Honestly, one thing I'll be glad to leave behind with the academic profession is the role of "judge".

yes, Yes, YES!!!  And the stigma of being judged by department heads and committees who expect you to conform to their preferences and play by their rules of the tenure game (and/or have no intention of treating instructors and newly minted PhDs with fairness).

Also, it took me longer than I expected to rid myself of academic learned behaviors. In particular, it took me three years after leaving academia to be able to relearn the craft of writing with simplicity and clarity: to refrain from gratuitous buzzwords; to stop creating articles with too-long titles that contained colons 😏; and to take the time to craft something that was shorter (and therefore easier to digest and understand).

Pretentiousness is overrated🙂,

Of all of the pronouns out there, I absolutely despise this "sir" crap. They could call me an expletive and I would be happier. Lately I have taken to just looking at them, cocking my head and saying "Really, do I look like a knight from old England with my earrings, makeup, nail polish, and female clothing, really?" Just love that bewildered look on their face. The other thing is if I am given the "sir" treatment, the tip is gone.

Even "Hey you!" is more acceptable! 😁

Good morning, everyone, the coffee is strong,:coffee: because I stayed up way past my normal bedtime to watch the Tau Herculid meteor shower. One real bright streaking meteor lit up early, 15 lessor ones kept me out there looking up for another hour. Several with long duration burns, the rest were quick streaks and gone.

So I hope everyone out there thinking today is Monday remembered to take their Tuesday meds.

Hugs,

Good morning

Today is walk trough day.  Yeah!

if you don’t like Sir and Ma’am, don’t move to the south.  If you don’t like slow check out lines as if you are old friends having a get together, don’t move to the south.  Culture shock!

Kymmie, I guess I went about it the wrong way, I asked, I didn’t just do it.

according to my equivalent to the fence-o-meter it’s 82 going to 95.  It’s still spring but summer is definitely here.

Walk-through today.  Finally, the light at the end of a very long tunnel.  When she signed our letter of intent, it was to be finished October 2021, but we were told realistically expect late November.  It’s June tomorrow, one year after we put up a deposit and still not in it.

I’m told next week maybe for closing.  But we have to go to Virginia at the end of the week, so if they’re aren’t ready by Wednesday it will be mid June. Very aggravating for sure.

Is this a well known reference in the community?

I was not familiar with it - had to look it up, but then again, I'm not engaged in the variety of vocal training tailored to transition. In grad school, one of the vocal performance profs liked to warm us up with "how high the sky". I still use it to warm up my higher range.

Lol, I hear ya! And yes, it most certainly is - turns out the intellect is not where it's at...

Sooo much "ma'am-ing" even in South Florida which is south of the "South of the South" (i.e. North/Central Florida). It grates on me, but what can you do. I have no plans to relocate any time soon.

So, dear friends. I hope you're all well today. I was about to write to say I have a re-evaluation with the physical therapist doctor today. I had written a few months ago (maybe in a different thread) that I had a meltdown last time I worked with her (have been working in the interim with a different PT on her staff) because of her (from my perspective) excessive use of gendered language. The meltdown culminated in her directing me to use "grown up girl posture" last time I worked with her. As I was about to write to y'all to share that I plan to come out to her today for my own sanity, she called me to ask me something. I took the opportunity to tell her I'm enby over the phone. She was totally cool about it. She asked for my pronouns and assured me that she wants me to correct her if she unwittingly says the wrong thing. Then, she said something like, "I'm here for you, girl!" I told her that's an example of something I'd like her not to say, and she was true to her word & thanked me for the correction. She changed my gender to X, and pronouns to they/them in my chart. So! Feeling a lot of relief. Now, I can arrive at my appt ready to work without worrying about addressing this. She is a brilliant PT doc who specializes in EDS (she herself has EDS and rehabbed herself out of a wheelchair). So, I really need to work with her - ppl actually travel from out of state to see her. Lucky for me, she's one town away & super lucky she is an ally.

Super happy for you @Vidanjali! Most of my NB friends say, "any pronouns," but I think it's absolutely important to get it right. I'm glad your PT feels the same way.

Good afternoon Betty_B,

My wife had no idea what a monster she created when she set us up for mani/pedi appointments back in January. I started off with Jell Coats, and they did wonderfully until I started back in the shop building things. On my next visit to the nail salon, I asked about getting stronger coatings? They recommended having them dipped. I'm here to tell you that dipped nail coatings are shop tested, and shop approved. I still have jell coats put on my toes, but my nails are dipped. Regular drugstore cardboard nail files, won't touch these babies. You need to have salon quality files to trim them back and shape them.

