Background checks (Gender)

If someone does a background check, are they able to find out the sex you were born? I'm getting a new birth certificate soon, and I was wondering if there was anything I could do to prevent that from happening(if this does happen)

I don't know about your birth certificate because it depends upon who is doing the background check and for what reason.  I believe they would have to ask you for a copy of that record.    

Some states just amend your current certificate while others seal the old one and issue a new one.  That would be something you might want to check with the State you were born in.  

When an employer checks your social security number the agency may come back saying there is a mismatch on the gender in their records, if you haven't updated that record.  From what I've read not many companies pay much attention to these reports as long as there is a name match.

It will depend on where you are born.  If here in California, your original BCert will be sealed, and only available for criminal investigation of very specific felony's  with permission from a special judge in Sacramento.

These days it would seem that stealth is kinda mythical. For a young person, it would be nice to leave it all behind....

I would never assume anything in today's world of "big data".....

Hhmmm....I'm not certain how far back "these days" occur, but I'm kinda sorta inclined to agree w/ the above quoted post.

I knew a physician once-upon-a-time who went to great pains & lengths to eradicate her past male-identity from all imaginable documents/records.  Perhaps her imagination was more limited than she thought, or perhaps it's just not that possible to cover-up/destroy all the footprints that have been left over the course of several decades....Anyway, despite her best efforts to avoid disclosure, her past caught up w/ her through the vigilant efforts of an angry patient (circa turn of the century)

Despite her best efforts, greater-more-thorough efforts than anyone else of whom I've heard, she was outed.  Not exactly sure how, but I do know that her birth certificate and other routine identity-documents seemed to have nothing to do with it.

I firmly believe that a routine background-check would not have revealed this physicians male-past.  However, I am equally firm in my belief that no one's secrets/sins are beyond scrutiny of a motivated adversary (i.e., save those sins/secrets which exist, unspoken, solely w/in our own minds).

I.E. you still have tons of people you knew before you transitioned and if they check that out (like a previous neighbor), then they will out you But few background checks go that deep. Mostly government security clearances..
