Binding Options?

Hey everyone. :)

I'm currently considering buying something to help me bind. I haven't bound (?) before but am very interested in experimenting and seeing how I feel with a flatter chest.
I always wear sports bras, which up until now, I had thought were great (you cant run with no movement. :D It's like having no boobs at all!), but now I'm noticing the uni-boob which definitely doesn't help me look male/more masculine. I'm not large in that area (A/B?) so hopefully that means there are more options that might work?

I don't particularly want to get an actual binder, mainly because of the health risks associated with them (but a few other reasons are contributing slightly too- cost, difficult to wash incognito, if I did get a health problem would confuse family (how did you get a broken rib?), etc.).

So, my question is what options are out there which are safer than an actual binder but still bind effectively without giving a uni-boob? (are there even any?)

Some people have suggested under-armour compression tops and I really like that idea. However, I don't know what health risks are still associated with that (or other alternate binding methods) (are they the same? less? what are the risks?). Also, I'm pretty sure I can't go a size down because under armour do not seem to make XS in mens. I am right at the bottom measurements for the small. Is it likely this will still bind well enough? Will I just need to layer a couple of compression tops with it?

Any advice, suggestions, stories are greatly appreciated. :)
(and I have read the safe binding post on this site ;) ).

THANKYOUU!! :):D

Well, I'm MTF but I wear a binder for work for the time being until I'm ready to come out to them. I normally have a small 'B' cup so it isn't like I have much to hide. I got mine off of amazon.com for between $10-$15 each. I got two different sizes because I didn't know which ones would fit. I can wear the smaller one, but the larger one is more comfortable and still does the job. My work is very active and physical with bending, lifting, and even some minor contortions to be able to get my arm inside the machine to fix it. It doesn't restrict me at all except for my breathing. I make sure to try an breath from my belly, not my chest and that helps. I wash them in the bathroom sink since every time I've thrown them into the washer they've gotten damaged. They look more like oversized sports bras without the cups. To someone who doesn't know better I bet you could claim it's just a new kind of sports bra. Hope this helps!

Love and Light!

From what I've read you will most likely need to try several until you find the one you like and is comfortable.  As to health concerns, don't wear it 24 hours a day.  Possibly just when out and about and never sleep with it on.

Thanks for the responses. :)

What binder do you use Cindy? That's a good point, if I got a short one I could say it was a bra. ;) Thanks.
It's good to hear you can still move around in it too. :)

Thanks, Jani. Hopefully, some feedback from people who bind will help me find something good faster. ;) but yeah, it'll still take a few tries probably. :/

Is binding reasonably safe if you follow all the rules (less than eight hours, wear your actual size etc?)

Okay, Alexthecat. :) I find it hard to imagine a compression top giving cracked ribs, lung problems etc. but I guess if you're wearing it tighter than you're meant to it could happen.

Get a GC2B and be sure to follow their sizing guide and measure yourself correctly. You should have no problems after that. You want the correct thing the first time because shipping to Aussie land is not cheap. Some people wear their binders for 12+ hours with no problems. It is good to be aware that binding can hurt you if you are doing it wrong but you are being way overly cautious. Basically when binding you just need to listen to your body and it will let you know if you are doing damage (which I doubt will happen unless you have some other issue).

I wore compression shirts instead of an actual binder for several years and it worked just fine. It isn't "jury rigged".

I do not recommend those asian binders above. They will be way to small and you will most likely end up getting the wrong size.

  • 5 weeks later...

I have tried the Under Armor compression, but find them a bit too loose and the arm cut outs too large.  I'm big and need to wear men's clothes because women's clothes don't fit my muscular arms (and yet under armor were too big..) I'm a size M in men's.

I found Tesla compression shirts on Amazon and they fit much better (and fraction of the cost).  But... they are hot.  I live in Florida and they are just too hot.

I have a small chest as well.. what I do is pin my nipples down with tap, wear a cotton tank top, a men's undershirt and a men's shirt.  I'm not 100% flat with this, but..

a. I don't need to wear a bra

b. I don't need to wear anything confining like a compression shirt or a binder

c.  It's actually bearable in the Florida heat.

d.  I've seen cis men with larger chests..