@Jackie C.and @Betty_B I promise you, no one is harder on nails than me in the metal shop. These dipped nails 💅🏻 hold up to wrenches, pipe threaders, and grinding wheels.

Good morning

I’ve already had my coffee.  I need to shower and dress.  I have my therapy appointment at 10.

-penis--pit o meter is reading 81 already.  It’s supposed to be mid 90s every day this week.  It’s the beginning of meteorological summertime and it knows it.  It’s also the beginning of the hurricane season.  Let’s hope it avoids the east coast this year.  Maybe avoids land period this year.  Wouldn’t that be nice.  At least they aren’t predicting a record breaking number of storms.

well I guess I’d better get moving.

hope you have a great day today

Good morning from the Ford Service Center, their Coffee is actually very good.

2014 F-250 with 240 thousand miles on the Diesel engine isn’t bad. It’s the components that hang on to the engine that wear out. I hope I’m not jinxing myself, but if I can make it to November 12, 2022. My road trips around the lower 48 will end, and my business relying on the truck will end. From that date on, the only time I’ll need the truck is to pull Ms Suzie’s camper around.

Best wishes, stay positive, and motivated,

@Ticket For Epic, interesting point, and so true. Have you read the writings of Marcus Aurelius? He's probably the most famous of the stoic philosophers.

@Mmindy Thanks for the tip on the nails. I need a stronger coating on mine. Just need to find a place that does it.

30s on the Fenceometer looking at high of 57. It was so nice when we were in Lincoln. As it was in the low 80s the whole weekend.

Feeling pretty good these last few days. Shortly both my wife and youngest will be going to the day shift. So, Kymmie will be able to come out an play a lot more. Summer skirts and dresses here we come.

Indeed I have!  My introduction was Seneca the younger, Moral Letters to Lucilius...changed my life.  Followed by Meditations, which is great for a quick maxim.  Why don't they teach philosophy in school?

Link to comment

@Ticket For Epic, I have no idea why philosophy isn't taught any more. Same goes for History, Grammar and cursive writing. Both my kids graduated high school over 10 years ago and there were some things that struck me as really odd. For example, my youngest daughter came home from an advanced placement American History class that had just finished a module on the Civil War and did not know who Jefferson Davis was. Similarly, my oldest came back from a civics class not knowing the difference between the constitution and the declaration. Neither got anything regarding philosophy, the classics or similar studies. And, it's getting worse, according to my youngest who is now a high school English teacher.

It's a bit scary, actually.

Thanks, darlin! I had another appointment today and apparently this has opened up a deeper line of communication as she has shared that she's recently become interested in educating herself on social justice issues. I love having those conversations & being around people who are committed to personal growth not only for their own sake, but for the benefit of society and culture.

@Ticket For EpicAsked why don't they teach philosophy anymore?

The simplest answer is probably no one wanted to study it. There does seem to be a movement away from the art and science of critical thinking towards the 'correct way to think'. I studied to be a lawyer before I came out as an engineer. As such I was exposed to a fair of philosophy and the rat of reasoning. I have always found that my legal training was by far the important to my career in wireless engineering. Yes one needed to understand the math and science. However, identifying and resolving problems is the essence of a legal education. There is substantial value in the traditional liberal arts education.

I will admit that philosophy was difficult and a struggle to understands there is not the right answer only better or worse answers

Well today was a wonderful day. Finished work 2 hrs early and only minimal bs to deal with lol. Finishing early also means I get to start my four day weekend early!

The best news of all, the first day of Pride month also marks 365 glorious days of being ME! I’ll have to post a comparison picture a little later.

