Dr Phil: The Jerry Springer Of Psychology

Guest

Recommended Posts

On Tuesday April 29th, 2008 Dr Phil took a transgender woman apart on his show. I wrote an article about it:

http://www.lauras-playground.com/drphil_sp..._psychology.htm . At no point did he address the non acceptance by the family which was the root of the issue. He missed an oppotunity to educate. Instead he riled up the crowd with his lead in ad to the show. He acted more like the Ringleader of a circus then the un-licensed PSychologist he is. He offended the entire Transgender Community.

I for one am boycotting his show and his advertisers.

Oh Gosh darned, I missed it. My mom watches that garbage every day, too. Best of luck fighting that battle. Mr. Phil (I'm not going to call him Dr.) has the ignorant masses on his side.

I don't watch that show because the man is a charlatan, quack and a fake. And those are just the nice things I can say about him. He and Jerry Springer are only out to make a buck at the expense of unfortunate individuals who are having a hard time coping with events in their lives.

I am disappointed, but not surprised. I have noticed that the lead-in ads to Dr. Phil's show have grown more and more sensationalized and are frequently misleading. He does not seem to have a good handle on whatever type of 'therapy' he's trying for and his methods seem poorly practiced on the show itself. I am actually glad I didn't catch the episode because it probably would have just gotten me more angry and disgusted that it was even aired where hundreds of thousands of people could watch it.

Oprah at least seems much more respectful of transsexuals and other people in the transgendered community by far. Montel was another day-time host who seemed very respectful towards transgendered and transsexual individuals and has in the past aired several key shows I applaud him for. He rarely missed an opportunity to educate whenever possible with his shows on the topic. Unfortunately if I remember correctly he recently announced he was no longer going to do new episodes for his show.

Dr. Phil makes me so angry! He is an embarrassment to psychology professionals everywhere, even though he is no more a psychologist than Queen Elizabeth is a basketball player. His show is a total farce. It makes me sad that so many impressionable people actually listen to the guy.

Ahh, the episode I saw my mom watching. Bleh. It was all about how the transwoman wasn't understanding their side, but from what I seen, "Dr" Phil made her look out to be the bad one in the situation.

Nothing new with Dr Phil. He doesn't have a clue and yet he has a cult-like following. :rolls eyes: <_<

It's clear his Professional peers don't think much of him. Even though he does have a Doctoral degree in Psychotherapy (but no license) and should have a sense of responsibility. He has an audience of millions and I imagine some of those were Transgender whose hopes he took away for a treatable medical condition. TG People who are on the edge of suicide didn't need the push over the edge that he may have given them. With Jerry Spinger people expect an outragous Circus ringmaster right sown to getting the crowd worked up. With Dr. Phil though they expect to get help and answers. His ad for that show looked more like the leadin to a prizefight in the world of wrestling. You already knew whose side he was in before she even spoke. He was deriding her for her appearance by billing it as the "Shocking tranformation from male to female" with the crowd roaring it's disapproval at his urging in his ad. The ad focused on her size and even her walk showing a leg closeup to make a point. He admonished her that it was her (he said his) her fault for transitioning like it was a choice. It was a medically approved treatment and requirement. The family hadn't see her because they could not accept the change. They wanted their dad back and obviously didn't care about her needs at all. If he had worked on getting the family to accept her as she was the problem would have been resolved. Instead he blamed her for even getting treatment referring to her by her male name.

Dr phil took an opportunity to educate and instead used his crowd to promote more bigotry than was there all ready. When people stop supporting the advertisers on his show only then will things change. More than one advertiser has stopping supporting and canceled shows for showing bigotry towards one group or another. The best place to hit Dr Phil is to hit his advertisers pocketbooks. If you can't get people to do the right thing just yelling about it isn't enough. Using economic means can often make more of a difference.

Did Dr. Phil, BY CHANCE, mention any books he's selling?

The man is a quack, I liken him to a preacher. Rehearsed. Terribly uninformed.

at least Jerry Springer has a history you can laugh at...was the mayor of Cincinnati, had to resign becasue he was caught hiring a prostitute (he was also trying to pass some anti-prostitution thing at the time, i believe) and had to resign because of it...and plus, his show's more white trash...something you can barely take seriously to begin with (i.e a large man in nothing but his underwear singing love songs to the girlfriend of his bestfriend who is secretely having an affair with a card-counting crossdresser that he met while at a comic convention in Las Vegas)..."Dr" Phil on the other hand has his show set up like a serious talk show (which it is not) and some peope are led to believe that he is legitimate...or even worse...intelligent.

oh, sorry was that mean?