I am being pretty cautious Alex but some of the problems that can happen are pretty serious so yeah. It's better to be over cautious than under cautious imo.

Thanks for the info an suggestions Cindy. :)
They're nice and cheap. Although, sizing does seem like it could be tricky.

I'm thinking if I am going to get a binder I'll go for a short one from GC2B. The compression top sizing is risky (coz they don't go very small) and the price is similar I think. :/
Has anyone tried GC2B? I looked at some reviews and they were pretty positive..

Hey Chris :)
haha I'm in Australia so heat will definitely be an issue in summer (we're talking up to 104 Farenheit sometimes)!
What do you mean by "pin your nipples down" ? As in just so they dont stick up or kinda taping to your side to control the chest movement?

GC2B came out after my surgery so I have never used it personally, but I have never heard a bad thing about them and they are recommended a lot on the other forum.

Hey,

yes, I use KT tape and make an X over them so they don't "poke" through the shirts.  I find it makes me look flatter.  If you are unsure what KT tape is, just google it.

Oh yeah... then a binder might be hot too...

i refuse to wear a sports bra.. so taping down the nipples, a good cotton tank top and a men's cotton undershirt under my shirt and I'm pretty much good to go.  I've seen cis men with bigger man boobs.  But I see mine as pec's... lol.

Okay, cool. thanks Alex.

ahh okay ;)
I feel like I wouldnt be comfortable running/moving around if my chest wasn't full supported. :(
I'm glad it works for you though! :D

Yeah, thats true. That's why I would go for the shorter cut one (so that its cooler). Hopefully then it would only give about the same warmth as a sports bra (though it would perhaps give a bit more coz its tighter).

Lol, I'm always wearing sports bras. It'd nice if I had no fat on my chest but since I do I prefer it not to move around..at all.
Yeah! :D Pecs :)

Yeah... I guess from my body building my chest is muscular and I don't have the feeling I'm not supported.. only when I run, but then I'll wear the Tesla men's support tanks.  I don't even wear a bikini when I swim, I just wear a men's rash guard.

I don't fit in women's clothing anyways, im guessing the binders are in women's sizes.

Binders are not in "mens" or "womens" sizes. You get a measuring tape and base your size on what the sizing chart says.

I've bought dozens of binders over the years. The Asian ones also fall apart quickly and seldom fit right. Underworks tends to roll and be hard to get into if long and from the back short binders and sports bras show a bra line that no cis guy ever would have. But the Underworks swim binder works well as a full time binder. They zip so are easy to get on, and are made in such a way they never roll and because they are for an active sport they allow a good range of movement. I have a couple but the main one Ive had 6 years and worn almost daily. It still works.  They are pricey but worth it. Ive found positing to each sode and more like pecs helps create a masculine line. Also not overbinding. Take pics loosely bound and tightly bound and really look. Many men have pecs (some even inject silicone for them) or moobs but they still have a wide chest to hip ratio. Binding too tight actually makes you look more feminine. Because people don't look at wheter you have moons but at the overall proportions. They only go to other things when that is off.

I skin dive and I have asthma and when I'm diving or doing something that requires good breath I wear 2 UnderArmour compression shirts a size smaller than my usual tee size with a loose tee over them. Doesn't compress as much as a binder but no one has ever questioned me or even looked twice when I'm wearing them. And I'm at least a B to C size still. UnderArmour is the only brand that works because they have a patent on the material. Everyone else is a knockoff and won't work. Also before you put a tee over them they look awful because they are like a second skin. An added advantage is that they are designed to be cool in summer and wick moisture for the heat gear and warm in winter for the cold gear. Be sure you get the right ones. It does make a difference.

The question is always how much you have to deal with and will a binder pass with a tee shirt. As noted, tape can work well in some cases. One thing that always helps, up to a point, is learning to put your shoulders up and back. Wearing military shirts with two breast pockets with paper in them works well as does a bit of padding sewn into the shoulders. Bush hats, boots and such help too. At some point, even for cis women, were talking loose jackets often with padding not only to hide whats left but also, smooth out the curves of the waist, hips and such. Even MTF's and crossdressers use such tricks when they don't want to be noticed. Pass or not, how you present is the most important thing.

