Non-binary Bathing Suits

Recommended Posts

Hi friends,

The time is soon upon us where everyone in NJ will head to the shore! That's right, this'll be my first summer since coming out as non-binary. I've already started wondering -- and getting very nervous -- about what to do. Googling "gender-neutral bathing suits" just brings up a lot of gendered options, but that won't cut it for me.

What do y'all wear?

Thanks,

m

This will be fun to hear, but do remember the rules about bathing suit pictures here.

Origami customs has some non binary options for swimwear. I’m pretty sure that they are the only company that even has thought of making swimsuits like that.

Hey M,

this is a tricky one! Bathing suits are often so overtly gendered. ?

I usually wear boxer-brief type trunks underneath boardshorts, with a sports bra for support (provides decent compression as well) and a rash top.

I think boardshorts are a pretty good gender-neutral option (they are generally marketed towards males and females). The length of the shorts will determine if it appears more femme or more masc. Maybe you could go for mid-length to long shorts with a femme design (eg. floral) to try to get a gender balance. It really depends what type of clothing/style you like and what you'll feel comfortable in!

Also remeber clothing doesn't define you. You could wear a bikini or just speedos and still be non-binary. ;) ..it's all up to you and your comfort (and i get that wearing something so gendered may make you uncomfortable, so if you dont want to thats makes sense). :)

haha, I'm going to have a look online and try to find a cute nb outfit for swimming now! :D I'll post pics if I find something nice. ;)

I've had a bit of a look, haven't found any amazinggg outfits but "Outplay" makes swimwear that isn't particularly gendered.

Buzzfeed also has an article about gender neutral swimwear options which might help give you some ideas for some different possible styles. https://www.buzzfeed.com/shannonkeating/queers-at-the-beach

Let me know what you think!

In some respects I find this difficult as people general ly try to categorise someone as male or female. It does make it difficult to work.

As a bit of an aside on the same subject, it is interesting to look at photos of 1920's, and that sort of era, swimwear style as some is interesting from the gender point of view. Sexually both sexes were a bit 'played down' giving less gender clues.

Last summer, I wore a pair of compression shorts and a tank-top over a one-piece swimsuit, and that worked okay for me. It wasn't perfect, but it did the job. It didn't make me too dysphoric, unless I took the tank off. I'm hoping to pick up a rashguard tank and swim trunks for this summer. The buzzfeed article Alex linked above was really nice too.

hey M. I been realllllly nervous about this issues. I live in So-Cal and all Trans girls I know or see look like models and most of then wear a two piece with cut-off short  and cute sleeveless t-shirt...I CANT DO THAT...and I don't look like a model..i was think of wearing just one piece with cute-off short..but I am a bit afraid..The Buzz feed Art was not to helpful for me, but it did have soon nice choices..Good Luck

I went with board shorts and a short sleeve rash guard last year. Cute, feminine, and full coverage. Makes tucking easy and it honestly helped me feel less in the spotlight. Although this year I’m definitely swapping my top to a bikini. Shorts will be needed at least 1 more year. Or a skirt bottom.

I've worn a skirt bottom with a matching top from Lands End.

Perhaps not non binary but then again i'm a trans woman.....

I realize this thread is old, but it's summmmmertiiimmme! (Well, it's almost always summertime where I live.) I recently got this suit from Amazon and liked it so much, I got it in a 2nd color. I am afab enby and my swimsuit wishes are: minimize the need to apply so much sunscreen, deaccentuate chest but cannot stand anything tight around the chest, eliminate the need for excessive "bikini area" grooming, don't mind showing off the booty. This suit fit the bill for me. The rash guard top has a built-in shelf bra which is loose, but just substantial enough to keep things in check. The boy shorts are flattering, and just long enough so that I don't need to risk inducing dysphoria by removing hair. The model in this picture appears feminine, so you have to use your imagination a bit to envision this on a person who leans more androgynous.

I like that outfit a lot, and that was my thought of the best compromise too....a rash guard top and short (but not bikini/speedo) bottom. I also agree with Tracy....a century ago, swimsuit styles had much more coverage and had fewer gender cues, and it's very interesting to look back at that.

While I won't be going out in public this summer, I hope to by next summer, and while at this point we are fortunate to be able to wear either a bikini or men's swim trunks and look OK either way, we don't FEEL comfortable either way, and with HRT that may change the ability to go in full male presentation. Plus we are significantly balding and I use a wig, so I'm not sure how that'll all work. I've wondered if our lap swimming days are over, but at least we could look alright on the beach or wading!

