Arizona legislator proposes anti-transgender bill

You would have to show your birth certificate that matches the gender of the public restroom you are entering if someone suspects you are transgender.

Showing your birth certificate to use a public bathroom?

So stupid, and full of fear, only an Arizona legislator could propose it.

That is clearly unconstitutional. There is no way i'm walking around with my birth certificate so i can use the ladies room . Sounds like a sit down strike might be good. Who knows what would be left behind when you stood up.

Ugh! Every legislature has at least one moron in it. Let's hope there aren't a majority of morons there. So, first they pass a law requiring anyone who looks Hispanic to carry papers, and now they want anyone who doesn't look manly enough or girly enough to carry papers. Pretty soon everyone in Arizona will have to carry around a file folder with all the required papers they need to live their lives.

Full employment for Arizona cops, who'll soon be too busy checking papers to catch any crooks.

Well next they'll want to pass laws so that they can deport us too.. News like this makes me kinda glad I don't live in Arizona anymore..

The politest word in the responses was "moron", but now we will have to worry about offending morons.

mmm, it seems very difficult to enforce... i.e., say somebody just runs around accusing everyone of being transgender. Perhaps, just have a large group of people in the state capitol accusing every legislator of being transgender. To be honest/serious though, I don't think it will pass; it looks to be the bill of one person knee-jerking and trying to make a splash.

Just reading the responses on the board, the comments in the articles, and how many threads started about the same issue, there is going to be a major backlash against this legislator.

I'm now wondering if this may actually turn out to be a good thing, and bring more awareness to what transsexuals have to deal with.

I used to be conservative, mostly fiscal conservative and common sense social issues. It has gotten so rediculous these days, I'm voting democratic until the morons in the Republican party pull their heads out of rectal defilade which by what I have seen may be a long while. Is there no one in the Republican Party with an ounce of common sense? Someone who looks at people who have needs that really need government to work to solve problems. I throw my hands up. Kathryn

We won't know until there is a committee vote, but I haven't seen any verbal support for the author yet, even among fellow Republicans. I'll give the rest of 'em the BOD for now. With a little luck, Kavanagh may be the only "aye" vote on this ill begotten piece of trash.

Wow... I just noticed this state representative who is proposing this bill is actually from the town I grew up in.. And worse I'm pretty certain he's the father of someone I went to school with. :(

I wish I could say I was shocked though, but I'm really not. *sigh

The bill is changed, but I wouldn't say it is any better.

This revision could anger the LBG community too. Imagine if you are a butch lesbian who identifies as female, but is told she must use the men's restroom.

According to an article that came out from the Arizona Daily Star:
http://azstarnet.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/arizona-bathroom-gender-bill-revised-to-give-business-owners-immunity/article_50b615c2-9c84-5e59-998c-e8873abd6f5c.html

There is, perhaps, a small inkling of the good senator's motives. Or, at least, a shred of a viable reason. He mentions:

Kavanagh said that preserves protections for those who may be concerned who else is sharing a restroom. "We don't want to have young girls in women's locker rooms being exposed to basically biological men in a state of undress," he said.

With the extreme awareness of child sexual abuse, this comment by Kavanagh, whether he means it truthfully or not, will have resonance to a lot of people. However this bill is opposed, there must be awareness that, for the vast majority of people, they will stand up for their children's sense of safety than they will for the rights of a fringe minority group. And WE need to be aware that though awareness and understanding of the TG condition has become better known in the past ten to twenty years, we don't want to make the mistake of thinking society is more aware or understanding than they really are.

I can understand this. Even though I currently can use the women's locker room at the gym, I don't because I don't want to make a scene and I don't believe I should until after surgery. Yet why didn't Rep Kavanagh specifically make this bill about locker rooms?

The revised bill allows legal immunity for business owners who may use prejudice to determine who can use their restrooms. That is only marginally better than the original bill, and does nothing to preserve the rights of those in Phoenix to use the gender-appropriate restroom. Phoenix did the right thing. Kavanagh and company ought to leave it at that.

Yeah, I'm the same at the Y. I can't legally use the women's locker, though they implied I could. And I can't use the men's locker room because I not only die from embarrassment and discomfort, the fact is that I was nicely blessed during HRT and have long, thick hair and wear a B cup. Yeaaaah... I'm not going to the men's locker room.

Fortunately, they have several family changing rooms, even one with a shower, so I get to go into the one-person/family only locked room and shower/change in comfort.

My next challenge is finding a trainer who is willing to overlook my 6'1" frame and deep voice and work me out with a women's regimen.

I agree with Carolyn on this. The revised bill would still let a business to discriminate against just about anyone not only by how someone appears but by their own prejudice by being able say they looked to much like a male or female.

His comments about not wanting young girls to be exposed is only there to stir up the public to support this.

There are already exposure laws on the books that would take care of someone purposely exposing themselves.

I envision two things. Petitions all over town for his job on a plate, with big yellow posters that read. Mecham, Symington, Kavanagh, The Winning Team! That, and all the unclockable trans men, legally flash mobbing the ladies rooms at churches, sporting events and other mass public functions. They especially need to hang out there when his contistuants families use them too. Flood the web with those reactions.

I was lt go from a job resently, one of the employrs comments was that since I am male, my appearance was considered too disruptive. This was in reference to my breasts. They have since played many more shinangans claiming to the State, that I quit and was not termnated. Long story... JodyAnn

PS--- should I re-apply now that I am legally female? LOL! Not, I would puke.JA

to p or not to p :)

Guess all other problems in Phoenix are solved that they have time for p related stuff.

I agree that all of these public accommodation bills should be dealt with after these states fix their budgets and pensions and school issues.