Actually I never would use a binder as a tee - they just aren't designed for that as far as any I've ever seen. Maybe if someone was already flat chested but then why get a binder? The FTM swim binder from Underworks is designed to stand alone for swimming but I find you still need a rash guard or tee over it .

Everything I have read and heard says tape is dangerous because it does not give adequately and lung and rib damage will happen. Sometimes people get away with it for awhile, but sometimes it sets in quickly necessitating a trip to the ER and resulting in not being able to bind again at all. For me it isn't worth that risk. Ive seen guys post here that they were taping and doing okay only to post later about an ER visit and urging people not to do it. Taping is definitely not a good idea for any physical activity. Not only because it doesn't give adequately but because it can slip with moisture.

I do agree that presentation is important though I wouldn't want to stuff anything I have carried sunglasses and a phone etc in shirt pockets when I only wanted to wear compression shirts rather than a binder under a shirt.

Body language, and attitude (and I don't mean that macho man attitude that too many trans guys mistake for being male but instead owning your space and moving freely. Watch movies and videos just to see men and women walking through their world, or just sit and observe people. I had to learn to carry my hands differently for example because women and men have different body language even in small things like that) are what makes the difference. Be a man rather than trying to pass as one. I went from very seldom passing to passing (hate that word but will use it here) almost 100% over night. The only change was in my mind. I realized I AM a man with body anomalies rather than a man trapped in a woman. There is a difference. It freed me to BE a man . But all that is a different subject from binding. We get far too focused on the physical aspects when they are only a small part of living and being accepted in our gender. After all you see cis women as flat as adolescent boys in the chest and cis men with DDs and no one questions their gender.

Mm, yeah Chris. It sounds like our preferences or bodies are just different. :/  I definitely need support all the time (unless just sitting down) XD ;P :) ah well. Thanks for the input, even if your solutions aren't quite right for me. :)

Men's and womens sizing seems silly to me. Measuring the noteable areas makes the most sense I reckon. ;)

Cool! Thanks for the suggestion, Johnny. :) I haven't had a look at the swim one coz I thought it would just be for swimming, but I'll check it out and if I get a binder I'll definitely try your suggestions about not going too tight and positioning.
Have you tried GC2B?
The cooling of the underarmour compression tops is definitely a positive. Do you know any places on ebay that consistently and reliably sell underarmour sleeveless tops?..Though even with cheap pricing, sizing still doesnt run very small..
I was thinking if I got a short binder I would put a black singlet over the top (under my shirt) to try to get rid of the line..do you think that would work?
I don't think I'll try tape. I've seen too many things saying not too plus it doesn't sound very comfortable.

Attitude is definitely important too. I'm trying to get more confident. I find it hard to "be a man" though when I'm still questioning everything so much. I'm kinda scared I'll just brainwash myself into being a gender I'm not. :/

Clair, what is the paper in the chest pockets supposed to do? (I dont understand).
Hehe no-one my age wears bushhats or boots in my city, so that'd probably look out of place, but you make a good point about the amount of different things that can be done to present differently. :) Thanks  for the suggestions.

On ebay I just did a search for UnderArmour in the size I want and set it up to save the search so I get E-mails and don't have to search every day. I bought every one that was cheap till I built up an inventory of them. The cold gear is great for winter- I hike for hours in temps in the teens- and works better than the much bulkier thermals to keep warm as well as flatten. It's a good time to buy them too if you can

Haven't tried the GC2B. They are relatively new and came along after I decided I'd spent more than enough on things I ended up disliking. Zipping up the front makes the swim binder so easy and comfortable I always come back to it. My first was a gift and I used it for swimming till it dawned on me how much better it worked than anything else. And if I've been doing something strenuous like brush cutting and I'm alone it's easy to unzip a few minutes and relax.

This is all a journey and a long one. You won't,  can't,  figure it out all at once. It takes years. You hear people say to relax and enjoy the journey and it's true. I spent my career as a social worker, trained in observing people, but even six years and a half years into full time I'm still learning and changing. You were trained in tens of thousands of ways from the cradle to interact and see yourself as a woman. Your mind may have rejected the validity of some or a lot of it but it is such deep conditioning that it can't be undone in a few days or weeks or months. The trick is learning how to be true to yourself as a human soul but express it in a masculine rather than a feminine way. I found things I didn't want to give up and that was my choice but over time I have found most of them fell away naturally as I evolved naturally  more and more socialized male. And that was okay too. I never felt I fit in female but now I don't think I could even fake it at all. Give it time and it will grow more and more comfortable. Puberty really isn't any less stressful the second time than the first but we do have experience and maturity to bring to it the second time if we are lucky.

