Don't Look Up is a new Netflix movie, just released on the 24th. It is a dark-comedic satire of the world's response to climate change.

Some astronomers discover a comet that is heading for Earth. Orbital calculations confirm an impact in six months. The scientists go to the White House to try to convince the authorities to do something to prevent the impact. I won't give away any more details, but it is a dark comedy, in a Strangelovian way. Along the way, it pokes fun at talk show hosts, politicians and their advisors.

It stars some big-name actors: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett

Well worth a couple of hours of screen time.

Well worth a couple of hours of screen time.

I enjoyed it too and will probably watch it again with my wife.

Interesting.  I'll look for it as I loved Dr. Strangelove.  

 

On another related subject, I was surprised to hear the James Webb telescope was launched.  Last I heard it was being delayed to high winds at the launch site.  I hope it deploys as planned.  I know a ton of effort has gone into it.

A news article I read about it says it will be almost July 2022 before it is fully deployed since it has to go into an orbit that will keep it in Earth's shadow from the Sun so it can get the good stuff.

It will get to the right orbit long before it is ready to go to work.  Basically, in a month, it's there.

 

They have to check out the mirror and all the various bits and pieces that have to deploy in order for it to work.  No one has ever made a telescope with so many moving parts that could not ever be serviced.  So they are going to spend three months checking out the various pieces and making sure the telescope can focus.

 

Then, the science instruments all have to be checked out.  That takes another three months.

I resemble that remark.  If you look at the stats, I think about 50% of us are in IT, so, yeah.

In Torrey Peters best selling and critically praised novel Detransition, Baby, she describes the three career choices of trans-women to be (and I paraphrase): sex worker, drug dealer and IT 🤣. Seriously, an incredible book with a unique view of the trans experience.
