Debt Beyond Paying

Gently

A few drops

Start to fall upon me

As I stand

Over the grave marker

Making my annual pilgrimage

To the cemetery.

Wishing

Each passing year

The pain will lessen

For me.

Sharing a bottle of water

As I pour out

My most troubling thoughts

With you

Dad.

Hoping to find

Some type of closure

With your counsel

Which has eluded me.

But know

It’s only a pale reflection

Derived from my memories

Of you

From past conversation

Between us.

Still

The solace is

Heart-felt by me

No matter

How it comes about.

Guess

I continue

To owe you

Dad

Even in death

A very beautiful sentiment so elegantly put into words. I recently made a visit to my parents grave and felt much the same as you do. As I spoke to them their memory in my mind became so much more clear and real and for just a moment they were there with me, oh ow I miss them so.