AMUSEMENT The feeling when you encounter something silly, ironic, witty, or absurd, which makes you laugh. You have the urge to be playful and share the joke with others. Similar words: Mirth Amusement is the emotional reaction to humor. This can be something that is intended to be humorous, like when someone tells a good joke or when a friend dresses up in a ridiculous costume. But it can also be something that you find funny that was not intended to be humorous, like when you read a sign with a spelling error that turns it into an ironic pun. For millennia, philosophers and scholars have been attempting to explain what exactly it is that makes something funny. This has led to several different theories. Nowadays, the most widely accepted one is the Incongruity Theory, which states that something is amusing if it violates our standards of how things are supposed to be. For example, Charlie Chaplin-style slapstick is funny because it violates our norms of competence and proper conduct, while Monty Python-style absurdity is funny because it violates reason and logic. However, not every standard or norm violation is necessarily funny. Violations can also evoke confusion, indignation, or shock. An important condition for amusement is that there is a certain psychological distance to the violation. One of the ways to achieve this is captured by the statement ‘comedy is tragedy plus time’. A dreadful mistake today may become a funny story a year from now. But it can also be distant in other ways, for instance, because it happened to someone you do not know, or because it happens in fiction instead of in real life. Amusement also needs a safe and relaxed environment: people who are relaxed and among friends are much more likely to feel amused by something. A violation and sufficient psychological distance are the basic ingredients for amusement, but what any one person find funny will depend on their taste and sense of humor. There are dozens of ‘humor genres’, such as observational comedy, deadpan, toilet humor, and black comedy. Amusement is contagious: in groups, people are more prone to be amused and express their amusement more overtly. People are more likely to share amusement when they are with friends or like-minded people. For these reasons, amusement is often considered a social emotion. It encourages people to engage in social interactions and it promotes social bonding. Many people consider amusement to be good for the body and the soul. By the end of the 20th century, humor and laughter were considered important for mental and physical health, even by psychoneuroimmunology researchers who suggested that emotions influenced immunity. This precipitated the ‘humor and health movement’ among health care providers who believed that humor and laughter help speed recovery, including in patients suffering from cancer1). However, the evidence for health benefits of humor and laughter is less conclusive than commonly believed2. Amusement is a frequent target of regulation: we down-regulate it by shifting our attention to avoid inappropriate laughter, or up-regulate it by focusing on a humorous aspect of a negative situation. Interestingly, amusement that is purposefully up-regulated has been found to have the same beneficial physical and psychological effects as the naturally experienced emotion. Amusement has a few clear expressions that emerge depending on the intensity of the emotion. When people are mildly amused, they tend to smile or chuckle. When amusement intensifies, people laugh out loud and tilt or bob their head. The most extreme bouts of amusement may be accompanied by uncontrollable laughter, tears, and rolling on the floor. Most cultures welcome and endorse amusement. Many people even consider a ‘good sense of humor’ as one of the most desirable characteristics in a partner. At the same time, most cultures have (implicit) rules about what is the right time and place for amusement. For example, displays of amusement may be deemed inappropriate in situations that demand seriousness or solemness, such as at work or during religious rituals.

The experience was the same for me @April Marie. I slept much deeper and I woke up each morning feeling so much more restful sleeping with forms solidly in place. For me, wearing breast forms at night started when before I was a teenager. I had no access up to modern breast forms and certainly no way to buy mastectomy bras back then. I wore a basic bra my mom had put in a donation box and two pairs of soft cotton socks. I have some crazy memories of things I did in my youth to combat my GD but regardless, these makeshift concoctions helped me work through it all.   All My Best, Susan R🌷

Colorado isn't exactly a Republican place, and won't become one anytime soon.  I think those folks might be better off not spending their time playing Don Quixote.    We certainly have our share of California "refugees" moving into where I live, so I wouldn't be surprised to start seeing Coloradans too.  I suspect the trend over the next few years will see the blue areas getting more blue and the red areas getting more red as anybody who can relocate tries to find a place where they fit better.
    • awkward-yet-sweet
Well, at least it'll be a place some folks could choose.  Options are a good thing.

My family would have gobbled that jar up in a minute or two.  When we do have pickled herring, its usually for Christmas.  I didn't grow up with that particular dish, but I grew up in a Greek family so I like just about any kind of fish if I can get it.  However, ocean fish and freshwater fish taste so different.  We usually have more catfish and tilapia to eat than anything else.    What I can't quite get used to is the tons of cabbage my GF insists on eating.  When you live with a Russian, there is always cabbage soup.  Always.  When I first moved in with her, breakfast was "shchi" for soup and either bread or "kasha" which is a bowl of boiled buckwheat with butter and salt.  Those dishes can be made in any number of ways, some are better than others.  In the winter, it can even be salty and sour like kraut.  Not exactly sauerkraut, but packed in tubs with vinegar and salt so it keeps partially for the winter.  But I drew the line when the cabbage soup included pieces of fried snake one day.  😆

Good evening to you as well @Mmindy   That is awesome that you have support from her side. My dad has communicated with me once and that was because he was forced to. His new wife wanted to spend time with my kids. He hated me so much he was in the process of taking my rights away as a parent to my two boys. He was talking to a lawyer and I called him out on it. I don't love him at all. I'll respect him because I wouldn't be here without him but I wished I had another father. My uncles don't talk to me and unfriended me on Facebook. Almost all cousins except for two are still Facebook friends but they don't give me any support. My mom said she won't support me with that but she has said that she loves me. I have nieces and nephews that are still Facebook friends but they have yet to talk to me. I have one sister that supports me out of three. The other's disrespect me by deadnaming me. They have never called me their sister. I think for them they think it's still a phase. They don't ask questions about me being trans. I have to bring it up and on the look of their faces they don't look comfortable about it.
