Dyeing hair for the first time

Lucca

Recommended Posts

I have natural brown hair that's just a couple inches past shoulder length, I want to get it died black with purple or blue ends. However, I've spent nearly two years growing it out from a buzz cut, and I'm terrified of doing something to it that damages it, or that is impossible to reverse if I don't like it. I want to do black with colored ends because that way most of the hair doesn't need to get bleached and risk getting damaged. However, black dye also stays on the hair for a very long time, to my knowledge, and is also hard to remove, and I'm not sure about how the brown roots would look. Anyone here dyed their entire hair before? How did it turn out?

If you get it done professionally you probable will be all right concerning damage but in order to remove dye they have to strip the color out which my stylist says is damaging.  So choose wisely!   I've gone from silver to blonde with a hint of red.  I like it.  My stylist only does the root area now every 5 weeks and adds highlights to give it some depth.

If you wash your hair frequently the color will not last as long, but still quite long.  Your roots will show but thats the price you pay.

OMG, there's a girl at the gym who went black with blue tips. She looks amazing. Sweet ink on her arms too. I'd say, "I might be jealous," but I know darn well that I am.

I'd have it done professionally the first time (at least, especially if I was worried about damaging it). Before I went in, I'd also take a picture of myself and run it through a hair color app. Then I could use that as a preview to see if I really liked it.

Hugs!

Oh, I'm definitely having this done professionally, not doing it myself.

If I wanted to go back to brown hair, could I have the black hair dyed brown, rather than removing the dye or waiting for it to come off? Or is that impossible because the dye is so dark?

First is to go into a salon and find a colorist you can like or trust at least.  Various hair color lines train beauticians in the uses of their products.  My colorist has been certified by Redken Products, and I have had good results from a Paul Mitchell trainee.  Let the stylist give you an opinion about your hair specifically. and keep coming back to them.  My stylist has been doing my hair for nearly 8 years.

I have a custom red color that my stylist has mixed up for me, and she does my (dirty grey, but once strawberry blond) roots with a heavier color and refreshes the ends with a lighter red concoction every 5 weeks.  If you go too dark, you will probably have to have it color stripped.  There are conditioning treatments that can be used at the time of the stripping and recoloring but you are looking at a significant amount of money there.  For the bright colors I do go with extensions or wigs.

I might just try dying the tips and leaving the rest natural for the first time. As much as I want to go full black, I'm just super nervous about commitment.

Brown with black tips could be cool. Kind of different without being too edgy. I demand pictures though. I want to see how it comes out.

After more consideration and looking at altered photos, I'm not so sure about black hair anymore. I'm not sure it'll look good with my skin, and if I don't like it, it's not going away without significant damage to my hair or cutting it off.

That being the case, I'm wondering what will compliment my dark brown hair if I leave the bulk of it natural, and I was thinking of maybe getting a white or light blond streak? Kind of like this this girl, but not as much white to start with. I usually wear my hair in a ponytail, I like the idea of a bold platinum blonde streak going across my head and into a ponytail. If I don't like it, I can easily dye it brown like the rest, and it still won't be a whole lot of my hair if it gets too damaged.

Better yet, go into a beauty supply store that has clip in hair extensions, (the same type of store that sells the dye) and buy one or two colors of the cheapest ones to try out, and then you will do even less than the damage even dye would.  The extensions are fun to use and do not cost much in synthetic hair types. https://www.sallybeauty.com/color-strip-clip-in-hair-extension/HAIRDO2.html   I buy things at Sally Beauty supply but other places have them too.

4 months doesn’t seem such a long time now compared to the times I was previously looking at! 🙂   Many thanks to @Karen Careyfor pointing me towards GenderCare, they have been nothing but helpful and professional, and I wouldn’t be where I am now without them.

Love is a mix of feelings and actions that shows a deep liking for someone or something. Love involves caring for another. Romantic love can lead to things such as dating, marriage and sex, but a person can also feel for friends, such as platonic love, or family. There are also chemical reactions within the brain that can be triggered by the different types of love.

Good morning, everyone!! I'm still battling the Worst Head Cold Ever. Just when I think I've turned the corner, it smacks me back down. If you've got stock in tissues, I'm driving up your profits.   Our early Spring has the grass growing quickly. I need to get out today and cut it before it grows over the house. Today is supposed to be sunny and mid-60s so I'll suck up not feeling great and get the mowers out. At least I'll be in the sunshine for a few hours. The next few days are supposed to be rainy so it's today or wait until the weekend.   Time for a second cup of coffee!!   Stay safe and enjoy this beautiful day we've been given!!

Welcome Mattie.  When i got here i was at a point bin my journey when i was discovering my path.  Writing about it and reading about others helped me greatly as did gender therapy.  Perhaps the hardest thing was finding self acceptance without feeling guilt at simply being me. Enjoy your time here.  You are not alone.   Hugs,   Charlize

I picked a cancellation spot with Dr Lorimer yesterday and had my consultation a month early.  I had been worried about how it would go, but the process of exchanging information was nothing to worry about and I felt quite at ease throughout.  That’s not to say some parts weren’t challenging to articulate clearly, but Dr Lorimer’s manner helped enormously.   The GI/GD diagnosis was such a welcome conclusion to it all, and such an important milestone in my journey.   Now for the Endo consult waiting…

This one is NOT over, and this is not a final final ruling on the matter since this was a procedural and not substantive ruling based on scientific evidence.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/supreme-court-allows-enforcement-idaho-ban-gender-affirming-care-trans-rcna141209     6-3 decision, of course.  The conservative Justices really don't give a damn who gets hurt, as long as it's "just" trans kids.  This is what we can expect, going forward.    Carolyn Marie

I am on a three month review cycle for dosage. Do you have a plan with your doctor? I didn't discuss overall strategy when I got my prescription, it was a very long appointment. I was able to ask via web message to get a better idea; we'll check blood every 3 months and titrate accordingly. I don't know if we'll change labs to 6mo after a year or not, but that's where I'm at now. I, too, was like "is this enough?" at the start. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't, but I've seen positive results during the months at a lower dose and continue to notice changes. For instance, my skin sensitivity is much higher. I always wondered why my wife was so ticklish, but I'm starting to understand why. I'll bet I am 20-40% more sensitive to touch than I was before; gently tickling my arm (I would wake up doing this sometimes, up and down my arms) now makes my fingers tingle...in a good way. :)