Paper or such just helps cut the curves. Consider, a police woman with a  bullet proof vest, military shirt and all sorts of stuff hanging off it. Most often you have to look elsewhere for gender markers. Questioning and experimentation is important and done right you will find out who you are and most comfortable as. Finding others who think like you is important. Every city and school has FTM's and mannish women. They are often like fairies, as you have to believe in them before you can find them. Finding your place in one of their mob's will help you sort yourself out.

Thanks Alex, when I first started looking for binders, I assumed since they were more for women wanting to flatten their chest, they would be more in women's sizes and not in men's...

and since a lot of the binders were coming from Asia.. well that really made me think most were in women's sizes.

Good to know they are more customizable.

I've worn two Underworks binders for 3 or 4 years now. A Tri-top in a slightly small size covered by a Cotton Concealer in the size up from that. I've not really had any problems and together they flatten my normal C size. I know people say you shouldn't  wear two but to my mind, it's been a life-saver

Please , please read the safe binding pinned thread. Double binding is not safe and it WILL do damage. I've seen several threads in this very forum where someone said they were fine double binding only to have them post that they were in the ER or had run onto other serious problems very soon after. once it was the next day! It causes lung tissue to adhere which may not be immediately apparent till something causes it tear. It causes rib deformation which is permanent and means even surgery won't give you a male chest. and if you wait till a problem arises it can mean you can never bind again.

It also creates a more feminine rather than more masculine line. Some cis men  have moobs - sometimes huge ones. . And some cis women are flat chested so people do not look to the chest to gender people unless something makes them question. BUT they do judge by body propottions. And one of the biggest initial indicators is body shape. Men have wide chests, whether they have moobs or not, in relation to their hips. Women are the oppsite. I've looked twice at any narrow chested man I ever saw because they look effiminate, even long before I realized I was trans. I'm trained by my profession to observe human reactions and body language and other people do it too. When you double bind you put yourself into a female shape because you decrease your chest width.

B eyond that people judge on body language. Men move more freely and actively then women. You can't move the way a man naturally does when tightly bound.

FTMs usually felt most comfortable with their bodies when prepubscent and the development of breasts signaled a time when everything changed. We are unconsciously driven to bind flat as no adult male ever really is. And I do understand that because I am immensely chest dysphoric, but I want even more to be seen and live as the male I am. I don't bind tightly and I'm still well endowed. I did build my arm muscles so it looks like I have the kind of pecs cis guys are injecting silicone to get. I get hit on by women frequently and haven't been misgendered in over 5 years.

Take pics both double bound and just with a binder with the moobs properly positioned and look at it honestly.  Look at adult cis men . Look closely and honestly You may be very surprised.  but please don't keep harming yourself, it will catch up and it can happen fast.

Johnny

They may win a few battles but not the war! as @Davie pointed out there is little truth if it full of lies, inconsistencies, and ignores evidence to the contrary. I saw this article earlier and have to agree here. Truth will win. This isn’t the first time this tactic has been tried. Always stick with the truth!

good evening   good day at work today.  I did do some things a little out of normal but everything was completed successfully.  As I said earlier, the Asst Mgr was my second today.  I don’t think she was too happy about that.  Several customers asked her where Richard was her answer was the manager cut his hours.  Well that is only part of the story,  his hours were cut just like mine were and several others but in his case he made demands about his hours that couldn’t be met.  But instead of making some non complaining remark about it she made sure to lay it all on the manager, thus throwing the manager under the bus.  Similarly when asked why she hadn’t been at work early mornings, she said she was being punished by the manager.  Well that’s partly true, she wouldn’t do what the manager told her to do so she took her off opening.  But secondarily she didn’t have a car to drive temporarily.  You can’t open the store without a car because who ever opens has tasks that require them to leave the store, so it was  at least partly her own fault.  But she chose to throw the manager under the bus for that.  I think she is asking to be fired for insubordination.  And if the manager gets these conversations off the security tape tomorrow she just might get her wish.   im pretty close to being ready to take the asst position but there isn’t anyone ready to take over my job, at least not at our store.  I suppose the other shift lead could if she is able to work earlier shifts and if the other closers were just a bit more reliable.   Ive been wanting some homefried chicken.  We found a BBQ place not far away that had such a chicken but I is made fresh when ordered so it has a 30 minute wait.  It was worth the wait and the other things we tried were also good.  Another restaurant on the list.  At least half of what we ordered came home for another meal.   i get to sleep in tomorrow, I go to work at 1:30!   Willow

