Not Skinny Jeans Suggestions?

The past few times I've tried to shop for jeans in stores it seems like all there is for women these days are skinny jeans! I've put up with them for the past few years hoping the style would change, but it's still going strong and I hate it. I really loved the old straight leg jeans that were popular in the late 90's. The current straight leg jeans I've found are still really fitted and not true straight leg. I used to be able to fit into boys sizes which were the perfect length, but I've gained too much weight to do that anymore. Men's jeans are just too long since I'm very short (5ft 2in or about 158cm) and they just don't fit right at all no matter what style I pick (I don't mind cuffing them at the bottom). I just want some simple jeans that are straight all the way down.

Any suggestions as to brands or places I can shop? I'd prefer a brick & mortar since I can try things on, but I'm really thinking of giving online stores a try. Between the pandemic and the narrow selection at the remaining big retailers, I just don't think going into a real store is worth it right now.

I've had good luck with both breadth of selection and the freedom to try anything on at both Kohl's and JC Penney.

@Kiara

When I first came out to my wife and started transitioning I was limited to what my wife had for the first month until I decided to go out and do some serious wardrobe shopping. My wife loves the regular straight leg ladies jeans. Luckily, I had lost enough weight to get into her jeans and they fit so much better than my men’s jeans....looked better imho too...but I digress.?

I wore her Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda style straight leg jeans for a while until I dropped under size 16. They were a very nice fit while it lasted but I later I found I preferred skinned jeans and I went that direction. They come in petite sizes too which might work better for you given your height.

Obviously I don't know what is available in stores over there but I find it very useful to look online to see what is generally availble then zero in on particular stores. Here many stores have a 'deliver to shop' option so I presume you could try them on and return them on the spot if not Ok but I have never investigated.

Personally, I love skinny jeans. They make my legs look amazing and I have several pair. Now, that said I've had pretty good luck at Kohls lately finding not-skinny jeans that fit me. There's lots of stuff there for small people too (sorry, I'm a 5'11" amazon. You're small). My small friend (she's 5'3") suggests Target. I've found straight leg styles without the super-heavy denim fabric that you see in men's jeans there too.

Hugs!

Kiara, if you have a Tractor Supply Co., Fleet & Farm, or Western Wear store in your area, they have womenswear perfect Cowgirl?Jeans in straight leg or boot cut.

Gina, Have you tried skinny jeans? I’m talking about a pair that really fit well on the length? Not clam diggers..lol.  I realize you’re tall and the options are more limited. I’ll just mention this....we had a stylish trans woman who frequented our trans support group on occasion and she pulled off a very good look wearing well fitting skinned jeans. She was at least 6’ 8” or taller and a good weight for her stature. I’m 5’ 10” and she looked a foot taller than me when standing next to her. She would wear absolutely beautiful tunic tops instead of the shorter regular tops and it made her legs look much shorter and brought the focus off her long legs. I wouldn’t write skinny jeans off yet. Sometimes it’s what you wear with an outfit that can make the whole thing come together.

My Best,

I agree that you have to balance the jeans with a complementary top.  Long and loose work best.   It can be done!   I am down to 6' but very lean and thats what I do to be able to wear differing styles.  I can look like a stick sometimes so its a challenge.

I have found the best buys for me on Amazon with the best selection. Once in a blue moon I might find a pair at Walmart. Tractor Supply doesn't carry them long enough for me. This is the bane of being a 6'8" woman.

I feel you. I'm only 5'11" and I have trouble finding pairs with a long enough leg. I'm lucky to be able to wear a 16T off the rack, but you'd probably need a specialty store. Long-Tall Sally might have what you need. Best of luck! You deserve clothes that fit.

Old Navy has a Tall inseam size on their skinny jeans once in awhile. I just checked their website. They do still carry Tall 34” inseams but I looked at a couple and they had only Long 32” inseam in stock at size 16 and 18 but not Tall. I’m wearing a pair of Old Navy skinny jeans right now and they are my favorite jean.

Here is a screenshot of their sizing scheme.

I've been shopping at Kohl's and the one pair of "straight leg" jeans I have from them are basically loose skinny jeans. They're still very form fitting. It's from one of their private label brands so maybe I'll have better luck with some non-Kohl's brand jeans. There isn't a Penneys near me anymore, but I did love shopping there when I was younger.

They just put in a Tractor Supply by me a few years ago, but I've never been in there! Part of the reason is that I worked for a big box home improvement store right across the highway and they were viewed as competition. It was more laziness on my part than being loyal to my company (also an ex-manager we all hated got hired there). I'll definitely have to check them out.

