Androgenous Compliments and Affirmation

Hi there!

My partner is struggling with their gender identity. They've talked to me a lot about wishing they didn't need pronouns at all or that it was possible to take gender out of their identity.

I'm looking for advice on how to compliment their physical appearance without gendered language.

I Ian tell it stings when people say they're "beautiful" or "pretty." But they also struggle with body dismorphia and it seems especially important for them to be reminded that they're attractive.

There are of course gender neutral synonyms like "gorgeous," and obviously saying someone's "sexy" applies regardless of gender. But, to those of you who identify as gender non-conforming, are there compliments that have made you feel particularly seen? Any ideas for affirmation?

Welcome thoughtfully,

I remember thinking the word handsome seems to worker all genders.  But if they were considered male at birth they may feel it to male.

Hugs,

Oh this is a tough one because most compliments are mostly gender focused.  I have heard many used for both but some just never sounded right to me so I get what you are saying.  Like calling a women handsome just did not sound right to me.

Sometimes the non verbal is the way to go.  The eyes can say a thousand things and a slight approving hum in a sexy or positive way can definitely get a point across.

Obviously physical reactions and human contact is another but that's situational and not always appropriate.  But a hug is a hug and OMG I wish I had these more often.

As for complimenting they or them verbally with words it is a hard thing but keeping it to the basic forms of the word is best and most likely consider neutral.

Like don't compliment a blouses or cute top as such, compliment a shirt that looks nice.

Bad example but you get what I am saying.

Good Luck!

More neutral compliments can be things like:

That's a nice color on you.

You look happy/bubbly/cheerful/whatever today.

It's hard to do, but there are ways to find neutral positive things.

I've called people of various genders "cute". I, and I'm sure others, consider it gender neutral. But I've asked transmasc and nb folks if they were ok with my saying so, and assured them I didn't mean it in a girly way. Some might consider it a feminine compliment...

I might suggest saying they are "looking good" or "have a confident look about them."   Look for words that are generalist in nature.

Yeah, I think I've actually heard adult men getting called cute more often than adult women. But my entire life I've absolutely hated being called cute (I'm afab) before I even considered that I might not be 100% cishet, and I know of some other people that hate it as well. So they might just hate it un-gender related. I do very much agree though, I think of "cute" as gender neutral.

My favorite compliments are "You look more like yourself" or "You look confident and sexy" MMMM yes please thank you! I *hate* to be called "cute" but find "looking good" or "you look amazing" annoyingly vague. Get specific? "Your hair looks great today." or "Nice butt" or something like that could help avoid gendered vagaries.

We get so hung up because language when it comes to gender is imprecise IMO.

I've broken it down like this.

Most people are either XY or XX be they gay, straight or bi and then there are folks who are intergendered physically and some of us have intergendered brains.

I like to refer to M2F as XY females and F2M as XX males. That to me seems more precise than other words used to label of describe folks. The thought behind those words means more than the word themselves. Me? I switch from regular guy to sissy with no warning and no known trigger. When I go to "dude" I'm comfortable in my skin and when I switch to sissy i'm less comfortable in my skin.

What happens with a M2F in a marriage? A rhetorical question. If the wife is cool with it is she a lesbian? Is the M2F partner a lesbian?

If a gay male transitions M2F is that person a straight female?

Why not leave sexual orientation out of the equations?

Practically speaking, I would like there to be more heterosexual females be they XY or XX than males. A 40/60 ratio would be nice. I think society would be more civilized with a slightly higher ratio of females vs males.

Growing up I didn't know about trans females and I never entertained the idea of dating one but knowing what I know now, and if I were single, would not think twice about it. Op or non op would be fine with me. What matters if the person inside.

"You look great!" is always a good one for me. Or "You look awesome, that really suits you!" Stuff like that works for me. General statements like "You're super smart!" or "That color looks great on you!" are good, too. It works for me to take out the gendered statements like "You're a very smart young lady." Take out the "young lady" and it's a statement I like. "Dear" is a good endearment, "darling" is a good word, and "love" just sounds sweet to me. All of these are gender neutral (I've seen them used for men, women, and others) and they sound great! Hope this helps!

