Hi,

Was in the dentist this morning waiting to get a filling replaced. I'm not a magazine reader normally but I found my eyes drawn to the reading rack. Usual car mags etc and then I saw "54 ways to look younger", headline on a woman's fashion mag. That's the one I wanted to read. I was wondering if anyone has found their tastes in reading expanding after realizing more of who they are? I also checked out the other woman waiting for her appointment. Nice woolly skirt and boots.

Wasn't sure which forum to post this in, hope its ok here. :)

Hugs

Rachel.

Rachael,

I always read the fashion and home mags and always have although as a young T filled man it was to check out the chicks not the fashion. At this stage of life its more about fashion, makeup and worldview. Although a pretty face still turns my head. Doesn't make me less of a woman.

Hugs, Charlie

Hi Rachel, I always read the womens magazines at the doctors. As a professional cook I read anything with recipes in it and I mean anything. You never know where you will find ideas. If I discretely look at the other articles well who knows who cares. A well rounded education for anyone male female trans anyone involves a promiscuouse(sp) taste in literature, So read them buy them enjoy womens mags.

Heck, I was even reading a Better Homes and Gardens yesterday looking at the room "makeovers", looking at color combos, and of course, admiring how fashionably attired the ladies were who were showcasing their ideas. the feminine advertizements are better than the ones in Southern Living, which I have read for years.

Pick up the woman's magazine! People will just think you've been waiting a while and are really bored. Besides if anyone asks just say you've been curious as to what's inside these magazines.

Me personally I read Glamour and Cosmo. Glamour for the fashions (because they include plus sizes) and Cosmo for the articles.

Well...how would you feel about a 1-year subscription mailed to your house monthly?

Covergirl has these box kits for eyes (I wrote about them in another thread) that includes eyeliner, mascara and eyeshadow, with 3 different looks: natural, glamorous or dramatic. Included in the box is a certificate for a year subscription to certain magazines. If you go online to the website provided you can opt for Cosmo.

...but if you don't want questions from the mailman or your SO, then perhaps this is a bad idea. Oh wait, or say it's a gift for her then read it after she's done with it.

I really enjoy my reading time, usually before nodding off. I read Vogue, Lucky, and Glamour here, I like to try and pass them on when done, they do stack up.

Seventeen once and while, however that is for my daughters.

It's just a house full of girls here.

I've heard Seventeen actually has some decent makeup advice.

I don't particularly read more women's magazines than before but do enjoy flipping thru some here n there for the fashion parts. Or even goin online to check out female websites about fashion. The last few months Ive definitely gotten away from the typical guy related reading, car magazines, forums etc.

I, for one, will read most any thing. If it has words on it I will likely read it. I have even been known to spend 30 min. reading a cereal box. Or even fliers, pamphlets, posters, bulletin boards, just about any thing.

Um.. I should shut up now, before you all start to think I am totally weird! ;)

I've always read women's magazines. They're way more interesting than men's that's for sure. Unless you like the pictures of the men.

Groupon occasionally has deals on magazine subscriptions. I picked up a year of Cosmo a few months back for like $5. Totally worth it.

I've been interested in getting a magazine subscription, but I'm not sure what. I would love to find something that includes everything I enjoy, like Beauty advice/tips or fashion. Fitness/Heath information. Easy Food Recipes for noobies. And Movies, previews or maybe behind the scenes stuff. I'm a movie freak!

I shy away from Celeb news. Doesn't interest me whatsoever.

If you read magazines you think I may enjoy, let them know the names. I'll look into all suggestions for something to try!

lol, This may sound really... really odd.. but Nope.. I still read the same Magazine! Game Informer! mwhaha.

I had read through some of the "women's" magazines before Transitioning and I wasn't ever much impressed. It was all stuff I could just come online and read about. Really I'm not one to have fashion dictated to me by some bad hack who's never left the confines of New York, L.A, or Paris. I've been having alot more fun just discovering what works for me and what doesn't on my own, and if I need some pointers youtube is way more helpful!

