Concealing 5 o'clock shadow... advice?

This Wreckage

Recommended Posts

As I've had no facial hair removal yet, my cheeks show a bluish tinge no matter how closely I shave. Someone recommended from personal experience using a colour corrector, in their case Mehron CreamBlend sticks which are a theatrical makeup product. How do others choose a shade for foundation and treatments like this one? I don't want to visit a local beauty counter under false pretences, and there are a lot of different shades which look suitable. Also any general advice on concealing that shadow would be gratefully received.

Brick red lip stick under your foundation does an adequate job. A foundation labeled as a tattoo concealer will also work very well.

Having indian herritage in me I get a 5'oclock shadow about 5 seconds after the closest shave its possible to get, which is extremely annoying.   Basically as Vicky above has noted, you need to nutrliase the blue with another colour on the reverse of the spectrum which is why reds/oranges are always pulled out as a suitable colour corrector.  Lipsticks and lip liners are the easiest methods but you need a light one, and it can be enough to just put it on your finger and smear it over sometimes depending on the brand.

You can also use stuff like dermablend and see if it works for you (I think they sell it in Boots now).

Dermablend

This is the brand name of one of the Tattoo concealers I recommended above.  It is available in many skin tones.

There are no false pretences involved.  I asked a trans friend to accompany me to the cosmetic counter of my local drugstore.  Someone with experience with cosmetics will be able to help you match your skin colour.  My friend was just there for moral support.  The sales associate was invaluable for doing the colour matching.  She was very pleasant and helpful and had no problem at all helping a trans customer.  Most will be like that.  They know that a first-time buyer will be getting more than $100 of cosmetics, and they don't want to lose the sale.  So it is in their interest to be nice.

These days, after quite a lot of electrolysis, a regular foundation works well, with a little bit of blush over it.  Back when I had more facial hair, I'd use a theatrical concealer.  Basically the same stuff but with more pigment so it is opaque.

I agree fully with that.  I overlooked that part of the earlier post.

I found that visiting a dedicated beauty chain (in my case sephora, not sure what stores you have in UK) on a weekday morning when there were few people around was a very pleasant and helpful experience. The staff were all very friendly. I was dressed as a man and it was understood that i was buying makeup for myself, and nobody batted an eyelid. The woman who helped me did a color match and suggested products. This was a dedicated store and not in an open plan department store setup like Macys, so that made it a lot more comfortable. I didn't buy color corrector but I think they would probably be able to suggest one. Hope this helps.

FWIW when I have to wear concealer under foundation on a few days post-laser, silicone primer smoothes things so everything doesn't look caked on as much too. I was suprised how effective it was, you only need a small bit.

I use Nars Radiant Creamy Colour Corrector in a peachy orange tone, but I have also used cheaper brands and brighter oranges and thought they worked fine.

As to buying make-up dressed like a man, I used to buy it at the supermarket and use the self-serve aisle to scan it, but I have also walked brazenly into an upmarket make-up shop in broad daylight and... no-one batted an eyelid. We care way more about these little perceived transgressions than most anyone else does. You'll be fine.

I'm doing electrolysis on a battery operated home kit, and it's thinning my beard out nicely.

What I have left is gray, so I really don't need anything more than a close shave and foundation. Most days it's powder, some bronze and white highlights, mascara, and a bit of lippy.

I do roll right into JC Penny cosmetics dept and work with the SA. I'm always addressed as ma'am.

I'm using a 'Verseo Smooth' electrolysis device, but I use it only once a week because I have sensitive skin (recommended 3 times per week).

I started on my face only and avoided under the chin to do a comparison.

I can run the back of my finger up my face and feel where I have and haven't treated, so it's slowing working.

If you look at a color wheel, orange is directly opposite blue.  To neutralize one color you are supposed to use the color directly opposite on the color wheel, so orange tends to be the best choice for blue beard shadow.

My regimen for applying foundation is to apply just enough orange concealer to make the blue disappear.  How much you apply depends on how dark your shadow tends to be.  Once the concealer sets, then it is important to apply the correct shade of foundation, one that matches your natural skin tone.  Foundation needs to be the full coverage type to hide the orange underneath and it you may  need to build the coverage slowly until the orange tone is covered.  Even when using full coverage foundation, I have found the results come when you slowly build the coverage in very light layers.  This prevents the foundation from looking caked on or unnatural.

After reading this thread previously - and concerned about my mustache shadow - I tried a reddish-orange lipstick (lightly applied) and that worked pretty good.
But the best thing I found was an orange colored Burt's Bees lip balm.  It's light enough but color matches the orange-ish tinge on @Sally Stone's chart.

I put a Maybelline flesh-toned eraser/concealer on top of that, and then my normal foundation.  It lasts most of the day.

