HRT Testosterone Advice

Hey so I am a ftm transman living in western new york and I am trying to start T soon but I am struggling trying to find a therapist or psychiatrist to write me a letter. There is a gender therapist about hour out and I went to a couple sessions but I have to go to six for her to diagnose me, and her sessions cost 100 dollars each and dont accept insurance and I dont have that kind of money. I work full time and it is a struggle in itself I have tried calling offices near me but they havent given me straight answers about diagnosing me. I have heard you might be able to go to Planned Parenthood and are able to get diagnosed but I'm not sure? I have been out for around 5 years and I just moved out so I'm finally able to start my physical transition but I am just sort of lost and any advice would be much appreciated.

My advice would be to check out local FTM groups and ask for referrals. I'm also in Australia - Melbourne - and got T without seeing a psych or endo but only because I was able to find a peer-run TGD practice which has arrangements to bypass that stuff. If these systems exist in ye old backwater Australia, i'd be shocked if it was harder in NY.

 

Planned Parenthood I think does informed consent too - but others here are more informed about that than me - welcome to TP!

Good advice already. Sounds like the people you are dealing with are following the old standards. Many Drs are also uncomfortable wi th h prescribing T to anyone and will have an old copy of the standards th et y follow to the letter.

Google LGBT fri et ndle Drs in your state and check on Facebook for an FTM group in your state.

My Dr had to blouse her practice for financial reasons and I fo uou nd my new one by asking on my state FTM Facebook page. Not only do you get names but also  first hand accounts of what they are like.

I walked in to my new Dr and 15 min later walked out with a new prescription. Been like that for s couple of years since. He doesn't believe in making people jump through hoops. He's not an endo but there is no need in most cases. Only downside is that in this very rural sparsely populated state his office is a 7 hour round trip away. But it's only 2 times a year after the initial couple of visits. And so worth it.
