There Is Something In The Air

by Sally Michelle Jackson

I have sensed something coming for a long time now

At first I thought I was mistaken but I'm not sure how

I had hoped that it would be good something pleasant to ease my mind

Once again it has shown itself to be something of a much different kind

A world full of people so different and yet so much the same

All divided by something as simple as a label such a shame

It seems the time has come at least it is obvious to me

To answer the question of life itself to be or not to be

The choice should be so simple and yet most often not

The hateful speech and actions of others contribute a lot

So many lives shattered by violence and bullying

To a terrifying point that it has such a familiar ring

As to almost slide by unnoticed unless the body count rises high enough

To shake us from our complacence and acceptance of a world too rough

We need to concentrate on solutions but that seems to be asking entirely too much

Why do we even attempt to remain politically correct while discussing hate and such

The cure is not in gun control or even in limiting speech

It lies within each of us so close yet still just out of reach

To look at someone different and not to feel the rise of senseless hate

Of fear and misunderstanding for someone different as we tend to rate

Passing judgment based on appearances or who you love or beliefs is not the way to live

It is not our place to sit and judge but to allow our hearts to open with all of its love to give

Learning to hate appears to be so easy but maybe there is a better way

If only it was easier to love then we wouldn't have to fear to live each day

It seems at times that the war is lost and behold all the bigots reign

I see it in the eyes of the mourners at vigils trying to sooth their pain

It has become the norm that we accept the unacceptable to mourn briefly and then we just go on

Time to change all of that and tear down that throne built on hate leaving them nothing to sit upon

It is too much for me what can I do where do I even start

The fight begins within when you change your own heart

Love ya,

Sally

Indeed the hardest thing to change is myself. The start of ending hate starts within each of us. Thank you Sally!

Hugs,

Charlize
