In your journey when did you have your therapist use your preferred name?

Recommended Posts

KymmieL

After reading the thread from Roadster about names. I wondered, When did others here have your therapist begin using your preferred name? A couple of times my therapist has asked. If I wanted to be addressed by my given name or another. Lately I have said my given name is OK for now.

So, that is the question, When in your journey did you have your therapist use your new preferred name?

always asked them to use my real name and not my dead name.

They better not make any mistake, lol I already had to endure them trying to figure out why i'm trans and putting the blame on every single member of my family. Them using my dead name would be the straw that brake the camel's back.

This is another one of those where it is up to you.  Using your "real name" is one way to establish comfort with the name and test your reaction to it.  I had used my name while I was CDing (my clueless days) and it felt good in public.  Therapists will be even willing to shift gears on your name during therapy depending on your mood or issues at the time.  I did have things that I needed to deal with in "him" mode in my mind, and the therapist I had asked me one day if I even could work better that day using my babyhood name, since the problem went back that far.   The suggestion was helpful and I cleared out some mental trash I would not have gotten to as easily with my male name or with Vicky.  There is no rule on when you have to start using your Real Name and so there is no gate keeper's checklist when "Used Preferred Name, advance to level (???)" happens.

Vicky, that is very interesting to me. I never thought about old issues being affected by name like that before, but it kind of makes sense in many ways. 🤔

My last therapist always used my now name. But I introduced myself that way from the beginning. I’m not sure she even knew my old name. Well maybe from my insurance card. Idk. But my new therapist does not know my old name. I am past that part of my transition.

I think it’s really however you are comfortable. It should be your decision. I am not sure how I’d feel if anyone used my old name at this point. It’s been months now since I’ve heard it really. Hmmmmm Kymmie, you really got me thinking today. 😜

It’s funny I cannot recall if I ever used my dead name with my therapist or not. I know that she referred to me with my name.

I know I did not start out going there presenting as female. I went on HRT before I was out publicly. I remember starting to go to therapy in female clothes and then changing out of them after. Then going full time and feeling a lot better.

My guess is I probably didn’t start using my name with her until I started going in presenting as female.

The one thing I know for sure was Dr. Eleanor Crisswell was a great therapist.

I personally would prefer my chosen name, I tried an intermediate name once but it felt wrong and it’s just a cop out to me. My old name has a lot of baggage attached to it. I’m still going to need to work through those things but my real name is a new source of empowerment, I chose it just for that reason.

I didn't at first even though she asked. I was a little embarrassed, I think. But after 1 or 2 sessions, I asked her if she'd switch and was glad I did. It felt good to hear someone using it!

I remember when my Therapist started to use my name.  It was on the first, my therapist knew my dead name when I first called her to talk to her and about setting up my first appt.  Then on the very first day I was in male mode and my Therapist asked what my name is and so I told her Amy LeBlanc but I had yet to come up with a middle name.  She asked me if it was alright to call me Amy, and every time I went to see my therapist, she has always called me Amy.  It was not till my 3rd session is when I started to dress as myself well before the HRT.  Then every time I saw my therapist, I was dressing more and more female like and was living part time.

So since my very first session with my therapist, she has used my name

I was asked this last session and decided to continue that session with my birth name, it seemed odd to switch over halfway through the session, for me being able to express myself genuinely is a big part of why I'm seeing her. I do not want Dee to just be another mask I put on because I think it is expected.  It feels like I am working towards it though as it makes me feel nice to be recognised as her and not him. X

A powerful insight in that statement!!

It is in line with what  I was mentioning up above.

I told my Therapist very early on but other than to record it, he has never mentioned it.  I only use it here and with a support group that I am joining.

When I started therapy over 6 months ago, my therapist asked what my preferred pronouns and name were, but I hadn't chosen a name at that point, and was very much in questioning mode, so I went with my birth name and pronouns. Now I think I'm slowly approaching the time to make a change.