Dr. Phil has had a lot of things handed to him Brains, Talent for Psychotherapy, Regard from peers are not amongst them.

The fact that he has a cult like following is scary. The fact that people think he's legit or intelligent is worse... Does that cover our mean quota enough for you? And these attachment if you are reading this 'Dr.' Phil is for you... and your hussy friend Dr. Laura :P

And.........the problem is he keeps gaining larger audiance share and notoriety. He doesn't spew hate, he subtely bend his target audience to his prejudice point o fview. He is much worse than the blatant hate mongers like Limbaugh or Coulter. His veneer is his professional credentials{which have been revoked} and his soft talking demeanor.

The man should be discredid by his peers the way Joe McCarthy was in the 1950's

"Have you no shame!" That was the key phrase., that banned that Charltan to limbo. Mia.

This is an old topic but Mia's posting brought it up to the front. I am not sure whom I have the least respect for, Jerry Springer (to our embarrasment here in New Orleans, a graduate of Tulane University) or Dr. Phil (a graduate of just being @#$@#*% STUPID AND OBNOXIOUS.:mad::mad:

Hummmm.... I guess I despise Dr. Phil most. Whadda ya know...

His promotion - originally on Opera - dropped Opra Winfrey from my A+++ list of wonderful people on this earth to D minus. Only recently have I been able to take her seriously again. <_<

Just don't mention Martha Stewart... or the Conservative Religious Right

HUMMMMM - some strong feeling emerging there, Lizzy - I am sure they always say something nice about you!

Don't feel bad Elizabeth, I grew up in Cincinnati where Jerry Springer was the *mayor* for a number of years! And you know how he lost his job? He got caught paying a prostitute for sex. You know how he got caught? He paid her with a personal check! Unbelievable.

Am I the only one surrounded by smart, highly educated, open-minded, pro-diversity and left-leaning people who think Dr. Phil is a saint? I don't get it, he's ultra-conservative and it inappropriately colors every other thing that comes out of his mouth. He doesn't know how to keep his bias out of his "diagnoses" and "prognoses". And half the time it seems like he's using human suffering for his own grandstanding and self-righteousness. Ugh, I really don't like him.

Dr. Phil is a great source for old country sayings, but so was Mini Pearl and she never claimed to be trying to help anybody.

Dr. Phil's approach to psycology is who ever yells the loudest is right.

I am reminded of Will Rogers who once said (OMG another quote), "When I say something stupid - it's a joke, when congress says something stupid - it's a law."

The point is, if you claim to be trying to help people you should really think about everything before you say it.

Lunch was at Cabaret, still free.  The place was quiet: it was the sort of place you took a business client to impress them, and the few other people were in business suits.  Most of the legal profession was there.   She told him of the morning's frustrations, breaking her own rule about confidentiality.  She asked Karen how the branding was going, and Karen had snapped back that she had not started on it yet - they had all these proposals.  Taylor had explained that it was important, for the two o'clock meeting, and Karen told her to do it herself.  Karen pointed out that Taylor could not touch her - her uncle was on the Board and her brother was VP of Manufacturing.  Nor would the two computer guys go out to the plant - they were playing some kind of MMORPG and simply not available. If she wanted the pictures, she should go.  Mary prayed an Ave Maria, but both she and Brenda were racing to get the proposal out. The client wanted it Friday for review.   She didn't bring up what Mrs. McCarthy had told her.  She wasn't sure how to approach it.  She thought of telling her of a 'something more comfortable' she had bought in case he ever DID show up at her door. It was in the bottom drawer of her dresser, ready to go.  Instead she talked about moving to a place with a garage.  Several of the abandoned houses had one, and they had been maintained well with China cash.   Bob had finally realized that when he was introduced as Bob, Taylor's boyfriend, that was just how things were done here. Other people had introduced each other in terms of family relationships, which were strong.  Long before you found out anything else about someone, you knew how they were related.  Family kept people from leaving Millville.    "What is the real name of this town, anyway?"   She laughed.  "I am trying to find that out.  It's 'Welcome to Millvale' when you come into town from the north, and 'Welcome to Millville' on the south.  I have counted two other variants."   "What a town. Roosevelt is like that, with the families, but there is only one spelling."

