Monthly Site Expenses

Recommended Posts

Dev

Hello!

In an ongoing effort to be transparent about the expenses related to running the site, I wanted to share with you the source of all of our costs as well as our "wish list."  Here you'll see a breakdown of the site's individual expenses along with the total cost of maintaining them.  Averaged over the last year, we have received about $30 monthly in donations; the balance of these expenses comes directly out of my pocket.

I want to assure you that the site will continue to run, but ongoing donations are immensely helpful.  While I wouldn't have taken ownership of the site if I couldn't personally guarantee its continued availability, I must admit my limited income makes it hard to squeeze the funds out in some months.  If you are willing and able, please set up a one-time or recurring donation - even a small one - to help ensure the future of the site.

Licenses:

  • Chat: $50.00 monthly - rather than a licensing expense, this expense covers publicity for chat, the forums, and the site in general.
  • Forums: $45.00 every six months.  This license comes due every August and February.
  • Resource Locator: $50.00 yearly.  This comes due every September.
  • Email Delivery Service: $8.50 monthly.  This ensures that our emails show up in inboxes as opposed to spam folders, and provides us with extra insurance against emails being rejected outright as they were on our old server.

Hosting:

  • Server rental: $40.00 monthly.  This is a recent expense as of this writing; we were forced to move to a new server to allow site-generated emails to be sent once again.
  • Server security software: $90.00 yearly.  This comes due every October.  I'm sure you can understand why I don't want to name this software in a publicly visible place and give the evildoers of the internet any ideas on how to beat it.  This cost represents two individual pieces of software that protect us from hacker and spammer attacks - those evil-minded people have bots that test our servers and are successfully blocked up to around 400 times a day.

Miscellaneous:

  • Post Office box: $48.00 every six months.  This comes due every May and November.  (I'm sure you can understand why I don't want my home address plastered on the internet.)

Total Monthly Investment to Ensure Payment of All Bills: $125.67

Advertising:  If I'm able to contribute - or receive contributions that help me to contribute - more than that bare minimum, any funds held over will be used for advertising purposes.  We want to get the word out far and wide so we can help as many people as humanly possible.  Advertising campaigns will be launched any time we have $500.00 or more in funds not otherwise marked for payment of bills.

Those who wish to donate can do so here.

Recently, I asked for donations to help cover the summer licenses as well as convert the site to a new platform.  I'm pleased and very, very grateful to say that the generosity of the TransPulse community made possible everything I set out to do.  Incorporation and the subsequent registration as a non-profit organization is something that isn't in the cards at present, as the legal expenses, filing costs, and risk to those who would take places on the board is far across the line of what's tolerable.  This means that we can't issue tax deduction receipts for donations we receive at this time, which is why contributions from our members are doubly appreciated.

I'm immensely proud to be part of a community that looks after its own in the way this one does.  I'd like to offer my sincere thanks to all of you.  To those who have donated or will do so in the future, your gifts are treasured.  To those unable to give financially, know that the experience you bring to the community and the guidance you offer your fellow members is priceless.

Thanks Dev for the updates on what the current costs are, also on what you've got on your wish list! Very forward looking. I wish you all the best and hope that those able to do so, can spare a few $ frm time to time.

Since the site name change from Laura's Playground to TransgenderPulse we're finding that we aren't as visible on the internet as we used to be. What's needed is an advertising campaign. Since this tends to be on the expensive side and since we don't have the funds available, we would like to ask if any of our members would be willing to contribute toward this fund. Anything that you can give will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Is there a "donate" button somewhere?

You know, this is the third time I've posted introducing the idea of donating to the site, and also the third time I've forgotten to put in the link to the donation page.  Got that fixed now.

I am so horrible at asking for money. ;)

those evil-minded people have bots that test our servers and are successfully blocked up to around 400 times a day.

As I type this there are two of them attempting to register to this site. Imagine the havoc they could cause if they actually succeeded.  That's why it's critical that we have adequate security in place. I've seen over a hundred at any one time attempting to hack in. Our site wouldn't last five minutes if they were to succeed.

I've updated the list of expenses.  There's been a significant reduction in the overall monthly requirement.  While the licensing cost for the forums almost doubled every six months, I was able to negotiate a better price for our monthly server rental.  We can still use all the help we can get, especially as we prepare for January - both chat and forum licenses will come due then, to the tune of over $100.  Please give if you can.

I really like this place. So I donated $30. It is one time for now. How do you know who donates what?,  especially if it comes from another name that I hate hearing out loud. Lol.

Oh I don’t need recognition. I was just wondering. This site should almost run itself money wise. If monthly expense is really that low. It makes you wonder what donations are paying for on other sites. Lol I am happy to help.

