’t even Memorable Day yet.

i think my eyelids are gettin* heavy. Time to let them close up again.

My fever free moment was short lived :(. woke up today with the sweats so check and sure enough, back over 99.  I think it's going to bounce around a bit before I fully recover. I was wiped out this morning but otherwise feeling like I'm turning a corner on this crap. I'm not coughing much, or at least the interval is much longer between coughing fits.

I accepted the offer from Long and Foster this morning so I'm hoping to start paperwork and stuff virtually. I have to isolate until Sunday.  I'm pretty excited about starting this new adventure

So the Ex called me last Wednesday because she wanted to apologize over how our marriage had ended and I had not come out to her but as we talked I decided to tell her. To my surprise she was not surprised but she was very accepting and said that she still wanted to stay close and be friends. Her daughter that had lived with us for the last 5 years before they moved to California, was next after the Ex and I hung up I called her and she was so excited for me and grateful that I called and told her personally. She went on to say that I was an inspiration to her and that she wanted to be a part of my journey and wanting to know what she could do to help. A totally unplanned coming out event and it could not have gone any better. The sad part they are more accepting and wanting to be involved and my own family is not accepting. Oh well I know I have 2 more allies on my side.

Hugs

Riley.

@Bri2020 congratulations on accepting your offer of employment.  In my experience Long and Foster is clearly the best agency in Northern VA.  An agent sold my home in Centreville within 2 days he had 3 competing offers and a bidding war.  I peaked the market.  I definitely think you made an excellent choice and their training from what I’ve heard is excellent.

So I wanted to share a moment I had the other day. I had built my daughters PC. The other day she told me that she wanted to play Elden ring but it seems the CPU is too old to support it. Well I did some research and found what her mother board would support and told her what she could buy to update her PC. She told me that was too much and she would have to wait several months before she could save up that much so I purchased it for her. She wanted to pay me back but I told her that she was there for me during the most difficult days of my life and if it were not for her then I would probably have killed myself. I told her I am only alive today because of her. Therefore I am paying her back. Well tears hugs and thank you ensued. and then the interesting part...

So two days later my wife stopped over my house to pick up some more of her things and mentioned that our daughter told her what I did and said. So she says to me "Jae and I both agree that we like Rachel more."  she then told me she still can not understand the whole trans thing but she knows that I am becoming a better person. She then got in her Jeep and drove away. So. Kind of strange but affirming to me that she can see the positive changes occurring in me. I just want to become the best possible version of me that I can be and I am glad someone noticed.

I am glad your schools are flush with excess spending money, but that is not the situation here in CA.  Back in 1978 an Initiative and Referendum law was passed that limited property taxes severely and basically cut funding from Property Taxes to pennies of the amounts needed to even minimally fund school districts.  Even the U.S. Supreme Court which upheld the law on Federal and Constitutional grounds nevertheless wryly commented in its decision that the state electorate had lost its collective mind in enacting the law.  Our schools are funded through the State's General Fund which receives other tax sources for creating the entire state budget. The General Fund and the legislature try to give  adequate funding  to the primary and secondary school districts as well as college districts and other obligations all from the same limited funds. There are also strict limits on assessing property taxes that actually prevent them from paying for other services directly affecting property ownership which is their proper place, and so even property related services come from our General Fund. Your property tax money seems to be ear-marked for schools which is wonderful and I hope they use it according to your thoughts, but as said we have a different problem out here in CA.  I love my state but do recognize its short comings.  Point of information, the tax law that is creating problems came from the same small area of the state as the proposed referendum on Trans Youth.

The numbers of those negatively affected are significant and discouraging, but the good news is that "over half" of Trans youth live in safe states, and such states do exist.

Seems like a reasonable agreement.  Seattle stays out of Texas, Texas stays out of Seattle.  Weird that the Seattle hospital had a business license in Texas...

Seems to me the time and cost is already being spent....on lawsuits.  And schools are absolutely flush with cash, at least around here.  They get enough property taxes, they need to learn appropriate use of funds.  Buy a few less computers and a few more bathrooms, and spend less time on athletics and I'd bet you a hamburger that the issue would be solved in a year.   To me, it seems like the whole bathroom thing is like lancing a boil or a cyst.  A sharp initial pain, and done. People are just resistant to doing it.      I think I could solve most of it...but politicians get too much press off of this to want it solved.   1.  Universal use of individual, gender-neutral, private bathrooms 2.  Universal use of individual, gender-neutral, private spaces for changing athletic clothes 3.  Emphasize co-ed rather than gendered sports.  Focus on physical activity, good sportsmanship, and having FUN.  Lifelong enjoyment, not just competition. 4.  Ban for-profit athletic programs at highschool and college levels, and ban betting/gambling related to athletic programs at educational institutions. 5.  Affirm parental rights consistently, rather than treating it like a salad bar.  That means permitting gender-affirming healthcare with parental consent, AND prohibiting schools keeping secrets from parents.  Adopt the "paperwork principle."  If it is on paper, parents 100% have a right to know about it and be informed on paper, including names/pronouns if such are documented.  If it is verbal only, it is informal enough to be overlooked or discussed verbally if needed.

It would work better, but the issue will always be time and cost, unless a school district is building a new school.  Districts everywhere are short on infrastructure funds, so it's not a realistic solution in most cases.   Carolyn Marie

I have always thought that the solution to the bathroom question (as well as improved bathroom quality/privacy for everybody) would be individual, gender-neutral, locking bathrooms.  Not this wacky thing we insist on doing with stalls.  It wouldn't take much more space, really.  And it might actually work better.  Ever notice how there's often a line at the door of the women's room, but plenty of free space in the men's?  Yet the men's and women's bathrooms are usually of equal size/capacity?

I'm going to have to stop staying up so late at night...  Its after midnight, so technically morning.  So, Good Morning, y'all.   I got to go to work with my husband for the last two days.  I'm working on the graphics stuff for his company, so he said that nobody would really mind if I hang out.  I usually stay home, but its kind of nice to be somewhere different for a little while.  I spent part of the day at one of the company's installation sites... beautiful weather, so I worked on my laptop sitting under a tree.  And I learned something new - it is amazing how electrical wires are installed underground.  They're put in PVC tubes, and actually pulled through.  By hand!  Apparently a machine would risk breaking the wires somehow, so I watched a line of men literally playing tug-of-war with hundreds of feet of wire.  It was like something out of an old movie - my husband leading a call/response work chant and everybody pulling in a rhythm.    It does give me a bit of self-doubt, though.  Like, if that's what "real men" are doing... maybe I'm a poor-quality imitation
    • Betty K
Can I just say quickly re the bathroom question, how come no-one ever seems to suggest building more gender-neutral toilets?
    • Betty K
With the onslaught of bills targeting trans kids in the US and the current attempt to radically curtail gender-affirming treatment for kids in the UK I think you could just as easily ask why are things so hard for trans kids. Given the volatile political situation around them, I am pleased to hear there are still services attempting to help them.
    • KayC
@Mia Marie I agree that it seems most of the focus is on Trans Youth.  And maybe that is in part because of protecting Trans Youth from the political environment, and to give them a chance to transition at an earlier age.  Many of our generation have been cloistered for most of our lives by societal exceptions and I think that has made it more difficult to be Visible ... until Now. So I guess my answer is ... Be Visible and seek out, or even start, support groups in your local area.  Planned Parenthood does provide Gender Affirming Care and therapy in most U.S. regions (and they take Medicare!).
