Monthly Site Expenses

Recommended Posts

Dev

Hello!

In an ongoing effort to be transparent about the expenses related to running the site, I wanted to share with you the source of all of our costs as well as our "wish list."  Here you'll see a breakdown of the site's individual expenses along with the total cost of maintaining them.  Averaged over the last year, we have received about $30 monthly in donations; the balance of these expenses comes directly out of my pocket.

I want to assure you that the site will continue to run, but ongoing donations are immensely helpful.  While I wouldn't have taken ownership of the site if I couldn't personally guarantee its continued availability, I must admit my limited income makes it hard to squeeze the funds out in some months.  If you are willing and able, please set up a one-time or recurring donation - even a small one - to help ensure the future of the site.

Licenses:

  • Chat: $50.00 monthly - rather than a licensing expense, this expense covers publicity for chat, the forums, and the site in general.
  • Forums: $45.00 every six months.  This license comes due every August and February.
  • Resource Locator: $50.00 yearly.  This comes due every September.
  • Email Delivery Service: $8.50 monthly.  This ensures that our emails show up in inboxes as opposed to spam folders, and provides us with extra insurance against emails being rejected outright as they were on our old server.

Hosting:

  • Server rental: $40.00 monthly.  This is a recent expense as of this writing; we were forced to move to a new server to allow site-generated emails to be sent once again.
  • Server security software: $90.00 yearly.  This comes due every October.  I'm sure you can understand why I don't want to name this software in a publicly visible place and give the evildoers of the internet any ideas on how to beat it.  This cost represents two individual pieces of software that protect us from hacker and spammer attacks - those evil-minded people have bots that test our servers and are successfully blocked up to around 400 times a day.

Miscellaneous:

  • Post Office box: $48.00 every six months.  This comes due every May and November.  (I'm sure you can understand why I don't want my home address plastered on the internet.)

Total Monthly Investment to Ensure Payment of All Bills: $125.67

Advertising:  If I'm able to contribute - or receive contributions that help me to contribute - more than that bare minimum, any funds held over will be used for advertising purposes.  We want to get the word out far and wide so we can help as many people as humanly possible.  Advertising campaigns will be launched any time we have $500.00 or more in funds not otherwise marked for payment of bills.

Those who wish to donate can do so here.

Recently, I asked for donations to help cover the summer licenses as well as convert the site to a new platform.  I'm pleased and very, very grateful to say that the generosity of the TransPulse community made possible everything I set out to do.  Incorporation and the subsequent registration as a non-profit organization is something that isn't in the cards at present, as the legal expenses, filing costs, and risk to those who would take places on the board is far across the line of what's tolerable.  This means that we can't issue tax deduction receipts for donations we receive at this time, which is why contributions from our members are doubly appreciated.

I'm immensely proud to be part of a community that looks after its own in the way this one does.  I'd like to offer my sincere thanks to all of you.  To those who have donated or will do so in the future, your gifts are treasured.  To those unable to give financially, know that the experience you bring to the community and the guidance you offer your fellow members is priceless.

Thanks Dev for the updates on what the current costs are, also on what you've got on your wish list! Very forward looking. I wish you all the best and hope that those able to do so, can spare a few $ frm time to time.

Since the site name change from Laura's Playground to TransgenderPulse we're finding that we aren't as visible on the internet as we used to be. What's needed is an advertising campaign. Since this tends to be on the expensive side and since we don't have the funds available, we would like to ask if any of our members would be willing to contribute toward this fund. Anything that you can give will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Is there a "donate" button somewhere?

You know, this is the third time I've posted introducing the idea of donating to the site, and also the third time I've forgotten to put in the link to the donation page.  Got that fixed now.

I am so horrible at asking for money. ;)

those evil-minded people have bots that test our servers and are successfully blocked up to around 400 times a day.

As I type this there are two of them attempting to register to this site. Imagine the havoc they could cause if they actually succeeded.  That's why it's critical that we have adequate security in place. I've seen over a hundred at any one time attempting to hack in. Our site wouldn't last five minutes if they were to succeed.

I've updated the list of expenses.  There's been a significant reduction in the overall monthly requirement.  While the licensing cost for the forums almost doubled every six months, I was able to negotiate a better price for our monthly server rental.  We can still use all the help we can get, especially as we prepare for January - both chat and forum licenses will come due then, to the tune of over $100.  Please give if you can.

I really like this place. So I donated $30. It is one time for now. How do you know who donates what?,  especially if it comes from another name that I hate hearing out loud. Lol.

Oh I don’t need recognition. I was just wondering. This site should almost run itself money wise. If monthly expense is really that low. It makes you wonder what donations are paying for on other sites. Lol I am happy to help.

