Life Philosophys?

I was wondering if anyone else lived by a certain philosophy(s)? Somewhat like a motto or quote that reminds you why you do thing, and why you're here.

Mine is: The end(s) always justifies(y) the means.

Its my motto that I want to live by my whole life, a reminder of why I do what I do, whatever it might be. I like it because i've always felt that one must know what road to take in order to get to our desired goal. No matter what one must have to do along the way, as long the final destination was well worth it.

So is there a philosophy, motto, quote anyone feels strongly about, and lives by? And why? (:

My prime directive?

Do as you feel is ethical and right, but do no harm.

[That is a hybrid of my two paths].

Don't eat Yellow Snow.

Basically, don't do something knowing there is 0 benefit and a whole lotta... poo... in the mix.

For example: Making fun of someone gives you 0 benefit, but there's a whole lotta risk, plus you're a buttpipe.

Mine is one I got from my mentor in photography and has been the foundation of my career and life.

In my battle with my religion and spirituality and this I came across some of the teachings of John Wesley (one of the men credited for helping found the Methodist Church) that I found really hard to dispute. While its been a long time ago since I studied them I am going to have to paraphrase due to the fact I don't remember word for word.. The one tenet that I have held dear to my heart most of my life, or try to at least is simply this... Be the best person you can possibly be...As often as you can be... Regardless of anyone's beliefs its really hard to argue that simple phrase..

"To thine own self be true."

It is not only how I think of myself but it also guides how you deal with others, sort of the step before "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

i dont really have a philosophy but the way i try to live is to endeavour to be mindful, i.e. because actions often follow thoughts, i try to think before i act or speak - when she asks me something, my missus often gets impatient with me when i dont give an answer a second after shes asked me a question, because i have got so used to thinking lst, it might take a few seconds or longer to reply and she repeats the question or says "in your own time then" - i just laugh, shes lovely!

I used to be rather impulsive in my younger years and realised that acting on a thought immediately could sometimes cause negative results, so much better to think lst - it takes a bit of practice but after a while, comes naturally.

Ideals - how you want to live your life.

Beliefs - how you actually live your life (ie. not what you think or say, but what you do).

Beliefs:

We all do what we must.

It's the thought that counts.

Subjectivity is truth (Kierkegaard).

"The key isn't winning - - or losing. It's making the attempt. I may never be what I ought to be, want to be - - but how will I know unless I try? Sure it's scary, but what's the alternative? Stagnation - - a safer, more terrible form of death. Not of the body, but of the spirit. An animal knows what it is, and accepts it. A [person] may know what [they are] - - but [they] questions. [They] dream. [They] strive. Change. GROW."

Wolverine.

Ideals (read - what I'm working on)

Love and Respect should be the only rule (Anarchy as it should be)

Karma (your perception and your attitude shape your reality and how life events affect you - dunno if it's accurate, but it's the gist I got).

If you can't be good, then at least be honest with your babies (Damian Marley).

One race (human), one nation (world), one love - author should go without saying.

There's no justice without equality (V).

Be the change (Gandhi).

Ooooo I like this. Reminds me of one I missed:

"Let's throw out the cravings and things with no use."

Brer Rabbit/ Flobots

This would also go under the current list of ideals and not beliefs, sadly.

Take any risk needed to win the race.

That doesn't mean be dangerous, it means if you dig deep enough within yourself you can always find that extra heartbeat, that extra bit of drive to accomplish the task.

I learned that at the end of a 4 hour and 30 minute race. I was tired and had less than a 1/4 mile to the finish. I let off and the winner past me. He collapsed at the finish line, but he won. He wanted it more than I did. Never again.

"I don’t want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve it by not dying."

"He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."

Interpret that second one as you will.

Try to be the person your dog thinks you are...

Btw, just to clarify how all encompassing your philosophy is, I gotta ask...

Does it include things like lying, stealing, betraying, etc?

The end(s) always justifies(y) the means.

Its my motto that I want to live by my whole life, a reminder of why I do what I do, whatever it might be. I like it because i've always felt that one must know what road to take in order to get to our desired goal. Just curious how committed you are or if it is a philosophy still under construction...

Respectfully

Michelle :)

Well, i'm a pretty committed person, and I feel very strongly about this philosophy. I just feel that one must do whatever it takes to get to your desired goal.

As for the lieing, stealing, and betraying. I don't know, i've never been in a situation like that, but sometimes i'm sure it could be necessary. Depending on the situation. I know a lot of people don't like this, but I think our philosophies always reflect our lives.

I'm loving everyone elses quotes, and philosophies! :P
