Thanksgiving Wishes

By Sally Michelle Jackson

This is a list of the things for which to give thanks

Not for complaining or gifting or pulling of pranks

A holiday that was started with a loving spirit that is like no other

Now reduced to a day of football and gravy our turkey to smother

Least we forget the first day for giving thanks was not celebrating excess

Just having survived and managing to befriend the natives was the success

So as we look at our lives up until now

Look to the skies don’t let your heads bow

In being transgendered there is no shame

Just like so many others it is only a name

We are not defined by this society’s label

One day we will change it as we are able

But for now just look at where you are and then where you started

See how far you have come not how far to go so don’t be disheartened

I am thankful that I am in good health and ready to start

My blood work is fine and no problems with my heart

So from that first moment the hormones began

I could feel with each dose I am no longer a man

A feeling to most would not bring such glee

But for me it is a feeling that I am finally free

I give thanks for the people who have charted the path

I strive to forgive all of those who show me their wrath

So I will do my best to make a complete list

I am sorry if your favorite is one that I missed

I am thankful for Laura’s and my new home

I carry all that warmth wherever I may roam

And for the blessing of oh so many friends

Banding together to help tie up loose ends

Watching over me as I start on my way

Guiding each baby step that I take today

Loving and caring are so often much underrated

With too much attention to being abused or hated

Knowing each day that I am closer to becoming me

And then one day the whole world will be able to see

Not a strange man in a dress

A man with his head in a mess

But there in his place a woman plain and simple

With a smile so big that her cheeks start to dimple

I am thankful for all who have helped me to be me

Most of all I am thankful to finally feel that I am free

Love ya,

Sally

And that is what you are thankful for , Sally...You are able to be you...

I hope that it makes this Thanksgiving the most cherished one ever for you..

And in these coming days, remember your friends who love you from the bottom of their hearts...

Thank for that, Sally.

You said it better than I ever could.

It applies not only to those in transition, but to all of us in the TG Community.

Our goal is to be able to be ourselves without shame or blame or hiding or fear

or guilt. Just to be the person we want to be, without any label at all.

That would be something worth giving thanks for.

And I do.

I thought that I would revive this old poem because the message still holds true.

Things have changed a lot for me since I wrote this - living full time, name changed and living with two of the most wonderful friends imaginable but the one thing that has not changed is the need to take a moment to give thanks for all that we have.

Too much time is spent on feeling sorry for ourselves, we are alive and as long as that is the case we can change, ourselves first and society next so give thanks for all of life's pleasures and work past the hurdles - it does get better.

Love ya,

Sally