Bob was on his way home from the dojo and he "just happened" to driver by her place. It was 10:30.  Her light was still on.  He knew exactly where she was sitting.  He saw her in his mind.   A fierce wave of desire that took his breath away suddenly showed up. All he had to do was stop, get out of the car, walk to the door and knock.  She would answer, glad to see him.  She would know why he was there and what he wanted. She would invite him in, maybe get him something to drink, disappear for a moment and return in "something more comfortable."  She would lead him back. Oh, joy.   And never, ever speak to him again afterwards.  Or she would not let him in but be angry about it.  In no way, emotionally, physically, mentally or spiritually, was she ready for this, and he knew it, if he was honest with himself, and she knew he knew it.  She would look upon it as another assault and their relationship would be irretrievably broken.  He would have to leave town. It would devastate her. It would devastate him.    He fought himself.  He was frozen to his seat as his reason and his body fought. He was twenty four years old, a full-blooded male with normal desires; he had just worked out and he was ready.  All he had to do now was open the car door. No one would know. He held his hands, one in the other, to keep one from moving, against his reason and will, to open that door.  He did not want to be a slave of his desires.   He looked across the street.  Mrs. McCarthy, sister of his landlord, was peeking though her window.  She knew his car.  Everyone in town would know by noon the next day if he got out of the car.  Taylor did not need that, either, and she would know, if he came to the door now, what a selfish thing it would be: in his own eyes, in the eyes of Taylor, in the eyes of the town, and worst of all, in the eyes of God.   He sat there a moment longer.  He was, as he reflected, entering into her sufferings in a small way that she would be made whole, healthy and happy: what he wanted more than anything.  But this hurt.  Why had all this come on her?  He asked God again, but there was only silence. He drove home in that silence. He chided himself for even going on her street and for driving on it other nights.  He would stop that, he told himself.   ------------------------------------------   The next morning Taylor went out to her car to go to work.  Mrs. McCarthy met her before she got to it. "I thought you were going to get lucky last night, dearie," she said. Taylor was puzzled. "Why, what do you mean?" "That young fellow - you know, Bob - he's been driving around here, going up and down the street some nights, not stopping.  Well, last night he parked and sat in his car for a while.   I think he was staring at your window.  I think he was trying to get up the courage to knock on the door. I was rooting for him.   But then he drove away.  Faint heart never won fair lady, as they say. What a shame. You two are a lovely couple.  Well, have a good day!" "Thank you, Mrs. McCarthy."  Taylor knew Bob extremely well and knew what had been going through his mind.  She was more than grateful he had not gotten out of the car. Better for him, better for her, better for everybody.  Surgery "down there" sooner than later.  This was driving the poor boy crazy. It was driving her crazy, too.  But she had a lot to work through. Surgery "up here" she said, pointing to her head.  She woke up her therapist on the way to work.  They were still talking when she pulled into her designated parking spot.  That was a perk that had happened yesterday.  She took a deep breath and headed into work. It would be another wild day.

I'm thinking about some interactions yesterday I did, while presenting as male but acting as female, that were far better than I did when I was presenting as male and acting as male.  #girlunderhood. I do a crappy job at acting as male and I am giving it up.  I am not talking about feminine gestures or presentation but just relating as a woman.  People don't realize I am doing it but it is a whole lot easier to do.   You don't just put on a dress and BOOM you are a girl.  You are a girl and you put on a dress.  Or not. Whether I am in jeans or a skirt (I wish, wife would have lots to say) I am a girl.  I don't need $250 in makeup and heels and hose and all that.  I don't need surgery. Honey, I have arrived.  Now I have to work out how that best works in my life, causing the minimal damage and creating the maximum good, but I have more working room.   Oh, and I am still pissed off at everyone and everything. #Contradictory.

@Willow it is certainly possible that my husband planned it. Placing me in the path of an opportunity....he certainly does things like that. GF has done some work for the company as an outside consultant, so I'm sure the company owner knows what potential resources are around.    It could also have just happened randomly. He has taken me to work with him before, just because he likes to have me around. I remember one time that I fell asleep with my head in his lap, and he held a meeting with his subordinates without waking me and making me move.  The company culture is family oriented and relaxed.

The photo is great.  Software is phenomenal but it also is sort of a promise of things to come. Years ago this sort of thing took a photographer and Photoshop and all sorts of things and you would say, "I can look like THIS??"   Me, I am a duck.  That's from my driver's license.  Just kidding.

This is a great analogy. The statement is true as it relates to the tree. The analogy fits because we as a LGBTQIA community are stronger when we stand together. It also work here on Transgender Pulse Forums. The support I feel from so many others has made me comfortable with my stance, because I'm in a beautiful forest of friends. So when I'm out alone and confronted. I can respond and act like the single tree in the field, surviving whatever comes my way. My roots reach back and communicate with others like me.    Standing Strong,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋
