Any tips on dealing with overheating with a wig on?

I overheat way too easily, so it makes it really hard to wear my hair for very long, even when I have privacy, and the sweating becomes a problem with my makeup and general comfort.  Is there anything I can do? I just got a shorter haired wig, which is better, but it still is a problem. Do I just need to lose a bunch of weight or something? lol

I am just as interested in answers as you are, hon.  I have always worn short wigs, and there are times when it feels like my brain is boiling under there.  It is especially bad when I've traveled to places with both heat and humidity.  I have not found any solution, other than to keep hydrated and try to keep out of direct sunlight, such as with a big-brimmed hat.

I would give almost anything for natural hair, but short of spending $10 K or more on hair transplants, I don't see that happening.  :banghead:

Hi ,

I know this wont help you, and your right plus of cause headache,s as well, so after 11 years of wearing wigs I gave up ,only will I  for our Edwardian group will I wear a wig  and if I don't have to I wont, in my normal day to day life  as a normal female I don't have hair or wear my wig , I make design head wear to suit my clothes or just scarves tied similar to a turban style and that suits well or sun hats.

As I don't follow fashion I make and wear different  styles that look good.

as a female with out her hair, im not at all bothered,  in the beginning I was its just another detail in life that I work through and live with it,

any way my many friends all know and nothing is said, though I do get asked if I have or had cancer,

So  I make friends  through that as well and no im not a cancer  survivor,  my Mom was.  for some of us in our family we loose our hair early in life,

I am not completely sure if this is helpful, but here goes!!.  One of my early friends while I was Cross Dressing was an actual wig designer for one of the major wig brands, and pointed out to me that most wigs have about 40% more fiber than any full head of human hair ever does.  Someone who has been trained by the manufacturer, or who is long term self trained can actually remove the extra fiber, either by removing full wefts, or simply cutting extra fiber out of them.  One source for this service is a seller of medical grade human hair wigs.  Wigs are available for cancer patients or alopecia patients at those shops which are frequently "appointment only" shops.  Getting rid of the extra fiber will cool things down a lot. Lace front  wigs ARE about twice as hot as conventional wigs, even if they are the most natural looking wigs on the market.

FrigidHaire FAQ

Q: How does it work?

A: FrigidHaire absorbs the heat emitted by your scalp and blows it into the faces of those around you.

Q: Isn't that somewhat irritating to others?

A: It is very irritating to others.

Q: How does this affect climate change?

A: Everything affects climate change. You don't need to know how.

Q: Won't people call me an “airhead”?

A: Yes. Yes, they will.

Q: Why did you create FrigidHaire?

A: Thank you for asking, anonymous person. We are dedicated to the proposition that in all aspects of life, cooler heads should prevail. That's more than a clever play on words. It's...well, actually that's pretty much all it is.

Good Monday humor Kenna!

Hi On The Path...  I'm not sure what you overall hair situation is, so I'm not sure if this might be a possibility for you.  I had great hair till my 30's and then it thinned out. Boo!  :-(. My mom had the same thing happen.  She was devastated. She tried wigs etc. but just couldn't stand them.  She grew her hair out and then had a wig stylist make a partial/filler piece for her and then did a weave kind of thing.  I did the same thing.  The back of my hair is mine.  The sides and front are a mix.  We have a stylist in town who is very expert at making partials and fillers.  She's TG so she has some insight.  ;-)

Currently I went full wig so I could try some different looks out befor commiting to something new.  I do like the look of the lace front wigs but Miss Vicky is right - boy are they hot.  Like others, when I wear mine it's stay out of the sun and stay hydrated.  Otherwise, when I do housework or gardening or run/hike, it's bandana time.

I've not been wearing my wigs, trying to grow my hair and do something with it. I can be wearing shorts and a tank top and if I walk briskly for a couple minutes, that's all it takes for my upper body to become soaked. I was hoping that HRT would solve this but hasn't, and after seeing some of the other comments from people that transitioned a long time ago, I'm guessing this is a common problem........ :/

My wife is a black woman... you wouldn't believe the things I've learned! So, if you live in or near a metropolitan area, you have a Black Hair Store nearby. Trust me, its there. If you can figure out where it is, go in there and ask them to match your real hair. Then buy hair tracks, they clip in. Nobody will know you have them clipped in if you do it right. Go on youtube and watch videos of black women using these things. This kind of stuff is gold for us, I'm telling you. When I first came out to my wife I bought a wig and she bought one for me as well. They were both way too hot to wear until recently (the one I bought is the one I'm wearing in my avatar pic)! Eventually we started just buying hair tracks on Amazon and trying to guess my color which never happened! After we finally just went into a Black Hair Store they were able to match my color in minutes and its perfect! If you don't have any hair to be able to clip to, you can also just buy hair tracks and sew them to the inside of a hat. My wife made me one out of a thin cotton material. She calls it a 'slouchy hat' and I didn't have to worry about the color because it hid all of my really short hair while it was growing out and it wasn't hot at all!

Hi Everyone,

Reading all these posts makes me realize how lucky I am. I don't have trouble getting too hot with my wig on. Even during the heat of summer it didn't bother me too badly. Of course, when I lived as a guy, I always wore a hat, even inside, so I guess I'm used to having my head covered. When I first started wearing my wig, I would get a headache once in a while. But I discovered I was being lazy about puting my wig cap on and the band would get twisted, making it too tight. Making sure the wig cap band isn't twisted took care of that problem completely. Now I wear my wig comfortably all day long. I guess one has to find a wig that fits tight enough so it doesn't slide all over your head, yet loose enough that it doesn't constrict. I've even seen (more expensive than mine) wigs that are adjustable. As to the overheating, sorry girls, never had to deal with that problem.

Lots of love,

Timber Wolf?

The one thing about this position, if you want more hours just wait and be flexible.  I’m now working until 7:30 pm instead of 4:30.

Welcome Mattie! I would recommend the first step is finding a gender therapist and see if you are or aren't. Then one of the biggest steps if you are do you want to start hormone replacement therapy. The decision should be thought long and hard. There are irreversible effects. Looking forward to your next post! Take care!

@Willow, it's great to hear about your wife's progress! It's also fun to hear about day-to-day stuff, like work. It's nice to think of this thread as a kind of morning chit chat place to go, like if we had a big table at The Daily Grind and were just listening and sharing over our morning brews.