Love it! This is great news. We need more of this to combat the excessive hate-filled rhetoric and misinformation. 👍

The experience was the same for me @April Marie. I slept much deeper and I woke up each morning feeling so much more restful sleeping with forms solidly in place. For me, wearing breast forms at night started when before I was a teenager. I had no access up to modern breast forms and certainly no way to buy mastectomy bras back then. I wore a basic bra my mom had put in a donation box and two pairs of soft cotton socks. I have some crazy memories of things I did in my youth to combat my GD but regardless, these makeshift concoctions helped me work through it all.   All My Best, Susan R🌷

Colorado isn't exactly a Republican place, and won't become one anytime soon.  I think those folks might be better off not spending their time playing Don Quixote.    We certainly have our share of California "refugees" moving into where I live, so I wouldn't be surprised to start seeing Coloradans too.  I suspect the trend over the next few years will see the blue areas getting more blue and the red areas getting more red as anybody who can relocate tries to find a place where they fit better.

Well, at least it'll be a place some folks could choose.  Options are a good thing.

My family would have gobbled that jar up in a minute or two.  When we do have pickled herring, its usually for Christmas.  I didn't grow up with that particular dish, but I grew up in a Greek family so I like just about any kind of fish if I can get it.  However, ocean fish and freshwater fish taste so different.  We usually have more catfish and tilapia to eat than anything else.    What I can't quite get used to is the tons of cabbage my GF insists on eating.  When you live with a Russian, there is always cabbage soup.  Always.  When I first moved in with her, breakfast was "shchi" for soup and either bread or "kasha" which is a bowl of boiled buckwheat with butter and salt.  Those dishes can be made in any number of ways, some are better than others.  In the winter, it can even be salty and sour like kraut.  Not exactly sauerkraut, but packed in tubs with vinegar and salt so it keeps partially for the winter.  But I drew the line when the cabbage soup included pieces of fried snake one day.  😆

Good evening to you as well @Mmindy   That is awesome that you have support from her side. My dad has communicated with me once and that was because he was forced to. His new wife wanted to spend time with my kids. He hated me so much he was in the process of taking my rights away as a parent to my two boys. He was talking to a lawyer and I called him out on it. I don't love him at all. I'll respect him because I wouldn't be here without him but I wished I had another father. My uncles don't talk to me and unfriended me on Facebook. Almost all cousins except for two are still Facebook friends but they don't give me any support. My mom said she won't support me with that but she has said that she loves me. I have nieces and nephews that are still Facebook friends but they have yet to talk to me. I have one sister that supports me out of three. The other's disrespect me by deadnaming me. They have never called me their sister. I think for them they think it's still a phase. They don't ask questions about me being trans. I have to bring it up and on the look of their faces they don't look comfortable about it.

Good evening @Ashley0616,   I just got offline with HP tech support trying to get my printer tool box icon locked to my tool bar. This is one of the most important features of my printer that I like because it keeps track of ink, paper, and scanned documents. I'm diffidently not a computer geek.   I'll catch up with the other bookmarks next week. We leave to go home for the Easter Holiday with our families. Saturday with her side, and Sunday with my side. What's odd about that is I'm out to more of her side and they're reluctantly supportive. My side on the other hand are less supportive, and my sister just under me in age will not acknowledge my being there. She will be constantly moving to keep from dealing with me. I'm dead to her.   Hugs,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

I used to follow baseball and the team I would cheer for is Boston Red Sox. My favorite player was Papi. He was an awesome guy and even held a child during the National Anthem. I haven't watched baseball for a long time. It just died off to me.
    • Ashley0616
That stinks that nothing transferred, and no bookmarks were saved!

I'm doing patches for now but I think soon I'll go to shots because it's hard to alternate when you are doing two xx patches at once. Unless she gives me Estradiol and progesterone

My view is we are "dependent" on government, because as a society, we are too lazy to stay actively involved. So, we let politicians do our bidding for us.  I think we'd be in a better place government wise if we policed the actions of our politicians.  We elected them; they work for us.  Sadly, we are allowing them to run amok.  We are where we are because we have chosen to let politicians make all decisions without us.  Remember "by the people, for the people?" That was the intent of our democracy.  Today, however, it is "by the politicians, for the politicians," the people be damned.

"Play Ball! Batter Up!" is the closing line of the National Anthem as far as I'm concerned. It's the call of the Home Plate Umpire and signals the start of the game. I grew up in the TV and Radio broadcast of the St. Louis Cardinals. Harry Caray, Jack Buck, Tim McCarver, and Mike Shannon, were the voices on my transistor radio. KMOX 1120 AM pushing 50,000 watts of Class A clear-channel non-directional signal. It could be picked up all across MO, IL, IN to the East. KS, OK, CO to the West. IA, MN to the North, and KY, TN, AR to the South. There has always been a rivalry against the Chicago Cubs, in the National League. As for the American League, I have to pull for the Kansas City Royals. I've also been a Little League Umpire, and fan of everything the Little League stands for. Going to Williamsport, PA and seeing the Little League World Series is in my top 10 things to do on my bucket list.   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Good evening everyone,   I don't think my mother ever cooked a meal that I didn't like. We also had a kitchen where mom fixed the food, dad filled your plate, and you eat it. It wasn't until our baby brother was born that we could have Pop-Tarts for snacks. Before that all snacks had to meet mom's approval, and in her opinion wouldn't prevent you from eating supper.   Well my day started off on a good note, but has become frustrating because my IT person didn't transfer my saved videos I use for teaching. Then I found out that they didn't save any of my book marks for websites I use frequently.   Best wishes, stay motivated,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋
