Grace,

I was thinking of the meaning of love & it seems in English we need context or an adjective to describe what type. The Greeks gave each form its own word. I thought it was helpful.

I have found it so.  I don't know quite why my mother felt those Greek terms were an important lesson.  For me, the important thing is to know that there are different types of love.  A little like the Myers Briggs personality inventory.  I have found the 16 personality types to be completely useless when trying to anticipate problems, but pretty useful in understanding problems after they have occurred.  But more importantly, to realize that there are many kinds of people, not just one or two types, was an important lesson.  BTW, my mother used to have her writing students take the inventory, then gave group writing exercises by mixing up the personality types in some devilish way.

P.S. understanding different types of love was extremely important in processing my trans nature.  It was very hard to unwind philia and eros in my relationship with (other) women.  In a male role in our society, we are not allowed to have feelings for women which are not eros, and eros is limited to one partner.  Completely suffocating for me until I understood that that empathy and need for connection was essentially female.