We have been asked to post this study.   I'm an undergraduate university student in my third year completing a BSc in Anthropology. I'm working on my dissertation, looking at languages with grammatical gender (e.g. languages like Italian and Spanish, nouns are either masculine or feminine). I'm curious if this affects/bothers people with gender identities outside the typical binary of male and female, like non-binary or transgender identities. Using this forum, I would be very grateful if anyone could answer the 5 questions I have put together in a Google form, they are open-ended questions, and you can be as brief or detailed as you want/comfortable with! All responses will also be kept anonymous. As you can probably guess, I came to online forums because finding participants in person is difficult. Talking about gender identities, I understand, can be very personal, so this online anonymised format can be safer. :) If anyone is also particularly interested in this topic, it would be awesome to message one-on-one and do the Google form survey. Having one and one interviews would also be good research! But NONE of this is compulsory, and only if anyone is interested and doesn't mind helping me out and can do so. @Mia MarieI found this    Here are critical resources to help transgender seniors face the challenges of growing older - LGBTQ Nation   As far as financial aid I came up empty. :( I'm sorry. I can only imagine what you are going through.

@Adrianna Daniellecongratulations to you and your boyfriend! Hopefully a future wedding in the future!   @WillowI'm sorry about that he passed away. He sounded like a role model that others should follow.   @MmindyI'm sorry about your head cold! Hopefully it won't last too long and hope for good rest and recovery.

I see more and more postings with what the LGBTQ support organizations are doing and I see less and less about helping the older generation of us. All I really see is them wanting to help transgender youths and no matter how many times I ask for help, they tell me they can't help or they tell me the office I contacted only works with the youth only. Is there an organization that helps older transgender people? All I find when I do a search turns out with nothing more than talking about trans youths. I feel as though us older trasn folks are being left out. I applied for financial help in a form of a grant, twice, and was turned down with no explanations of why. They did ask me to help go over applications which told me I was automatically denied. Really doesn't seem fair, does it?

Require students to use bathrooms that align with the gender they were assigned at birth Prohibit transgender girls in seventh grade or older from participating in girls sports or other girls-only activities  Ban gender-affirming health care — including surgery or hormone treatment — for transgender students under age 18, even if parents consent or the treatment is recommended by a doctor Require schools to notify parents if students change their pronouns or otherwise signal they identify as a gender other than what’s on their official student records Doesn't look like it "protects" anybody.  It actually is about restricting trans kids rights.   The ways politicians name their bills etc. is a farce.  Most of the time they do the opposite of what they're called.

There's a lot of bad information out there.  People like the sensational stuff, whether it's true or not.   Too many people live in a news/opinion bubble.  My ex's late husband kept Fox News on 24/7.  It was always there in the background of their life.  There is something about "trans" stuff every day, and always negative.

Good morning everyone,   Head Cold and body aches are reduced today. @April Marie I'm glad you're feeling better too. Good luck timing the lawn care with the weather. @Willow It's good to hear that your wife is on the mend, and you may make it to Salt Lake City. I'm sadden to here about Tattoo Tom.   This is very good news @Adrianna Danielle   @Ashley0616 I hope you find the right hair removal service in a convenient location.   I'm on my second cup of coffee, and we're expecting rain this afternoon and evening.   Hugs,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Well, I can not say good morning today.  The world has lost a loving, caring man that gave his all for others that are suffering.  I do not have details, however Tattoo Tom of Stillbrave Childhood Cancer Organization has gone on to be with his daughter Shala and my Granddaughter Daphne and all the other kids with cancer and their families he tried to help.  You can Google the organization and it will tell you his story and what they do.  He used to run in Ultra marathons to raise money.  He was scheduled to run in the Moab 240 later this year.  Each mile is dedicated to a child.  You can see Daphne’s story on mile 233 and Shala is always the last mile.     if you have a few dollars to spare please make a donation.  The work of 5he organization will continue but it will not be the same without Tom.   Well on a better note, I learned last night that I can attend the Salt Lake City gathering of the Presbyterian Church USA in Salt Lake City. As a guest of our minister.  If I can get there I am going to try to go.  I am just waiting to hear from my son to learn if there are blackout days around the date I need to be there.  And I realize the bigger issue could be getting home so I do have th weigh the risk against the opportunity.   Thank you all for your concerns and prayers regarding my wife’s recent back surgery and my concerns about my voice.  My wife is definitely on the mend.   well I guess I need to get a move on it is later that I realized.   Willow