It was nine thirty.  Saturday morning had rolled around more quickly than Taylor could believe.  She groaned, whined, thought of a million excuses why she should just stay in bed and knock the alarm across the room.  But it would still be going on, and so would the promise to Bob: when the gi came in, she would be in. There it was in its nice package, out where she could not miss it.  Why didn't she hide it?  She shook her head.   Up she got.  Sometimes you just do.  Her hair was a wreck. She patted it down and went to the bathroom.  Nine forty five. Shower later. No make up. She hated kara-tay especially at an ungodly early hour on a Saturday morning. Bagel. Instant coffee.  She was five minutes away when she realized she had forgotten the gi.  Back she went.   Into the dojo.  She had about five minutes to get the gi on.  She attempted to slip in unnoticed and go to the little restroom. Someone barked something out in Japanese or something, and there was a dead silence.  She turned to see what was going on. Both classes were getting into their lines, but everyone, including Bob, was bowing slightly. To her. Bob nodded, and she returned the bow.  Life started again. She was touched.   Bowing three times. Oath. Kata.  She was facing off with Judy as her partner.  Judy looked worried.   "Sometimes you just gotta pick yourself up and try again," Taylor told her. She nodded. "Let's do this."   Lunge punch and lower block.  They traded off like nothing had happened the last weekend.  Lunge punch and middle block. Lunge punch and upper block.  It was kind of like dancing. Taylor enjoyed it.  She wanted to learn more.  Brown-belt Maggie adjusted position of limbs and hips for both Taylor and Judy, telling them when she was about to do something: elbow up a bit".    "How'd you do?" Bob asked her later.  They had both gone home and showered. Now they were in a booth at a fast food place.   "I was kind of disappointed class ended. I was ready for more."   "That's my trooper."   "I'm not allowing you in my apartment until we are married," she said suddenly.   "You think I am a problem?"   "No.  I think you are safe. You passed the test  I am the problem here."   "Okay."   "What did the doctor tell you?"   "It's complicated.  More tests coming.  Like getting into college.  I got a letter back.  It seems there is this big fat M on my transcript and my current picture is not an M type picture.  I have to write a letter and send them notarized proofs and stuff. Just delays. This is a pain. Nothing cut and dried."   "I will say.  I'm glad I'm not transgender."   "Hah. You are pulled into my world.  You are involved in this stuff as much as I am, and, as you put it, of your own free will."   "You are worth it."   "I hope so."   "I know so."

On the way back to her desk she was interrupted by six short, urgent conversations that had to be attended to. Then she slipped into the women's room and locked the stall door.  She took a deep breath, then another, and allowed herself to shake for five minutes,  Then deep breathing, ten in and ten out, stretch up, touch the floor, neck rolls and she was fine. She used the toilet and a woman knocked and said, "Taylor, are you okay?"   "Ready to conquer the world!"  on her way out she found her makeup was fine.  Three stalls, two sinks.  If she ever designed a women's room with three stalls, there would be four sinks, with plenty of space to plunk your stuff down between them.   She met a deferential Karen.  "Here is the branding I came up with," she said.  And she went back to working as hard as Brenda and Mary, who looked up worriedly and then went back to the proposal.   Shortly before 5:00 she received an email with the title Consolidation and Compensation.  In it she learned that the position of office manager was eliminated, and the current office manager was to become the chief executive officer. The former CEO, along with the CFO, the chief legal officer, and sundry staff, had been terminated, per the Board of Directors.  Effective immediately everyone would receive a base salary of $20,000 with a commission to be set by the individual's supervisor.  Each supervisor would be given a certain percentage to distribute.  Most functions they had been handled would be outsourced as needed.   "The question of what profit was made last year is frequent enough to be answered.  The company lost over 500,000 in fiscal 2023.  At this point further cuts are not anticipated.  We will be strategically adding positions that will enhance our profits. Hard work is expected of everyone."   Her two web guys had been complaining because their games had been remotely uninstalled.  After the memo came out they were absolutely silent.  That gave her an idea, and after an exchange of emails they were reassigned to maintenance out at the plant, effective tomorrow morning.  There were lots of weeds that needed pulling, if nothing else. That email went out after they left early, for the day.  The maintenance foreman was a no-nonsense type who did not tolerate slacking, and they would learn a thing or two.  This also freed up two spaces for her to put new people.

So…I didn’t know your Facebook avatar was public. So, on my birthday, a couple people used a group avatar message to wish me a happy birthday…and now my Facebook friends can see a short video of my female avatar dancing with an old friend’s and another with my uncle’s avatars. So am I “Facebook out” now? 😬

By which I mean there is a cultural stereotype of what a man is, and one of what a woman is.  Even worse, of what a transgender person is.   You be you.   I read of a boy who thought he was a girl because he did not adhere to some (rather toxic) conceptions of what it means to be a man, so he decided he was a girl.  He was told he didn't have to conform to stereotype and got happy. "You mean I don't have to transition?" He didn't want to, and was relieved.   Once upon a time if you were transgender they told you either you transition or die.   Incorporate the best of what it means to be a man and the best of what it means to be a woman as much as you possibly can, and let the rest go.  Be fully human. Be alive. Don't conform to some cultural crud.

Except for this thung thwister: Theophilus Thistle, the successful thistle sifter, in sifting a sieve full of unsifted thistles, thrust three-thousand thistles through the thick of his thumb. Now if, Theophilus Thistle, the successful thistle sifter, in sifting a sieve full of of unsifted thistles, thrust three-thousand thistles through the thick of his thumb, how many thistles can'st thou thrust through the thick of thy thumb . . . in sifting a sieve-full of unsifted thistles? Success to the successful thistle sifter!

You have given you and us a big clue right there.  I hope you have shared this observation with your Endocrinologist and are willing to take their advice about changing that behavior.    Non prescribed herbal or animal supplements can have a negative effect on your body's use of your available hormones.  Also, your genetics are going to be controlling what your body is going to do with your hormones, and again, that is for you to consult with your Endocrinologists.  On this site none of us are licensed medical personnel and we cannot give you advice on your health more than what your doctor can.  We have rules that we enforce against our members advising about "Folk Remedies" because we have had members who have gone that route and badly damaged their health and quality of life.  Only thing I can go anywhere on, is that maybe if you change your expectations of what should happen, you will at least not be in danger of harming yourself from anxiety.

Hi lovely people,   I'm a 25 yo MtF woman, and I've been suffering from low estrogen issues since October 2023. I completely lost my feminine libido, my breast completely stopped growing, my estrogen levels dropped by a lot (despite NOT decreasing my E dosage) and thus my dysphoria drastically increased. I think it is worth mentioning that, for my health issues, I had been taking ----- Lamotrigine for months & had been on ketogenic diet, and these things seem to be a culprit of my current issue. I weaned off Lamotrigine some time ago and gave up on keto diet, but it still doesn't seem to help. My estrogen is still low (44 ng/ml) and my libido hasn't come back yet. In general, I struggle with my dysphoria so much because of that and, to be honest, I don't know what to do. I've tried so many dietary supplements, yet I didn't get any effects from them. My endocrinologist didn't know how to help me. She only suggested to increase my daily estrogen dose (to 3x per day ------sublingual estrogen tablets and 3x per day ------ estrogen gel applied to armpits or thighs), which I did, without any effect.   Please, help me. Prior to keto diet & Lamotrigine treatment, I'd never had experience like that. I'm basically helpless and have no clue what to do. Having to deal with low estrogen is a horrible experience to me and it affects my life severely.   BTW, my T levels are always within female range.   Do you have any clue what exactly I should do?
