I'll preface and say that~ I'd prefer some discussion in private PM but I don't realy care how the advice is given.

A few months ago, I had an awful hair trimming. Completely awful. I realize I made the mistake of going to a salon where I had a good trim once.. but I couldn't understand her name, got someone else that didn't speak english very well the last time which was about five months ago.

So naturally, my hair has developed in ways that aren't working in that it's becoming kind of bushy.

I really need help undertstanding just what to tell the stylist I want so I don't end up losing length again.

Hi Kelly,

I'm no hair expert. But, I was lucky: I've been going to Hairmasters for nearly 10 years, always seeing the same stylist. She has helped me through from the very beginning of transition, four years ago.

So, my first recommendation: if you find a stylist with whom you can communicate, who doesn't give you anxiety attacks for weeks prior, then stick with them. Even if they're a few dollars more.

Best of luck!

Love, Megan

To my knowledge, we have had ONE hair stylist on this site, and she has not posted in a couple of months, but we can hope. I was growing my hair out a few years ago, and got into a "family hair cutting salon" just as a whole gang of asian business men got in there for their "business power hair cuts", and as a result my request to trim split ends from my hair, and trim my front hair into an eyebrow length fringe got followed to the letter, but in a "business power haricut" for a man. I was a man, and I seem to have described that hair cut.

It was the last hair cut of any type that I had for over a year, and then I just went in to a womens salon with makeup on and asked for a womens split end trim of about 1/2 inch and some light layering, as well as about 10 highlights, and went home and put the wigs away. .

yeah I remember someone mentioning being a hair stylist!

I might have to just do my research before I get a new cut.

Anybody who is decent with these things welcome to advise too but it's starting to gain that typical long haired male look which I hate.

Until you are on hormones, you will get that "long haired man" look, because your hair itself is fueled by T. My hair changed drastically after taking E, and that outed me before my boobs ever had a chance.

A way I would use is to find a website for one of the beauty companies that allows you to do virtual make-overs, including hair. I think L'Oreal or Redken have them. and they let you photo shop a hair do on your own picture. There are a couple links to that stuff here, but I think they were a while ago. Check down in the Hair and Hair Systems forum too. When you get the look you want, print the page and take it to a stylist and say go for it. Don't be afraid to ask a shop owner if there is someone who can speak your brand of English, at least to get your wants across. Most of my spanish was learned from my barbers. It was survival of the hairyest.

I've been on hormones since december.

Although maybe Im not quite E'd enough yet.

You have hit it there. Any hair follicles that began sprouting after your E started will have female hair texture like your family member females have, so there is about 5% of your new growing hair right now that is female, maybe a little more. Mine took two years before it was a uniform texture and body. Unfortunately for me that meant baby fine, and too doggon straight!! Not even my stylist can make it have body for more than a few hours. At least she got me a nice color to cover the gray!!

Ouch that's not fair after I spent a year growing my hair.

Congratulations and Happy Anniversary!!!! A beautiful milestone.    I hope to see you tonight...I just have to stay awake long enough!!

It's funny with photos isn't it, how we think we look in them vs. how we actually do look in them! I'm hopeless at smiling and I have to try really hard not to frown or look like a zombie. I'm never sure how I come across to others.   I had a moment late last night when my eldest daughter facetimed my wife for some now forgotten reason, and when I was handed the tablet and talking to her, I was fixated on my image in the corner. My hair was wild at the time, I was a bit tipsy and all I saw was a woman! I have no idea what she saw in that context. I'll probably never know.

I hope to see you on the Zoom meeting tonight, April.  I might be late, since I am doing lights and sound for a play that opened last night.  I was home before ten last night, so I think I'll be able to make it.   Today is an anniversary for me.  Seven years ago today, I stood up at the weekly community kaffeeklatsch as <deadname> and announced that henceforth I would be Kathy.  It went as well as I could have imagined: there were some surprised looks, but no hostility and lots of support.  A whole layer of stress disappeared that day and has never come back.  (There have been other stresses, but that one is gone.)  I have been me full-time ever since that moment.

This is a scarily accurate description of what I feel!   I hope I don't sound too schmaltzy by saying this, but I remember when I signed up to this forum last year, during the sign-up process the question is asked, "Why do you want to join TransPulse?" to which I wrote, "Looking for a home where I can freely write about my issues and interact with similar people."    I think I just found one. ❤️

Good morning, everyone!! I was up early again - already on my third cup of coffee having walked/fed the dog and read the local paper.   We have a birthday party for a friend to go to this afternoon but no real plans otherwise.   I hope to be able to attend tonight's TGP Zoom session. It's been weeks since I've been able to participate with the illness/loss of our dog, two horrible colds in succession and our trip to chase the solar eclipse.   Have a wonderful day and look for the goodness in it.

I think we tend to be overly critical of our looks, whether we're trying to express ourselves as masculine, feminine or anywhere along the gender spectrum. For me, I use photos as a way to track my progress, to help me find my style and look and to help me find ways to improve myself in posture, looks, make-up, style......   I didn't really think about our FB avatar being public but then realized that when people search they do see it.   Since I'm not out to anyone but my wife, therapist, priest and people here, my FB page remains "that guy." I have created a Bitmoji that is relatively androgynous moving slowly towards the feminine. Long gray hair, earrings, softer features...I'm transitioning it along with myself. :-)
