UK Pride or Trans friendly Events 2019

Recommended Posts

Hi, could anyone point me in the direction of a directory of any events coming up in the UK for 2019, I'm sure I saw something somewhere but can't find it again - is there a central resource that I can't find?

I want to try getting out in public as Dee this year my plan is to start small and build up if comfortable and my niece has said she would like to go to a Pride event where she is at university as something she would like to do, I can find that one and it looks like if I'm brave enough it is doable, but its got me thinking about other opportunities for days or small trips away and I simply have no clue where to start looking! :)

Trans Pride in Brighton looks fantastic. If I was in the UK, I'd definitely want to go. These sorts of events have been so rewarding to attend. I hope you have the same experience!

Thanks Sugar, I have a cousin that lives down that way - if I come out to her it would be an option, I know she will be fine with it. Brighton is the LGBTQ+ capital of the UK so it has a reputation to uphold! For me it is a safe area and a chance to actually socialise as myself, isolation is an issue where I am. Other than the parades what actually happens at them?

I can't speak to the Brighton one, but at the Pride events I've been to there's usually music and dancing, food, drinks, booths from merchants and trans supportive organizations. My favorite think is the people watching and the chance to feel truly accepted and not judged. Many times local clubs will have related events and after party types of things, too. It's especially fun if you can find a few friends to go together.

So more like festivals then? I know I would prefer to have company, and who knows by then I might do - but at the moment it would be me on my own. ?

Thanks Jojo, at the moment I have stayed away from FB as Dee - I would love to access the support group but FB is invasive and links and suggests too many things for me to trust it even if I made a separate profile to log in as.  I was hoping someone somewhere had listed all the different Prides etc in a central location so I could just pick and choose dates that work for me, no worries! ?

Yes!  I don't use it but I've read you would need to use a different computer (or phone) to access the site in order to avoid cross pollination!

There is one here in LIncoln. I don't know the dates for this year, but have just checked and come across this: http://www.lincolnpride.co.uk/about-us .

Personally I don't tend to go. I was caught up in the fringes last year though as I had a birthday party in town on the same weekend, and had arranged to meet some friends outside a pub. They were late so I was a bit of a bystander to the scene, mostly students.

Thanks Tracy, it looks like it was in September last year? Most of the parades I've seen tend to have a larger student contingent. Which is a good thing, they should always be the most publicly progressive part of our society!  I don't want to go to march necessarily, but to be in an openly safe environment and disappear in a crowd of others without standing out definitely appeals - plus, why not?

On our home calendar the party was on 29th September so that weekend. My party was just up the road from the nightclub which hosted the main evening event. I saw quite a queue outside as I was leaving the party to go home. These days, with the recently new university pretty much in the centre of town , there is a massive student influx. I did find it a bit spooky though, as I park uphill in free roadside parking. They switch the street lamps out between 23:00 and midnight on many outlying streets (cost cuts) so I was walking back to my car amongst students pretty much in darkness.

I wouldn't fancy walking in a crowd I don't know in the dark either Tracy!

It is not an exhaustive list - but I have found a list of some Pride ? places and 2019 dates on PinkUK.com

I have read some of it, mostly in areas specifically targeted at the LGBTQ+ peoples.   You also have to take into account what and who is behind the words, not just the words themselves. Together that creates context, right? Let's take some examples, under the Department of Health & Human Services section:   "Radical actors inside and outside government are promoting harmful identity politics that replaces biological sex with subjective notions of “gender identity” and bases a person’s worth on his or her race, sex, or other identities. This destructive dogma, under the guise of “equity,” threatens American’s fundamental liberties as well as the health and well-being of children and adults alike."   or   "Families comprised of a married mother, father, and their children are the foundation of a well-ordered nation and healthy society. Unfortunately, family policies and programs under President Biden’s HHS are fraught with agenda items focusing on “LGBTQ+ equity,” subsidizing single-motherhood, disincentivizing work, and penalizing marriage. These policies should be repealed and replaced by policies that support the formation of stable, married, nuclear families."   From a wording perspective, who doesn't want to protect the health and well-being of Americans or think that families aren't good for America? But let's take a look at the author, Roger Severino. He's well-quoted to be against LGBTQ+ anything, has standard christian nationalist views, supports conversion therapy, etc.   So when he uses words like "threatens the health and well-being of children and adults alike" it's not about actual health, it's about enforcing cis-gendered ideology because he (and the rest of the Heritage Foundation) believe LGBTQ+ people and communities are harmful. Or when he invokes the family through the lens of, let's just say dog whistles including the "penalization of marriage" (how and where?!), he idealizes families involving marriage of a "biological male to a biological female" and associates LGBTQ+ family equity as something unhealthy.   Who are the radical actors? Who is telling people to be trans, gay, or queer in general? No one. The idea that there can be any sort of equity between LGBTQ+ people and "normal" cis people is abhorrent to the author, so the loaded language of radical/destructive/guise/threaten are used. Families that he believes are "good" are stable/well-ordered/healthy, specifically married/nuclear ones.   Start looking into intersectionality of oppression of non-privileged groups and how that affects the concept of the family and you will understand that these platitudes are thinly veiled wrappers for christian nationalist ideology.   What's wrong with equity for queer families, to allow them full rights as parents, who are bringing up smart and able children? Or single mothers who are working three jobs to get food on plates?

Well yesterday didn't work like I wanted to. I met a guy and started talking and he was wanting to be in a relationship. I asked my kids on how they thought of me dating a man and they said gross and said no. I guess it's time to look for women. I think that is going to be harder. Oh well I guess.

This topic reminds me of the lyrics to the Beatles song, "A Little Help From My Friends."   "What do you see when you turn out the lights?"   "I can't tell you but I know it's mine."   Carolyn Marie

@Ivy have you read the actual document?   Has anyone else out there read it?
    • Abigail Genevieve
I am reading the Project 2025 document https://www.project2025.org/policy/   This will take some time.  I read the forward and I want to read it again later.   I read some criticism of it outside here and I will be looking for it in the light of what has been posted here and there.  Some of the criticism is bosh.   @MaeBe have you read the actual document?

      *older, not holder, oops :P
    • Abigail Genevieve
      No problem!

Old topic, but I gotta say my favorites are: "Stop hitting on minors" (doesn't work if you're holder tho) and "Sure as [squid] not you"
    • Carolyn Marie
Abigail, I think we will just leave the other posts where they are, and the discussion can start anew here.  It is possible to do what you ask, but would disrupt the flow of the discussion in the other thread, and would require more work than it's worth.   Carolyn Marie
