What's the earliest that I can start T, and how can I convince my parents that it's safe?

I’ve asked my parents about starting T or hormone blockers, and it’s always been a very strong no. They believe that it’ll cause more problems than it solves. I really want to start T, and I don’t want to have to wait until I move out, but I might have to. I’ve done lots of research on it, but they’re still convinced that the risk outweighs the reward, and they’re lacking a lot of knowledge on trans stuff in general. How do I make them see that I really want this, and that it’s not as bad as they think? I doubt I’ll be able to make them see how much this means to me and how much this would help me, but any advice helps.

With some of the other shenanigans going on right now, I am afraid that your parents, no matter how much they see you want the T are going to be pushing back and holding off on their permission. They will say NO simply because they can for no really good reason. The majority of clinical evidence is that HRT is safe if you are over a certain developmental stage, generally 16+ if your doctor sees no other problems, including family histories of blood clots and other organ problems.  There are however "scientific experts" using junk science to feed beliefs such as your parents and are feeding those same things to 20 U.S. states to get them to outlaw any hormones or puberty blockers to people under 21 years.  The immediate future looks bleak but I suspect things will change in time.  Your parents want to believe the negative, and so my best for you is to keep up one day at a time and time will be on your side.  Please get a therapist or Adolescent Medicine team to help you hold on, and when you can move out and are of legal age, you will have had time to prepare for what you want.

what a sad situation to be in. have you been a male since very young? if so have you been talking to your parents about it for a long time? my situation was totally different. i knew from a very young age that i am female and my parents always accepted that i am. it may have helped that my parents are both professionals, my dad a physician and my mom an attorney but that's just my take on it. i suppose even they might not have understood. i am fortunate. i wish i had some good advice for you. just stay true to yourself. thank you. :)

The question is, scientifically, do you need Hormone Replacement Therapy at your current age? What are your current stoichiometric levels? How is your liver functioning?  Can you safely live on an HRT regimen? Only a medical profesional can answer that.

Its my perception that there is a pervasive belief out there on the internet that you're not "officially trans" unless you are on an HRT regimen. Whether that perception is right, I don't really know.  I do worry though that so many people associate "being trans" with being on an HRT regimen. It's almost a gateway if you will.   Like Hey Girl, You on E?.  No. Talk to the hand.

I also believe that HRT therapy does nothing more than change the fat distribution priority / messaging in your body. It's only one tool in a whole set of tools available to address gender dysphoria. There are studies out there that oestrogen has no psychological effects.  However, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence out there that it does. So research is your tool of choice on solving that riddle.

I guess what I am saying is that there is speculation about HRT and there is science. Both are legitimate factors when considering the need for HRT and whether to choose HRT as a focus point for your happiness.

I have read some of it, mostly in areas specifically targeted at the LGBTQ+ peoples.   You also have to take into account what and who is behind the words, not just the words themselves. Together that creates context, right? Let's take some examples, under the Department of Health & Human Services section:   "Radical actors inside and outside government are promoting harmful identity politics that replaces biological sex with subjective notions of “gender identity” and bases a person’s worth on his or her race, sex, or other identities. This destructive dogma, under the guise of “equity,” threatens American’s fundamental liberties as well as the health and well-being of children and adults alike."   or   "Families comprised of a married mother, father, and their children are the foundation of a well-ordered nation and healthy society. Unfortunately, family policies and programs under President Biden’s HHS are fraught with agenda items focusing on “LGBTQ+ equity,” subsidizing single-motherhood, disincentivizing work, and penalizing marriage. These policies should be repealed and replaced by policies that support the formation of stable, married, nuclear families."   From a wording perspective, who doesn't want to protect the health and well-being of Americans or think that families aren't good for America? But let's take a look at the author, Roger Severino. He's well-quoted to be against LGBTQ+ anything, has standard christian nationalist views, supports conversion therapy, etc.   So when he uses words like "threatens the health and well-being of children and adults alike" it's not about actual health, it's about enforcing cis-gendered ideology because he (and the rest of the Heritage Foundation) believe LGBTQ+ people and communities are harmful. Or when he invokes the family through the lens of, let's just say dog whistles including the "penalization of marriage" (how and where?!), he idealizes families involving marriage of a "biological male to a biological female" and associates LGBTQ+ family equity as something unhealthy.   Who are the radical actors? Who is telling people to be trans, gay, or queer in general? No one. The idea that there can be any sort of equity between LGBTQ+ people and "normal" cis people is abhorrent to the author, so the loaded language of radical/destructive/guise/threaten are used. Families that he believes are "good" are stable/well-ordered/healthy, specifically married/nuclear ones.   Start looking into intersectionality of oppression of non-privileged groups and how that affects the concept of the family and you will understand that these platitudes are thinly veiled wrappers for christian nationalist ideology.   What's wrong with equity for queer families, to allow them full rights as parents, who are bringing up smart and able children? Or single mothers who are working three jobs to get food on plates?

Well yesterday didn't work like I wanted to. I met a guy and started talking and he was wanting to be in a relationship. I asked my kids on how they thought of me dating a man and they said gross and said no. I guess it's time to look for women. I think that is going to be harder. Oh well I guess.

This topic reminds me of the lyrics to the Beatles song, "A Little Help From My Friends."   "What do you see when you turn out the lights?"   "I can't tell you but I know it's mine."   Carolyn Marie

@Ivy have you read the actual document?   Has anyone else out there read it?
    • Abigail Genevieve
I am reading the Project 2025 document https://www.project2025.org/policy/   This will take some time.  I read the forward and I want to read it again later.   I read some criticism of it outside here and I will be looking for it in the light of what has been posted here and there.  Some of the criticism is bosh.   @MaeBe have you read the actual document?

Old topic, but I gotta say my favorites are: "Stop hitting on minors" (doesn't work if you're holder tho) and "Sure as [squid] not you"

Abigail, I think we will just leave the other posts where they are, and the discussion can start anew here.  It is possible to do what you ask, but would disrupt the flow of the discussion in the other thread, and would require more work than it's worth.   Carolyn Marie
