San Fran Creates First Transgender District In U.S.

I find this a very interesting development.  The Tenderloin district is an interesting area.  I get the specific area's relationship to civil rights activity, especially regarding transgender people - that part is nice.

After my GCS surgery in 2013 I had to stay in the San Francisco / San Mateo area for several days after all of my "medical equipment" was removed to be sure I did not have a bleeding or infection problem develop.  The people who were with me knew the Castro and Tenderloin districts, and even though my walking was a bit tender, we did some exploring in the Tenderloin, walking a few blocks during the day.  I did see some prostitution contacts being made and the odor of Pot was in the air several places.  I had a bit of soul searching going on, that here, I was newly post op and had something that many of the people there only dreamed about.  It was not really full blown "Survivors' Guilt" that I have felt on occasion at other places, but I had heightened feelings during that time frame.  I did feel a kinship with the Trans* people I saw and felt no threat from them toward me, although we did nothing more than give way to each other on the sidewalks.  What I did get from it though was the vast diversity that Trans* people have in their lives, and yes, some of us have had it easier than others but we are still kin to each other in ways that cis folks will not understand.  The area is on the low economic end of things and not AS SAFE as more affluent neighborhoods, but while being extra watchful, I would not feel the horror or terror that some people would, neither do I feel the judgment about it as others express.

I was in San Francisco for a conference and we went to a nice Italian restaurant. The hotel was on the border with the tenderloin and we accidentally went through it at night coming back. Did not seem much worse than any bad parts of DC. I'm surprised it has not been gentrified with all talk of high rents in San Francisco. But is has been about 6 years since that trip.

Give it time. SF is a big area that has been under gentrification for years I believe.