This forum is the only place I've used my chosen name, but as time goes on it feels more and more uncomfortable to hear my given name. Times like when I am ordering a coffee and they ask for my name, it's getting harder and harder to say my birth name. It just feels really weird. The few times I've used my chosen name in those sorts of situations, it felt really good, but I also felt a bit of a fraud, like who would believe that was really my name. Guess I still have some work to do, but I'm hoping to grow into my new name someday.

From the first day we used my name. The legal name is on the paperwork, and I am working on getting it legally changed.

I had been living full time about a year when I started therapy and using my name as much as possible there are things that require my legal name.

I don’t yet have a therapist, hopefully soon. I did come out to my GP recently, so that she could help me find a therapist and to discuss HRT. She asked me right away what pronouns to use. I stuck with my birth name and pronouns, as I am a long way from out and presenting. I think once I start to look and feel more me on the outside, I’ll be ready to switch.

Thank you all for the insight on name use. I may just start using my real name. I know that the first day that I came out and met with my other counselor. She asked right away if I wanted to use my given name or not. I think then it kind of weirded me out, at that moment. As I have seen my counselors it is getting to the point that maybe it is time for the next step.

It is kind of like when I got registered with the KS VA. the lady asked me. The sex I identified as. Of course I said Female.

My goodness, thank you girls, I agree, I have definitely had an epiphany moment here. The guilt and shame kept me from achieving my goals for so many years, and then more recently kept me from doing the things that needed to be done in order for my life to move forward. It is as if I had just broken the starting tape at the beginning of the race, why I waited so long to do that I’ll never know, but it doesn’t really matter since I’m on my way now. I just don’t have the ability to hold onto all of the hurt feelings and negativeness of holding grudges, it weighs one down, burns them slowly and I don’t need the scars and extra baggage. When my closest sibling just recently ostracized me I immediately sat there with my friend and asked if we could pray about it, I asked that the feelings of negative frustration be lifted from me and that I could find the capacity to forgive and forget, I immediately felt better and Truly forgive my family for their bad behavior. I find I can’t control others nor do I want to, and when they receive me back I’ll be happy to be back in the fold. In the back of my mind I make snarky comments, but I would never do so in person. So much needs to be done, four surgeries coming now,  maybe five if I save enough money.  The first surgery is vocal, a good friend of mine finished hers a couple months back and it was glorious so I’m going to the same surgeon   The second surgery is breast augmentation, that will be happening on May 8th... The third surgery will be FFS and it’s less than a year away depending on current scheduling. I will be going in for forehead reconstruction, hairline drop, brow lift, lip lift, lipo cheek augmentation and lip volume Augmentation... The fourth surgery will be bottom surgery, but it will need to be several months after FFS so I am healed up nicely before I go back under the knife.  And the final surgery should I choose to do so, and I probably will, would be lipo augmentation for my hips and rear end, I know it’s totally unnecessary but this is something that is very important in my mind. It’s entirely likely I will get through the fourth surgery and be sick of the knife, and may feel differently about the importance of my hips and rear end, but every time I think I’m over the idea of it, it comes back to haunt me when I see some girl walk past me at the cheesecake factory With wide curvy hips and a tail to match... My current frame seems to want to support this, it’s trying it’s best to do what I want, I will just have to see how much HRT gives me in that department, it’s possible I will achieve some of my goal but sadly I don’t believe my rear end is going to do anything on its own.  I know I’m going to get lots of comments about that last surgery, and everyone’s opinion is valid, so don’t feel shy about voicing your opinion. I’m truly excited for my future, there’s a lot of hard work to be done for certain, but I’ve been under the knife many times before for some truly horrendous surgeries. I died three times in the process and went through years of recovery, so my current scheduled surgeries seem like a cakewalk in comparison.  Hugs, hugs and more hugs,  Jackie

Clearly myopic! My other"friend" that I thought was accepting me flat out told me, "I'm not calling you Michelle! I'll call you Mikey! I'm too old to relearn your name!" Then he laughed...   Not sure how to take that...😔

I think we all have times of looking at life more as a chore than as a joy.  I know i have those times.  I've found that it is easier to get through them if i share.  I've also learned that if think of things i'm grateful for rather than my disappointments my mood does improve.  i read one story recently about a woman who does the alphabet thing of things to be grateful for for each letter.   A......animals, alive,  B......butter, bread, bright  etc.  It's harder than it seems but seems to brighten my day.   Big Hugs,   Charlize

