Trying to figure myself out

Hi, I'm Taylor, and in the middle of last year (2020) I started questioning my gender. I'm still like this almost or even a year later from then and I'm stuck between if I'm Trans or Nonbinary. I know I'm pretty young and have time to figure this out but I was hoping for some input and see what someone else thought since I can't talk to many people about it and it's been making me fail classes. I currently identify as nonbinary due to the fact I'm not always comfortable having male parts and sometimes I am but I currently identify as Bi-Gender (I put questioning in my profile for this reason) because I always feel male it's not really back and forth more of something that's always there. But sometimes I can't think of me having some of those parts. However, I do sometimes I think I'm afraid to say I'm Trans.. due to what my family thinks of anything involving non-cis gendered and or people who aren't straight but I assure y 'all I'm not internally transphobic. As I said, I'm just really afraid of my family for the reasons mentioned. My mom is iffy about the topic but that's another story to tell. Maybe if they were more accepting towards it I'd be Trans? I'm not sure.. but I was hoping someone could not diagnose me (of-course) but tell me what they think about this. I realize I posted a post similar to this in a different forum, but I'm hoping for more inputs since last time I got 2. I just kinda wanted to see what more people thought and if anyone else has or had this experience of any age. I'm just looking for some comfort and less stress of going back and forth. I'd love to hear personal stories and if possible become friends with you guys! :) Thanks, hope you have a great day and if you don't answer this it's fine but at least thanks for reading..!

I also forgot to mention I can't get gender therapy due to the costs and because my parents divorced and my father won't pay child care and took ALL therapy off his insurance so people at work wouldn't think he's crazy. Also cuz he's cheap as heck I'm on my dad's insurance because my mom's isn't as good she's been paying for everything for me for the past year and longer cuz my dad doesn't pay and it's too expensive. Her insurance also doesn't cover it or if it does it's so little it might as well not be covered. So yeah. I came here for that reason thinking talking to people who can maybe relate would help me and make me feel less in the dumps about everything and could help me be less of a negative person.

Thanks! :)

Hi Taylor,

It seems like a lot of your questioning revolves around how other people will react. Be honest with yourself. If you shut them all out of your mind for a moment what do you think? Granted, being able to do something about it is a different story but self acceptance is the first step and can relieve a lot of stress.

Obviously I’m trans but maybe if I would have accepted it 30 years ago my life would have turned out different. At least I wouldn’t be wishing I had done something sooner.

Thanks! I'll try to listen to myself more and see if being trans is what feels right. I feel that identifying currently as nonbinary may be an attempt to playing it safe due to my anxiety. Hearing your story makes me feel I shouldn't doubt myself so I'll be more accepting towards the idea. That inspired me to be more exploring! :) Thanks so much for your opinion.

I agree with Liz. Who you are is on the inside, not what someone else says you are.

At your age I had similar thoughts and thought something was wrong with me. There was no Internet or anyone to talk to. Many of the terms used today had not been though of yet. We can't diagnose you, but I am AMAB, non binary, and trans. You are not alone.

Hugs,

Mike

When I was younger I thought I just might be gay or bi and really fem. As I learned and experienced more it turned out to be a lot more than that. I would have transitioned in my teens had I known what I know now and felt safe to do so. A lot of fear and shame kept me from moving forward with it. I just wanted to always be the girl.

I just read the new replies, and I'm really grateful to know I'm not alone in feeling confused with gender identity. It seems like the majority have this occurrence in their teens which makes sense since it's a time of self discovery and evolution. It's also very wonderful to know I have support through this confusing time, and I'm very delighted to hear all you're experiences. It's comforting to know other people have felt like this and that I shouldn't feel alone since we've all been through this basically. Thank you all for being so supportive, kind to me, and understanding. I hope you all have a great day! :)

Also, if you haven't already, you can check out https://pflag.org/ to find a chapter near you, or at least call someone to talk to for support. I have found the Trevor hotline useful as well whenever I was feeling dysphoric.

I grew up with it, my mother's side were Germans.  I still like cabbage.  I make a sweet/sour dish with vinegar and brown sugar, add some bacon if you have it.  And in warmer weather, slaw.  I like that better if it's a few days old, and has worked off a little.

Pity that we can't just respect each other and get along.

