Conservative Christians?

Hi,

I've been wrestling with this one for as long as I can remember, finally thought I would ask.

How can someone who is following the teachings of a somewhat radical liberal be a conservative - it seems to be quite a contradiction of terms.

I would be interested, particularly in the conservative view that helping the poor is not really an obligation, along with health care.

How can socialism be such a horrible word to Christians?

There is certainly a problem with "cherry picking"  short snappy verses from the Bible to build your faith on.  Jesus did say in The Gospel of John at chapter 12, that "the poor will be always with  you" in rebuke to Judas for a comment on why Mary of Bethany did something nice for Jesus, who knew his time was getting close.  This is taken way out of context today as a reason to not serve the poor and help them.  I have already literally heard this from some church folks that if it was good enough for Jesus to not help them in one special instance, it is good enough for today's folks to follow in all circumstances.  The are shooting at the side of a dang big barn from 3 yards away and MISSING.

One of my co-workers asked about in the off hours. we were looking at some asian art including some representations of hindu gods (she was raised in India). My response was that I was christian, but I do not believe in organized religion. I find that it detract from what being christian means to me. I also told her I felt organized religions all to often require their congregants to be more loyal to the organized portion religion than to God.

Excellent point @MarcieMarie12 .  I have been told several times that "Heaven" only lets in certain denominations for sure.  If I mention my denomination it becomes "iffy" that I will get in, and that I should put my money in their church's offering plate to be sure I could go to ---!!