And you may be thinking "Yeah what are you going to read when sitting in a waiting room hm?" and I say to you.. my phone! :D (Besides the tactile sensation of touching paper makes my skin crawl for some reason)

I enjoy reading womenrs magazines. They have so much information in them. Fashion, Beauty, even tips on how to be more feminine. It does not matter to be me where I am at while I read one either. I have even read some articles while standing at the magazine rack in wal mart. Dont care what someone else thinks. Amber L.

..which are three major cities for fashion and fashion shows.

I don't follow fashion religiously but I will look at what's hot right now. Some times it's cute, some times it doesn't mesh with my style. What's great is that you don't have to follow trends verbatim. If animal print is hot right now and wearing a leopard print blouse really isn't your thing, you can still incorporate it through like a bracelet or something.

II like Glamour magazine, but not enough to subscribe. On the Kindle Fire it's cool because it is interactive (links to audio, video, and websites).

I do subscribe to Reader's Digest (also interactive), and Health Magazine. Health is my favorite magazine for Women's health.

Btw, all my subscriptions are digital.

That may be true, but my point was these people don't really get out and see how people really live. I have seen some pretty insane art pieces being passed off as fashion on the runway that I highly doubt any one outside of those cities would ever actually wear.

Beyond that I'm not a huge fan of following the herd. :) Really I see clothes as just another way to express ones personality, if the things in a fashion magazine helps one do that well then great! I can't say I spend an awful lot of time reading any of them, maybe an article here or there might catch my eye on the internet. But for the most part I just follow the beat of my own drum. :) Okay well maybe I kind of also go with a Geeky/Punky/Emo thing (and sometimes with a flare of sophistication) but I really don't know of any magazines that keep up with that style.. or at least none that I am aware of. I suppose if I did come across something that fit my interests I'd give it a go lol.

You know I really gotta stop responding to things from my phone while working out. I end up making almost no sense.. Magazines are good, I just haven't found any that really cover everything I like as the styles I like range from geeky to trendy just depends on my mood. I'm really just against spending money on magazines that would only be helpful when I'm in the mood for it. :(

Anyways I wasn't trying to imply that anyone else's interests or tastes were wrong! Whatever works for you ladies is great just be happy. :)

Does anyone have any favorite websites for these type interests?

I have found that I can look at even sites for RedBook, Womens Wear Daily, Elle, etc. unsatisfying. The visual clutter, the pop ups, and the need to page through, say, 24 hairstyles, to get to the 25th, instead of simply clicking a small visual to blow it up... All this stuff makes site reading pretty unsatisfying compared to the paper magazine itself. I realize that "clicks" equal "revenue" but the inefficiency of the whole experience leaves me cold.

Does anyone have makeup, hairstyle, fashion, etc sites that they LOVE and are easy to navigate?

Btw, Seventeen and Cosmo are not my thing. I remember being disgusted with Cosmo's pornographic headlines when I would go through the checkout lines at the grocery store with my pre-teen son in tow. The story titles were more graphic that any men's magazine, basically telling young women how to be a proper tramp and drive their boyfriends crazy... Talk about a double standard... I think most stores now have a plastic liner in front of the magazine, at least in my area.

They do for some magazines, yes.

I haven't had much luck in online magazine reading because of the things you mentioned, which is why I pretty much stick to paper unless something in the magazine directs me to a website for more information about something.

Specific hairstyles or makeup looks can be searched for using google images and then after seeing a thumbnail result you like you can go to the website it came from. or there's youtube.

"I love you so much,"  Lois said.  They met in the driveway. "I could not live without you." "Neither could I." "What are we going to do?" "Find another counselor?" "No. I think we need to solve this ourselves." "Do you think we can?" "I don't know.  But what I know is that I don't want to go through that again.  I think we have to hope we can find a solution." "Otherwise, despair." "Yeah.   Truce?" "Okay,  truce." And they hugged.   "When we know what we want we can figure out how to get there."   That began six years of angry battles, with Odie insisted he could dress as he pleased and Lois insisting it did not please her at all.  He told her she was not going to control him and she replied that she still had rights as a wife to a husband. Neither was willing to give in, neither was willing to quit, and their heated arguments ended in hugs and more.   They went to a Crossdressers' Club, where they hoped to meet other couples with the same problems, the same conflicts, and the same answers, if anyone had any.  It took them four tries before they settled on a group that they were both willing to participate in.  This was four couples their own age, each with a cross dressing husband and a wife who was dealing with it.  They met monthly.  It was led by a 'mediator' who wanted people to express how they felt about the situation.  Odie and Lois, as newcomers, got the floor, and the meeting was finally dismissed at 1:30 in the morning - it was supposed to be over at 10 - and everyone knew how they felt about the situation.   There was silence in the car on the way home.   "We aren't the only ones dealing with this." Odie finally said.   "Who would have thought that?  You are right."   "Somebody out there has a solution." "I hope you are right."   "I hope in hope, not in despair."   "That's my Odie."

