“The Iron Fortress”

“Oh, her walls are strong!

They hold against an assault

That would destroy a lesser hold!

 

Though a fury launch against her

From every quarter

Sought her destruction

Those battlements stand

 

Not even time or decay

Can bring her to ruin

 

She bears the brunt of the ages

And weathers the most furious of storms

And I reside safely within.

 

Yet, even so, such fortress

Is ever a prison as well

 

And I wither within her walls.

You know, in many ways there is much comfort in familiarity. These walls. I know them. They may be cold and grey. But I know them. I know the iron from which they are forged and to what ends they were designed to stand. Like an old friend, they remain true. 

 

Inside these walls I may struggle. But to any looking at the fortress, they see only strength and impenetrability. They see someone who has weathered a great deal but who remains upright and fighting. And they know what to expect from what they see.

 

They have stood a long time. And though I once might have, I no longer possess the strength of will or spirit to bring them down. I would not now ever gain what I feel I once might have should they crumble presently.  No, that would only leave me naked, ugly and vulnerable in the midst of a great ruin.

 

Yes, there is solace here. There is protection.  And even when it hurts, at least I already know and understand that pain. 

 

Familiarity.  I can live with this.
