What is transgenderism? Is it a mental illness? Is it a physical birth defect? Are transgenders just crazy? Are they just homosexuals who change their sex to be heterosexual? Who are they?

Transgenderism, also known as gender identity disorder, is a birth defect that causes the brain gender, which is determined by the size of the hypothalamus, and the biological sex to be unbalanced. Whether it is a mental or physical defect is debatable.

Transgenderism is an umbrella term for someone who doesn't fit into their assigned sex. More specific terms are transsexualism, cross dresser and genderqueer. Transsexualism as even more specific terms such as MTF (Male to Female) and FTM (Female to Male.)

Someone who is assigned to the male gender but is female is called an MTF. Other names include transwoman, or more respectively, a female. Just like biological females, MTFs have small hypothalami in their brains making their brain female.

Someone assigned female but is male is an FTM. Another term is transman. They are male and can be referred to as just a male. The brain of an FTM is the opposite of an MTF. They have large hypothalami like biological males making their brain male.

A crossdresser is someone who dresses in apparel belonging to the opposite gender. Most crossdressers are heterosexual and identify as their assigned sex, but it is part of transgenderism because they don't appear as their assigned sex. They are not freaks nor perverts. They are human as well.

People make not be male or female. Someone who isn't either is known as a genderqueer. Most people believe there are only two genders and do not believe genderqueers exist, but they do. Ask them for pronoun preferences, politely.

Using the correct pronoun is important for the respect of a transperson. MTF pronouns are the same as female pronouns, and FTM pronouns are the same as male pronouns because an MTF is a female, and an FTM is a male. Some cross dressers prefer pronouns of how they are dressed and some prefer their gender pronouns. Genderqueer may be comfortable with pronouns for their assigned sex, and some prefer gender neutral pronouns or don't really care. If you don't know what pronouns to use, just ask.

Some transgenders are gay, some are straight, some are bisexual, and some are other. MTFs who like boys are straight, MTFs who like girls are lesbian, FTMs who like girls are straight, FTMs who like boys are lesbian.

There are many more types of transgenderism than discussed. All of them are equal. Gender isn't only male or female, it can be both, or it can even be all genders. Transpeople are people are deserve respect about their gender.