Good Friday Morning    I will be spending a good portion of my day at church today.  I don’t know how any of my family would have been with me.  They all passed before I figured myself out.  I often think my mother and sister may have figured it out before I did but maybe it was just my depression that they saw.  I don’t know and never will.  My grandfather Young unconditionally loved me but he passed when I was 9.   Same with my wife’s parents, both gone before.  We’ve never had the greatest relationship with my wife’s brother but we do see them occasionally.  They words and actions aren’t always in sink when it comes to me.   Sour kraut or boil cabbage were never big even with my parents so that was something we were never expected to eat.  Nor was anything with mustard.  My mother hated mustard and it turns my stomach. My wife tried to sneak it into things early in our marriage but I could always tell.  She stopped after a while.   well I wave to go get ready to go to church.  I have a committee meeting at 10 and then we have a Good Friday Service at noon.   Willow

Good morning everyone,   @KymmieLI hope you're misreading your bosses communications. As you say keep plugging a long. Don't give them signs that you're slow quitting, just to collect unemployment.   I have a few things to do business wise, and will be driving to the St. Louis, MO area for two family gatherings.   Have a great day,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Good morning everyone, TGIFF   It seems like I am the one keeping or shop from being the best. According to the boss. I don't know if my days are numbered or not. But anymore I am waiting for the axe to fall. Time will tell.   I keep plugging a long.   Kymmie

In the warmer weather, Mine is hitting the road on the bike. Just me, the bike, and the road. Other is it music or working on one of my many projects.   Kymmie

AMUSEMENT The feeling when you encounter something silly, ironic, witty, or absurd, which makes you laugh. You have the urge to be playful and share the joke with others. Similar words: Mirth Amusement is the emotional reaction to humor. This can be something that is intended to be humorous, like when someone tells a good joke or when a friend dresses up in a ridiculous costume. But it can also be something that you find funny that was not intended to be humorous, like when you read a sign with a spelling error that turns it into an ironic pun. For millennia, philosophers and scholars have been attempting to explain what exactly it is that makes something funny. This has led to several different theories. Nowadays, the most widely accepted one is the Incongruity Theory, which states that something is amusing if it violates our standards of how things are supposed to be. For example, Charlie Chaplin-style slapstick is funny because it violates our norms of competence and proper conduct, while Monty Python-style absurdity is funny because it violates reason and logic. However, not every standard or norm violation is necessarily funny. Violations can also evoke confusion, indignation, or shock. An important condition for amusement is that there is a certain psychological distance to the violation. One of the ways to achieve this is captured by the statement ‘comedy is tragedy plus time’. A dreadful mistake today may become a funny story a year from now. But it can also be distant in other ways, for instance, because it happened to someone you do not know, or because it happens in fiction instead of in real life. Amusement also needs a safe and relaxed environment: people who are relaxed and among friends are much more likely to feel amused by something. A violation and sufficient psychological distance are the basic ingredients for amusement, but what any one person find funny will depend on their taste and sense of humor. There are dozens of ‘humor genres’, such as observational comedy, deadpan, toilet humor, and black comedy. Amusement is contagious: in groups, people are more prone to be amused and express their amusement more overtly. People are more likely to share amusement when they are with friends or like-minded people. For these reasons, amusement is often considered a social emotion. It encourages people to engage in social interactions and it promotes social bonding. Many people consider amusement to be good for the body and the soul. By the end of the 20th century, humor and laughter were considered important for mental and physical health, even by psychoneuroimmunology researchers who suggested that emotions influenced immunity. This precipitated the ‘humor and health movement’ among health care providers who believed that humor and laughter help speed recovery, including in patients suffering from cancer1). However, the evidence for health benefits of humor and laughter is less conclusive than commonly believed2. Amusement is a frequent target of regulation: we down-regulate it by shifting our attention to avoid inappropriate laughter, or up-regulate it by focusing on a humorous aspect of a negative situation. Interestingly, amusement that is purposefully up-regulated has been found to have the same beneficial physical and psychological effects as the naturally experienced emotion. Amusement has a few clear expressions that emerge depending on the intensity of the emotion. When people are mildly amused, they tend to smile or chuckle. When amusement intensifies, people laugh out loud and tilt or bob their head. The most extreme bouts of amusement may be accompanied by uncontrollable laughter, tears, and rolling on the floor. Most cultures welcome and endorse amusement. Many people even consider a ‘good sense of humor’ as one of the most desirable characteristics in a partner. At the same time, most cultures have (implicit) rules about what is the right time and place for amusement. For example, displays of amusement may be deemed inappropriate in situations that demand seriousness or solemness, such as at work or during religious rituals.