I  weighed myself several times over the course of last night and this morning. For a change seems to be more steady in its estimate after I finally managed to get it to properly calibrate itself. Also there are four sensors on it so if you are not dead center it can cause the weight to be lower then centered which I think caused it to inaccurate. The odd pattern on it appears to be a indicator for where to put the heel of your foot. So while still just an estimate because it’s not a beam scale. I am tempted to get one but I don’t really need that level of accuracy. I just need something that will be consistent to help me track trends so I can respond accordingly.   This log while I build confidence in the scale shows the fluctuations of weight in the day. All I’m looking for here is did it go up when I eat and drink and does it come down over time but not so much where it is a fairy tale. It matches the changes over time that I have come to expect.   1700 hours: 200 pounds (whatever gain from lunch was left plus three bottles of water through the day)
1800 hours: 201.1 pounds (dinner and a bottle of water)
2200 hours: 200.2 pounds (going to bed)
0630 hours: 198.6 pounds (getting ready for work)   So my weigh in has broken past the 199 barrier. This makes my weight loss in the last seven days ~4.4 pounds.   Yesterday I burned 3421 calories and ingested 1502 calories and drank 40 Oz of water. To burn the calories I jogged 4 miles and walked an additional 4.4 miles.

Hi Ladies,  my name is Janet and I have been reading post and topics for the past week on here and have just recently joined.   I have been CD on and off since I was a young adult and when I was married I buried deep.  Up to here recently since I am disabled and divorced has the desire come back to dress once again.    The relieve part is I can dress fully and don’t worry about being caught by anyone. But the guilts or confused part is.    I have went and bought gaffs, breast forms and etc. i really don’t have no desire to get up in the morning in man mode. I get up shower , shave and dress full female mode.  If I got to go out running errands it still female under garments because I have yet to go out full female attire.      Just had to get this off my mind because the desire to be full female 100% and not male is concerning.    Thanks for the opportunity to let this out   Janet

Thank you. Because you like them here are some more. These pieces are to show courage. In the first one I chose pink because I wanted to show she was fighting for love.    Second piece she has a pink wolf. A wolf is suppose to be a vicious animal but when tamed my love it becomes a girl’s best friend.    Last piece I chose blue and red (red is my favorite color) Blue is for male and red is for female. The two are mixed but present together bring about harmony and strength.   I can’t take credit for the picture but I was the one who colored it. Enjoy!    Love   Tessa👩‍🦳

That's true, thanks.  I think I'll give them a call, but am hoping it'll be OK to shave sooner rather than later. 😂
    • jo_g
Great news! Super happy for you.

Hi Jo-g, I will add everyones experience with laser and electrolysis is a bit different. I went through laser without lidocaine,. But for electrolysis I needed it since it took for ever. I did not worry about my body hair, as with HRT it turnedo ut less than most cis girls.   In regards to the not shaving, I was not told that in regards to laser for myself. But I can see they might have a reason for it. From not irritating the skin, to seeing how effective the treatment is. Your technician may also be worried about scarring. But in the end asking them about will tell you more, as they might also be trying to gauge the effectiveness of things.
    • SaraAW
Naomi, I feel your pain. No matter how many different directions I shave in, I have a permanent very dark shadow. Within a couple of hours, you can use my face like coarse sand paper.  I’m torn between starting laser or electrolysis. Most of my hair is still really dark, with just a few patches of gray.    As for body hair, shaving or even using depilatories leaves me with insane ingrown hairs. I’ve actually started plucking chest hair to help with the GD, but it takes for ever. I might try waxing.    I wish you all luck in the quest for smooth hair free skin.    *hugs*

A second hand makeup manual that I picked up some time ago suggests that liquids like mascara and liquid foundation are good for about 6 months, while pressed powders and the like should be good for up to 2 years with proper storage (though it bears frequently checking their viability during that time).

      They look great. Well done!