I grew up with it, my mother's side were Germans.  I still like cabbage.  I make a sweet/sour dish with vinegar and brown sugar, add some bacon if you have it.  And in warmer weather, slaw.  I like that better if it's a few days old, and has worked off a little.

Good Friday Morning    I will be spending a good portion of my day at church today.  I don’t know how any of my family would have been with me.  They all passed before I figured myself out.  I often think my mother and sister may have figured it out before I did but maybe it was just my depression that they saw.  I don’t know and never will.  My grandfather Young unconditionally loved me but he passed when I was 9.   Same with my wife’s parents, both gone before.  We’ve never had the greatest relationship with my wife’s brother but we do see them occasionally.  They words and actions aren’t always in sink when it comes to me.   Sour kraut or boil cabbage were never big even with my parents so that was something we were never expected to eat.  Nor was anything with mustard.  My mother hated mustard and it turns my stomach. My wife tried to sneak it into things early in our marriage but I could always tell.  She stopped after a while.   well I wave to go get ready to go to church.  I have a committee meeting at 10 and then we have a Good Friday Service at noon.   Willow

Good morning everyone,   @KymmieLI hope you're misreading your bosses communications. As you say keep plugging a long. Don't give them signs that you're slow quitting, just to collect unemployment.   I have a few things to do business wise, and will be driving to the St. Louis, MO area for two family gatherings.   Have a great day,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Good morning everyone, TGIFF   It seems like I am the one keeping or shop from being the best. According to the boss. I don't know if my days are numbered or not. But anymore I am waiting for the axe to fall. Time will tell.   I keep plugging a long.   Kymmie

AMUSEMENT The feeling when you encounter something silly, ironic, witty, or absurd, which makes you laugh. You have the urge to be playful and share the joke with others. Similar words: Mirth Amusement is the emotional reaction to humor. This can be something that is intended to be humorous, like when someone tells a good joke or when a friend dresses up in a ridiculous costume. But it can also be something that you find funny that was not intended to be humorous, like when you read a sign with a spelling error that turns it into an ironic pun. For millennia, philosophers and scholars have been attempting to explain what exactly it is that makes something funny. This has led to several different theories. Nowadays, the most widely accepted one is the Incongruity Theory, which states that something is amusing if it violates our standards of how things are supposed to be. For example, Charlie Chaplin-style slapstick is funny because it violates our norms of competence and proper conduct, while Monty Python-style absurdity is funny because it violates reason and logic. However, not every standard or norm violation is necessarily funny. Violations can also evoke confusion, indignation, or shock. An important condition for amusement is that there is a certain psychological distance to the violation. One of the ways to achieve this is captured by the statement ‘comedy is tragedy plus time’. A dreadful mistake today may become a funny story a year from now. But it can also be distant in other ways, for instance, because it happened to someone you do not know, or because it happens in fiction instead of in real life. Amusement also needs a safe and relaxed environment: people who are relaxed and among friends are much more likely to feel amused by something. A violation and sufficient psychological distance are the basic ingredients for amusement, but what any one person find funny will depend on their taste and sense of humor. There are dozens of ‘humor genres’, such as observational comedy, deadpan, toilet humor, and black comedy. Amusement is contagious: in groups, people are more prone to be amused and express their amusement more overtly. People are more likely to share amusement when they are with friends or like-minded people. For these reasons, amusement is often considered a social emotion. It encourages people to engage in social interactions and it promotes social bonding. Many people consider amusement to be good for the body and the soul. By the end of the 20th century, humor and laughter were considered important for mental and physical health, even by psychoneuroimmunology researchers who suggested that emotions influenced immunity. This precipitated the ‘humor and health movement’ among health care providers who believed that humor and laughter help speed recovery, including in patients suffering from cancer1). However, the evidence for health benefits of humor and laughter is less conclusive than commonly believed2. Amusement is a frequent target of regulation: we down-regulate it by shifting our attention to avoid inappropriate laughter, or up-regulate it by focusing on a humorous aspect of a negative situation. Interestingly, amusement that is purposefully up-regulated has been found to have the same beneficial physical and psychological effects as the naturally experienced emotion. Amusement has a few clear expressions that emerge depending on the intensity of the emotion. When people are mildly amused, they tend to smile or chuckle. When amusement intensifies, people laugh out loud and tilt or bob their head. The most extreme bouts of amusement may be accompanied by uncontrollable laughter, tears, and rolling on the floor. Most cultures welcome and endorse amusement. Many people even consider a ‘good sense of humor’ as one of the most desirable characteristics in a partner. At the same time, most cultures have (implicit) rules about what is the right time and place for amusement. For example, displays of amusement may be deemed inappropriate in situations that demand seriousness or solemness, such as at work or during religious rituals.