The counseling session was heated, if you could call it a counseling session.  Sometimes Lois felt he was on Odie's side, and sometimes on hers.  When he was on her side, Odie got defensive. She found herself being defensive when it seemed they were ganging up on each other.   "This is not working," Lois said angrily, and walked out.  "Never again. I want my husband back. Dr. Smith you are complicit in this."   "What?" said Odie.   The counselor looked at him.  "You will have to learn some listening skills."   "That is it? Listening skills?  You just destroyed my marriage, and you told me I need to learn listening skills?"   Dr. Smith said calmly,"I think you both need to cool off."   Odie looked at him and walked out, saying "And you call yourself a counselor."   "Wait a minute."   "No."

I have read some of it, mostly in areas specifically targeted at the LGBTQ+ peoples.   You also have to take into account what and who is behind the words, not just the words themselves. Together that creates context, right? Let's take some examples, under the Department of Health & Human Services section:   "Radical actors inside and outside government are promoting harmful identity politics that replaces biological sex with subjective notions of “gender identity” and bases a person’s worth on his or her race, sex, or other identities. This destructive dogma, under the guise of “equity,” threatens American’s fundamental liberties as well as the health and well-being of children and adults alike."   or   "Families comprised of a married mother, father, and their children are the foundation of a well-ordered nation and healthy society. Unfortunately, family policies and programs under President Biden’s HHS are fraught with agenda items focusing on “LGBTQ+ equity,” subsidizing single-motherhood, disincentivizing work, and penalizing marriage. These policies should be repealed and replaced by policies that support the formation of stable, married, nuclear families."   From a wording perspective, who doesn't want to protect the health and well-being of Americans or think that families aren't good for America? But let's take a look at the author, Roger Severino. He's well-quoted to be against LGBTQ+ anything, has standard christian nationalist views, supports conversion therapy, etc.   So when he uses words like "threatens the health and well-being of children and adults alike" it's not about actual health, it's about enforcing cis-gendered ideology because he (and the rest of the Heritage Foundation) believe LGBTQ+ people and communities are harmful. Or when he invokes the family through the lens of, let's just say dog whistles including the "penalization of marriage" (how and where?!), he idealizes families involving marriage of a "biological male to a biological female" and associates LGBTQ+ family equity as something unhealthy.   Who are the radical actors? Who is telling people to be trans, gay, or queer in general? No one. The idea that there can be any sort of equity between LGBTQ+ people and "normal" cis people is abhorrent to the author, so the loaded language of radical/destructive/guise/threaten are used. Families that he believes are "good" are stable/well-ordered/healthy, specifically married/nuclear ones.   Start looking into intersectionality of oppression of non-privileged groups and how that affects the concept of the family and you will understand that these platitudes are thinly veiled wrappers for christian nationalist ideology.   What's wrong with equity for queer families, to allow them full rights as parents, who are bringing up smart and able children? Or single mothers who are working three jobs to get food on plates?

Well yesterday didn't work like I wanted to. I met a guy and started talking and he was wanting to be in a relationship. I asked my kids on how they thought of me dating a man and they said gross and said no. I guess it's time to look for women. I think that is going to be harder. Oh well I guess.

I am reading the Project 2025 document https://www.project2025.org/policy/   This will take some time.  I read the forward and I want to read it again later.   I read some criticism of it outside here and I will be looking for it in the light of what has been posted here and there.  Some of the criticism is bosh.   @MaeBe have you read the actual document?