I totally feel you from the opposite end of the spectrum. I have the opposite problem and all my jeans are either skinny fit or I look like I'm rocking the 90's JNCO look. It seems like jeans (and other clothes) are made only for people of a certain height... You have to fit into this narrow window of height/weight if you want any choice in what you can wear and still look good. The rest of us just have to either live with clothes that don't fit or pray we can find the rare items that fit and hopefully are our style too.

I know I luck out at being at the short end as I could just get my clothes cut down if I wanted, but all my tall friends can't add fabric make things long enough. Clothing manufacturers are so cheap now. They constantly use as little fabric as they can get away with meaning you don't have that extra fabric built into clothes anymore to let out hems and whatnot.

I hope you can find some skinny jeans in your size. I know the struggle is real.

Since we seem to be flattening the curve vertically and there's a high chance of everything shutting down again, all my non-essential shopping is back on hold. My work has been complaining about the budget and they just just came up with a shiny new furlough plan after what happened last spring. It things keep going this way then I may be going without a paycheck for a while. I'll just go back to window shopping for now and hoping that one day I'll find some non-skinny jeans that fit right eventually.

Old Navy and Gloria Vanderbilt and probably what you would like.

They are straight leg and some are Mom jeans basically.

Ladies sizes vary because you have Jr, misses and womens size choices to choose from.

Womens and ladies sizes are wider in the hip and upper thigh.

I love high waisted jeans with a boot cut the best because I am quite large but I do on occasion wear skinny jeans because I love them too.

I look like a stuffed sausage  in skinny jeans but I still love them.

How we look in photographs isn't really anything we can control.  I've actually searched for answers and there are lots of good explanations out there like this one:   https://www.foxbackdrop.com/blogs/news/beautiful-photogenic-reasons-tricks-foxbackdrop#:~:text=Based on the light-creation,angular faces are usually photogenic.   The simplest explanation is a picture captures our image two-dimensionally when in real-life, we are seen three-dimensionally.  A person can be beautiful or handsome in real life but the two-dimensional image can be way different.  So, for those of us that don't think we look good in a picture, fear not.  We are much better looking in three-dimensions.

Good morning    I should not have said about sleeping in, now I have to go in 2 ½ hours earlier.  Oh well at least I. Off tomorrow and Monday, I think.as of now, hope I didn’t just jinx that too.     Hot today high 80s dropping quickly and rain to the 60s for a couple of days then more normal 70s.  It just depends on which way the wind blows. Off the gulf, hotter, off the ocean, cooler, out of the north rain and when they all converge, look out.  That’s today.   i made a pot of coffee but I think most of it is going to waste.  My wife went back to bed and I’m not good with coffee when I’m hot, and I am. That’s my fault, I was 4 days.late with my E again.  I just st have a really hard time keeping on a 10 day schedule.  And my reminders aren’t helping..   now I’m going to peak by tomorrow since it isn’t all absorbed in one day, I’ll hold fairly steady but if I’m late again I’ll drop well below my target yet again.     Im down in the valley, the valley so low But I see my true love, at the top of the hill i climb the mountain, but she is not there for she has gone back down, to the valley below   I didn’t come up with a refrain and with that I’m calling the guys with the padded cells. lol   Willow

Congratulations and Happy Anniversary!!!! A beautiful milestone.    I hope to see you tonight...I just have to stay awake long enough!!

It's funny with photos isn't it, how we think we look in them vs. how we actually do look in them! I'm hopeless at smiling and I have to try really hard not to frown or look like a zombie. I'm never sure how I come across to others.   I had a moment late last night when my eldest daughter facetimed my wife for some now forgotten reason, and when I was handed the tablet and talking to her, I was fixated on my image in the corner. My hair was wild at the time, I was a bit tipsy and all I saw was a woman! I have no idea what she saw in that context. I'll probably never know.

I hope to see you on the Zoom meeting tonight, April.  I might be late, since I am doing lights and sound for a play that opened last night.  I was home before ten last night, so I think I'll be able to make it.   Today is an anniversary for me.  Seven years ago today, I stood up at the weekly community kaffeeklatsch as <deadname> and announced that henceforth I would be Kathy.  It went as well as I could have imagined: there were some surprised looks, but no hostility and lots of support.  A whole layer of stress disappeared that day and has never come back.  (There have been other stresses, but that one is gone.)  I have been me full-time ever since that moment.

This is a scarily accurate description of what I feel!   I hope I don't sound too schmaltzy by saying this, but I remember when I signed up to this forum last year, during the sign-up process the question is asked, "Why do you want to join TransPulse?" to which I wrote, "Looking for a home where I can freely write about my issues and interact with similar people."    I think I just found one. ❤️