Wow that is a high number for Estradiol good grief! Testosterone levels are better than mine. I don't remember my Estradiol level but testosterone was 80. To me that is really high but it was in the two hundreds the check in before last one.

I don't understand why this would make a difference being a "dad" I mean, as far as how they would grow.

I don't see why not. I have worn forms since I came out.

I have never worn breastforms, but I assume as long as they don't aggravate your nipples you could.

Every week I've been excited to take my shot, so it's never been an issue. Yesterday, however, I woke up and started my usual "slow roll" and then suddenly realized I had breakfast plans that I had to rush out the door for. After, it was straight into work calls, and then I got the notification from the doctor about things being too high and all the while my mind had completely slipped that I needed take my shot.   Given that I am not asking for medical advice, but sharing my journey, I will note my results: Estradiol at 447 pg/mL and Testosterone was 23 ng/dL, up and down from 26 pg/mL and 526 ng/dL respectively before treatment. Almost flipped the bit! The doc would like my Estradiol closer to 300 pg/mL, so we'll see what Monday's tests state.   Oh, and I teased the dinner with old soccer teammates and never updated the thread! It went well. There were a couple funny moments. One guy, who I was worried about their response, greeted me with "Hey, you've lost some weight!" 😎 And a friend who lives near me picked me up on the way to dinner exclaimed, after we learned one of the invitees might show up with a date, "Wait! We could have brought women?!" To which I instantly responded, "You kind of did, bringing me!" Everyone got a good laugh out of that. 😁

To me there isn't that much difference other the measurement, which side the zipper is on and men's pants have bigger pockets.

I hope this is not stupid question..I have yet to start n not sure if doc will approve..but once you start growing buds n such, can you still wear forms to get to the size you were?   I'm a dad, so when I start blossoms they will be smaller for a long time n probably need surgical augmented..that's fine. I don't want to go ddd to aa to ddd..   any ideas?   thank you

I like them too.  We had them growing up.  But my father's family were Swedes.

Oh my!  I guess it just goes to show how different tastes can be. Since we don't live near the ocean, Seafood is a rare luxury. We absolutely love pickled herring! Especially my husband and my GF, I guess it's a Ferman/Russian cultural thing.  But most of the kids like it too, and a jar wouldn't last in the pantry for long 😆

I think the key to that is just not minding eating the same thing repeatedly. Since we produce a lot of our own food here, we end up eating what is in season at the moment. So, when the yellow squash is ripening, we end up fixing squash 20 different ways. When the strawberries are ready, we eat lots of strawberries. It's kind of a different mindset to eat in season when it has become such a part of American culture but the grocery store has everything we want all the time. Like grapes in December.  My family does even things out a little bit by having a greenhouse so we have some fresh things in the winter, but it's not a 100% fix.

My brothers and I had to eat what was on the plate.  All of it, and nothing else.  Pickiness was not tolerated.  Some of our least favourite were liver and onions, sauerkraut, and especially rollmops (pickled herring).  We finally protested enough to persuade our mother not to serve rollmops, though she kept a jar in the pantry for years afterwards, as a threat if we didn't behave.

I'll go first.  My favorite team is the Yankees.  Loved them since I was a kid.  I was born in NYC so, yeah.  I know everyone loves to hate them, and that's OK.  I just love baseball in general.  It's a game of traditions, strategy, power, grace and skill.   Play Ball!!  ⚾   Carolyn Marie

I guess you do have a good point. It's just hard to try and not have the same meals over and over again.

Hi   I’ll weigh in on being picky about food.  Yes, and I was brought up that way.  We didn’t have to eat everything our parents ate.  They had a number of things they ate that they figured we wouldn’t eat, an acquired taste things or one or the other didn’t like them too.   even as an adult there are many things I won’t eat.  In my defense, there are different things my wife won’t eat.   the weird thing is that after being in E, my tastes have changed.  Sweet, sour, salty or bland, if I eat or drink too much of any one thing and I have to counter act it.   Willow