Thanks, Nora!  I will admit I wondered who was behind that one, but it's often the case that people donate using legal names that they don't use when interacting on the forums.  The truth is, half the time I have no idea who's responsible for donations. ;)

I would gladly donate some funds to this great website! I'm just a little confused because on the browse tab there is not a spot for donate. I'm just a little confused on that because when I first signed up I did not notice an option to donate. I was wondering if Trans Pulse has any social medias to get the website out in the world. I think that would be key in drawing in some new members. I will spread the word! i'm happy to donate if it helps this website stay alive! Best of luck! :D

Lots of love,

I looked through the playlist and he has one a ways down specifically about HRT! Hopefully it's helpful.

Hi, my name is Tommy. I was born female but 2 months ago I decided to transition to male. I chose to transition without treatment and in a more natural way.

He sees me as a grandson and granddaughter.Plus he inspired me to enlist in the military,he saw I was going to the road to no where hanging around people I should never hanged  around. He is a veteran, served in the Army during WW2.Was proud of me when I enlisted in the Marines 21 years ago serving 10 years

I dont feel im conflicted about my gender. I think im just scared to show people who i am. I dont have a very good therapist who is trying to see what kind of surgeries i can get with the current insurance that i have. I always wanted to be a girl thats never going to change no matter how much i lie to myself.

The secret is out, at least to my friend! I could not dwell anymore on it.  I described my struggle to fit in. And suddenly I wrote the words. Whatever the response is I feel free!!  It really feels like the journey has begun, a new adventure even if it is hard. Maybe there is still a chance that Anna can be freed from her closet for real! At least I’ve told someone for the very first time   I am happy to be Anna.

Thank you! Ill be sure to watch this and see if it will help

I think many parents worry about the safety of HRT and other transition-related medical stuff. I don't have any HRT-related links right now, but there's a YouTuber named Chase Ross who made a series called Trans 101 that's good for sharing with family and friends who may not know much about trans issues. Here's the link to the video playlist:

So about a week ago I got a call from my insurance saying I was "approved" for surgery (which is good I'm assuming?) I have no idea how much they are covering, and they said they would send me a letter in the mail. Does anyone know what I should do at this point? I don't know if I should wait for the letter before calling the surgeon and scheduling. I know my insurance is not the best (United Healthcare), but I want to get this done ASAP. I guess I am just curious as to what other people had to go through with their insurance in order to get top surgery. If you have UHC and got top surgery covered any advice would be awesome! I am very nervous about all of this!

Hello All:   So I just want to ask and see if anyone might have any suggestions on body changes on hormones.  So I have been on hormones for 6 month where I was first on patches and then recently switched to injections and have been on injections for 8 weeks.  Right now my dysphoria has really been getting to me when I look in the mirror when I am male and I really hate it and wish that my body would just some how go fast on hormones.  I am following my Endocrongolist and doing my proscribe dose of hormones and when to take my hormones, but it is just really bothering me seeing me still as male.  I really want to be my identity that I identify as, but at the same time I am really trying to learn patience and just sit back and enjoy the ride.   Wanting to know if anyone else has felt the same way or know of ways to combat this feeling of hate looking at myself as male and just wanting my body to speed things up on hormones.   Look forward to hear back   Amy

I don't really know how well shes taking it anymore, she seems to mostly be trying to avoid the topic. I also found out that she has a problem with the idea of HRT, she's worried that its dangerous and I might end up with a tumor or something. I don't thing she understands it at all V_V
Does anyone have a good link I can give her to re-assure her its perfectly safe to give to her when  I'm ready to start taking that step?
    • Anna75
Wow! I look forward to the journey. Even if it is a hard one.  The wholeness of it all is my ultimate focus. Thanks Jani for your wonderful words about the journey!

Welcome Abby!! Congrats on coming out to your mom, even if it didn't go perfectly (it rarely does). Give her time. My wife had the same reaction. At first she was like "oh, that's it?" And she was super supportive the rest of that day. I think it's mostly the shock factor taking over. The next day she really had a hard time. Crying a ton. Not really understanding. But after a few days, I could tell that she was making peace with it. And now, almost two years later, we are happier than ever. Just don't lose faith that things can still work out. Take care!!!
    • ChickenLittle
I'm sorry she's having a harder time than you originally thought. When I first told my mom, she was so sweet and accepting but as the days went on I think she got more and more scared. After some time and some awkward/difficult conversations she's feeling much better. She can see how much happier I am since I began my transition and I think that's what really helped. I hope your mom is able to find some support and that she soon realizes that this is a positive change in your life. Don't give up hope!

I agree with you completely about the cost if I decide to go for it, Jani.  Not an area where you you want to compromise.

My real issue now is trying to judge the degree to which FFS will contribute to increased happiness and if that's worth the cost and the risks. I'm pretty sure I know what I want to do, but I need to be certain.

When we transition it is the whole body and mind.  A holistic approach as it were.  Focusing on one aspect is planning for an unsuccessful and unhappy transition.   As Vicky notes, generally speaking our sexuality does not change although sometime we have hidden or buried it so deep so not to be seen.  Once we are open and honest we see our true selves in totality.     Jani
