Earn your pronouns, don't expect them

Interesting reading regarding the direction (legally or otherwise) of pronoun use, especially in the context of "free speech" rights in the US.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/volokh-conspiracy/wp/2016/05/25/claims-by-transgender-schoolteacher-who-wants-to-be-called-they-yield-60000-settlement-agreement-to-create-disciplinary-rules-regulating-pronoun-usage/

My advice is to be prepared for the PC (politically correct) backlash on this topic. So earn your pronouns out there, don't expect them. If you are granted proper pronouns be grateful. I was referred to as "she" and called "ma'am" on the phone today, I earned them, I did not expect them.

Good luck out there, be realistic and understanding. There is a lot of abuse out there......

This is a bit of a mind bender even for me as I work (OK, Play) with some non-binary younger people. Old tongues and lips are set in their ways and take a while to change. I think the real point with the folks I know is that I have tried, and keep trying to "get it right" and have shown that I do care about them and their lives. I may be slow on the words, but they know my heart is there for them and that is the difference I can see here.

I earn my pronouns by being helpful and caring without being PC, and without resentment or other negative behaviors toward other people, and I care about who and how another person best identifies.

Pronouns will become increasingly difficult. I find using they instead of he or she difficult. Maybe zee would be easier but for now i still haven't been asked to make a change for anyone i know. It's coming i'm sure but not yet. When it does i'll try to respect the person asking.

Hugs,

Charlize

The article was a very interesting read, thank you for sharing it. I think that its partially proof that our society is starting to take transgender pronouns seriously to an extent, but that being that PC will definitely cause a backlash of some kind. Though I agree people should be called by the pronouns that they feel represents them, it will not be instantaneous for others to accept those new pronouns to be used. As well as, mistakes that can occur even after people have come to call the person by the new pronouns. Or some people will just not accept it, and its a situation that has to be considered.

This topic reminds me of the lyrics to the Beatles song, "A Little Help From My Friends."   "What do you see when you turn out the lights?"   "I can't tell you but I know it's mine."   Carolyn Marie

@Ivy have you read the actual document?   Has anyone else out there read it?
    • Abigail Genevieve
I am reading the Project 2025 document https://www.project2025.org/policy/   This will take some time.  I read the forward and I want to read it again later.   I read some criticism of it outside here and I will be looking for it in the light of what has been posted here and there.  Some of the criticism is bosh.   @MaeBe have you read the actual document?

      *older, not holder, oops :P

      No problem!

Old topic, but I gotta say my favorites are: "Stop hitting on minors" (doesn't work if you're holder tho) and "Sure as [squid] not you"

Abigail, I think we will just leave the other posts where they are, and the discussion can start anew here.  It is possible to do what you ask, but would disrupt the flow of the discussion in the other thread, and would require more work than it's worth.   Carolyn Marie

I am in too good a mood to earn my certificate today. I am sure something will happen that will put me on the path to earning it.

It's likely most cis-women consider a fitting unnecessary "because they know what  they wear" and get used to the wrong size.  The instructions for what your size is are simple and why go to any further effort?  You measure your bandsize and you measure your max and subtract the two to get the needed info for the cup size.  Then you buy the same size for years until it hurts or something.

Congratulations Lorelei! Yes, it is a powerful feeling to have the documents that say "you are you".

Here is space for discussion on this, since the topic is large and could derail another thread SOMEBODY started.   Could some dear, sweet, kind Moderator pull everything related to this from the Voting for Trump thread and put it here?  I don't know if you can do that; I am the new girl on the block after all (blinks sweetly).

I will have arrived when I have a b*tch certificate of my own.  I think someone called me one once.

That’s fantastic Lorelei. I’m so happy for you.   Hugs,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋
