Does anyone else get these super intense cravings now they are doing HRT ?

These are not normal cravings I get , they are off the charts ! Its not like , oh I need a Snickers Bar type craving , its my body is screaming to have these foods put into it , and it rewards me with total food bliss and body bliss , soooooooooo odd ?

I just did my Blood Labs , excellent balance perfect health too by the way .

My cravings started right away and have not faltered in their need , and they go like this ;

Raw Oysters w/Saltines , lemon juice , and Tabasco Sauce !

Green Olives with Pimento , by the JAR !

Chips and Salsa , Mild ?

And all Seafood !

This is insane !

I'm in good shape , not fat not skinny and I walk everyday .

How about you girls , or boys :-)

Pickles. Pickles, pickles, pickles. Did I mention, Pickles!

Can't get enough jars home fast enough.

This started when I started HT and, almost, 3 years later it has not changed.

cravings is a way for your body to tell you : I think I'm missing something. I don't think it have to be a real lack necessarily. That's why pregnant woman have a reputation for having them: their body suddenly need far more nutriments.

It's possible that you can have them on hrt because puberty is an intensive job for our body.

on this totally non scientific note, have a nice day :D

I prefer seefood, I see food and I want to eat it :)

My appetite has increased exponentially since going on Estrogen. I have also gained an unshakable addiction to chocolate, my favorite being Butterfingers.

I'm from N.M. originally so I'm a big Mexican Food Junky, and that includes Tex-Mex. and New Mexico style. Now I just want lots more of it, and I've noticed that I have to exercise a lot more to shed unwanted pounds since I've been on HRT (2 years Friday!). Right up there as one of the best days of my life (there are others that of course are more important, I just mean for self acceptance it was pretty significant of a day!).

Cravings have always been there, they just seem to be calling me louder!

I'm nuts in a great way now , loving every second of HRT , and I get to eat great food that's great for me too :-)

I could bathe in a 6 foot Claw Foot Tub filled with Oysters and easily eat my way out of it :-)

Pass the Tabasco !

Cravings... oh yeah. Pasta, chips and salse and sea food here too. The craving for "salty" comes and goes (I do apparently have a cycle). Asian food too. Pre-hrt, I constantly wanted Mexican food, but now... Asian.

No.

And speaking from the perspective of Molecular BIologist you shouldn't be experiencing random bizarre cravings unless: You are taking a more than just estradiol (potentially progesterone?) and you're making your body think your possibly in pregnancy in which case it could be attempting to store nutrients in preparation for this... OR it's a placebo effect where you think HRT should make you feel intensely different and you're mind makes it happen. Believe it or not estrogen is chemically not all that different from testosterone, just slightly different grouping. All it should do is effect the expression of one set of genes over the other.

Hi there .

I'm glad I believe in Magic and Unicorns then :-)

That's an entirely too black doom thinking Scientific THEORY for my comfort .

Science , good science , forever changes , based on facts . Therefore everything is open for an interpretation that what is may be proven to once again be theory .

Einstein's theory is a good example .

At one time people thought the World was flat too , and fact .

I absolutely disagree that taking away Testerone with Spiro , then flooding an anatomic male body with Estrogen doesn't produce BIOLOGICAL effect , including food cravings . Nope , not buying that one .

With all due respect of course :-)

Hi Kelly Girl,

I would have to say no, I am not experiencing anything new in the form of food cravings. As a matter of fact I am more determined than ever to eat healthy and shed a few more pounds. I have found that I am much more conscious of my body and very determined to look after it. Exercise is the thing I am possibly craving but it is not a food group. Good luck with all those yearnings though.

Well you can of course believe whatever you like. However I never stated that anti-androgens such as spiro, or hormones like estrogen doesn't lead to a biological response. In fact I am fairly certain that I stated that it leads to a pretty specific biological response on a cellular level. The organic chemistry of how hormones work is pretty straight forward and, unlike the ideological belief for a flat world held by the powers that be during the early renaissance, is pretty sound science. Anecdotal evidence based on personal experience is fairly irrelevant when there is some documentation of psychosomatic responses of individuals undergoing transgender HRT expecting X and then experiencing X.

Male to female (and of course FtM) HRT with anti-androgens along with hormone treatment is often likened to be a second puberty because that is essentially what it is. You are disabling the chemical that signals secondary sexual traits of one gender and replacing it with the chemical that signals the opposite secondary sexual traits. So there may be some evidence related to altered emotional states especially early on, however wild food cravings is generally not associated with puberty of any kind.. Increased food intake? Yes especially in teens obviously.. However odd cravings? That has far more common association with pregnancy, again for the reasons I stated above.

Now if we are talking about does eating feel more fulfilling does food taste better than it did before? Very likely especially if you are going from a state of clinical depression to a state of relative elation.

That's all I'll say about the subject here.

Spironolactone does inhibit your body from absorbing salt (sodium).

https://www.drugs.com/spironolactone.html

So an increased desire to ingest salty foods might be noticed by some individuals (like myself).

My Dr warned me about this when I was just starting HRT and advised me to not eat too much salty foods to compensate.