Thanks, Nora!  I will admit I wondered who was behind that one, but it's often the case that people donate using legal names that they don't use when interacting on the forums.  The truth is, half the time I have no idea who's responsible for donations. ;)

I would gladly donate some funds to this great website! I'm just a little confused because on the browse tab there is not a spot for donate. I'm just a little confused on that because when I first signed up I did not notice an option to donate. I was wondering if Trans Pulse has any social medias to get the website out in the world. I think that would be key in drawing in some new members. I will spread the word! i'm happy to donate if it helps this website stay alive! Best of luck! :D

Lots of love,

Hi, that funny. I was actually looking at Tampa/Sarasota as well. I've lived there before and loved it. My Dr is also based out of Sarasota so that would be nice. I use to frequent a club called the castle a lot the first time I started to transition. I think the costs of Florida are pretty much safe but the inner parts are very very intolerant. I don't make a very good country girl at all. I don't hunt, fish go mudding or anything like that. I hate sports ball games. Whats scary is im caring less and less about what people think. Im not sure why but I it doesn't really bother me if people know I'm  trans. A couple girls have guessed it and are cool with it and hang out. They ask moisturizer advice and hair growing advice. The guys though, thats another story. None of them hang anymore and I don't care but I'm so scared of ending up in a sugar cane field dead. Im saving as much as possible, which is hard while transitioning without insurance, to relocate as quickly as possible. I go to Lauderdale a lot, walk around downtown taking pictures and whatever else and nobody notices me. No wispers or weird looks. I love it. Thank you for the compliment btw. Im actually starting like the person looking at me from the mirror. I'm starting to feel like me.   Ashlee

Hi, I was planning on waiting a lot longer than a few months for sure. I go In to see my dr and get blood work for  my 3 month checkup in about about 2 weeks. I'm hoping all goes well with that and I will figure it out from there I suppose. I guess everyones timeline is so much different. Definitely can't go by someone else's experiences. Don't be surprised if things start going fast for you. Im 45 and holy smokes, the changes are just crazy. My emotions are way way different, my boobs hurt so bad, my skinny jeans aren't so skinny in the butt area anymore but still lost weight, skin is so soft and man muscle is melting away. Things are heavier too me. These are all things coming up for you, and its awesome! Sounds like im complaining but no. Its so great. I wouldn't trade what going on with my mind and body for anything. Just keep on keeping on I suppose   Ashlee

I can't help reading them sometimes, but I don't make a habit of it.  It just leaves me frustrated and angry, and there;s no reason to torture myself.   Carolyn Marie

So, I'm one of the weird guys who actually reads the hate-filled comments, and doesn't take it too personally.  I actually enjoy debating.  I don't call them names.  I like being calm, and not taking their bait meant to upset me.   Anyone else that way?

Thank you all. Yeah, I do feel better. But still some what shocked. I think it will be with me for a while. Now for the next step.   Kymmie

Thank you. I'm really just venting. The day I joined the forum, I bought groceries. Walking out of the store I passed a woman who called me a "lez". Normally it wouldn't have bothered me, but my time here in Texas has been so miserable it was almost literally adding insult to injury. I have no hope of ever fitting in. I'm just going to try to focus my energy into what it means to be my true authentic self. If people accept me, fine. If not, fine. I have cats, my photography, and a love of books to keep me company. Contributing to this forum will prevent me from becoming a total and complete troglodyte.   Hugs back atcha   Thank you so much for the encouragement. I needed to hear something positive.  There's a quote that comes to mind: "To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting." -e.e. cummings   Nice to meet you as well.

Kymmie this is good news.  I am so happy for you.  It is interesting that those closest to us know us very well.   My wife had offered to let me have her "girls" also but I told her it doesn't work that way.  I grew my own too.    BIG Hugs!!! Jani

Hi Ashlee.  You might look into the Tampa area as I know there is an active TG community and the area is fairly tolerant.     You look great for having just started!   Please be safe.   Jani
    • Jani
You have an interesting mix of music genres there!   Your insurance plan may have a search tool you can use to find the right person.  Also we have a Resources page that may be helpful.  Also try https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists   All my best, Jani

Hi Larry.  I don't know if you are seeing a therapist but they may have an idea of where you could locate the additional support you need.  You also might try here  https://www.tgrcnm.org  or  http://www.lascrucestrans.org   You don't say why the in-person support groups didn't click with you but I will offer that you should try again.  People come and go and the groups do evolve.  Don't despair, you'll find what you need.     Cheers, Jani

Ashlee, I'm about 6 weeks behind you on HRT but I ask myself questions regarding my timeline periodically.  I'm much older so I doubt I'll have as much change as you have experienced.  As some have mentioned to me, the changes sometimes dictate the speed of one's transition and their "coming out" timeline.  I was really hoping I wouldn't have to make any big decisions til 2019 as to coming out to family.  I'm not sure if that'll be possible or not..if things start to change as rapidly as they did in your case.  I'm sort of playing it by ear but right now only my wife knows anything at this point.  I hope I have a little more time before I'm forced to share with my family and friends..but who knows?   SusanMtF

I am so happy to hear about this.  I applaud your courage & willpower and wish you the very best.  I bet you'll feel wonderful after the initial shock calms down a bit. Communication is a main key to most if not all good relationships.   Im very happy for you! SusanMtF

I will never vote democrat!!!!!!! I don't like their policies!!!! But I don't vote either. never have and never will!!!! If i were to. I would be an independent. I am not really a fan of trump but i do like some of his policy when i relates to the budget and military and immigration. Sorry but This is how i feel. And i don't think impeachment is in the cards. You can't impeach a president if he has done nothing wrong. Again, I am NOT a trump fan!!!