That's a really good point Cyndi Rae .

I knew Spiro was the diaretic and blood pressure equation in this mix , but when I do my Blood Labs my potassiums and everything else is phenominally balanced , no cholesterol issues , notta , no sodium increase or decreases , odd . Some of this HRT then leads me to believe exactly what you to pointed out , the possible sodium increase because of the Diaretic , and my Unicorn and Rainbow and Sunshine Theory that the rest of this crazy craving stuff just , IS WHAT IT IS :-)

Thanks for sharing

This is crazy stuff , I started getting this craving for Anchovy ?

Wife out and about after work shopping , asked if she could pick up a can of Anchovies with Capers please and Sesame Melba Toast .

Wife comes back with 4 cans of Fillets and 2 boxes of Melba , and 2 full jars of gourmet Capers in Oil .

She tells me , " I know you too well " ..

What a Gal :-)

She rides this Crave Roller Coaster with me .

I just finished a can , with copious amounts of capers on Melba , extremely content now .

This would all be allot easier to explain if I were pregnant . But then again , if I was pregnant , I would be writing this from my VILLA in Costa Rica on the Beach in my new Town I just bought that I just became QUEEN in :-)

A Girl can dream :-)

I am with Charlize here - Chocolate :)

Blueberries as well - I like almost all fruit but love redcurrants, just that the seeds are a pain with my teeth :( (and this years crop are nearly ready :) ).

Not on hormones so don't know if it would have any effect but I do get cravings for different things regularly even though my diet is fairly balanced

That's me too, Mae.  I don't think it's me as much as it is the camera (that's my story anyway).  Cameras hate me.  I never met one that liked me.  I often wish I was photogenic; sadly, not so much.   However, you look terrific in that selfie!

April, I'm so glad things went well when you came out to your spouse.  So often, things can go sideways.  It's a hurdle we all have to jump at some point.

What an amazing life you've shared with your wife. I can understand the trepidation you had at telling her at that point in your relationship but it certainly saved all of the guilt, the questioning and the secrecy that would have filled your lives had you not.   I'm on the other end of the spectrum having denied and buried my truth for decades and fast approaching 50 years of marriage when the dysphoria and depression finally came to critical mass and I unloaded it all on a New Year's Day morning. As you might imagine, it led to a lot of questions, of questioning everything, of anger and hurt on my wife's part. Guilt, embarrassment, fear...and anything else you can imagine on my part.   Thankfully, our love for each other has always been the foundation of our relationship and, ultimately, we both agreed that staying together was what we both wanted. It was a tough year but, now into the 2d since my coming out, we've hit our stride and are exploring this new norm in our life.   I do so love your blog.

I thought I would try my version of this. Changes in bold.   I am Transgender.  Sometimes it is remote, sometimes close. Sometimes I am euphoric, sometimes depressed. It is something I cannot get away from and cannot welcome enough. I see some things both ways that neither men as men see or women as women see.  I can be gentle and compassionate and hard as nails. I was born with male genitals but a female heart   I have my heart.  Whatever it is. When I look at a female, I wish I looked like her  Depends on the woman.  When I look at a male, I wish I did not look like him   Ditto. I envy female movements, softness, behaviors, appearances, fashion...EVERYTHING Female Depends. Sometimes I get angry at them because women spend time and energy in ways men don't.  It is not necessarily bad.  I could do without the gossip. Not all women gossip.  Excessive focus on fashion is something I find annoying. And expensive. I tolerate all things male out of social obligation...not because I feel like a man or because it makes me happy....but because that's what I was forced to believe was my only choice....beginning in early childhood. Sometimes it is helpful to put on the Iron Man suit and act accordingly.  But I have seen some tough women. When I look at myself in the mirror in only bra and panties...I can see my nude female body...and it makes me smile and feel amazing and warm inside....yet sad because that is not my reality. I could go either way, mostly. Really.  In tests in the last two years technicians have gone really quiet when they see how little body and leg hair I have.  I looked at myself this morning.  Remove a few clues and a girl is standing there. When I look at myself in the mirror in only boxers...I can see my nude male body and it saddens me deeply and makes me feel sick and depressed...and at times...even ashamed....Because this IS my reality. At this point I am not going to do that. In the mood I am in I might break the mirror. My true gender does not influence my sexual interests or preferences...or change who I am....in any form or fashion. Gender identity is in no way connected to anything sexually related on any level.  Not sure I want to make that statement so categorically. Life as a male leaves me with a feeling that something is off...that something is missing...that something is not as it should have been.   Well put. The idea of having to continue living as a male...as someone I am not...for the rest of my life...even if its only part time...causes great sadness and anxiety within myself. I've got priorities beyond this that this must fit into. The idea of living as the girl I am and always have been on a full time basis...regardless of where I am, what I am doing or who I am around...brings me great joy, happiness and a sense of peace within myself.  Would be neat. Looking like and living as a girl makes me smile.   Would be neat.  There are downsides.  Looking like and living as a guy makes me sad.   I have had lots of practice accepting this. I am Transgender....I am a girl
