Do you keep a journal of your journey?

I have been told this is a good thing to do especially when you are feeling down or stressed or worse.  I want to do this but honestly I am to lazy.  Plus I write down just about everything here at TP and get real time feed back on issues, questions, and feelings of confusion.  

So I do write down things both positive and negative concerning my journey.

I suppose years from now it would be nice to have all this that I write here compiled into one file or notebook.  

But the therapy of writing your feelings and thoughts down are stratified for me here.

Yup, ShawnaLeigh I write here: https://ironicissues.wordpress.com/ every week, plus I blog on this site too when something's just on my mind. It is good to be able to read back over how you were feeling and what you thought about it. Some posts are longer than others but it can be about different topics, it is easy to find and some folks comment and help by offering a different perspective or encouragement. Forums for me are more about Q & A, but really just do what works for you.

Kind of? I keep my therapist appraised by e-mail and when I'm feeling especially stressed, I'll post on my MeWe site or write it in my physical journal in red sparkle-ink. Sometimes I'll write in the margins of my workout journal. I was keeping a more detailed record earlier in my transition, but that kind of fell by the wayside.

 

Of course I'll bitch here when something comes up that I think would be funny or informative to share. Also, when I need to vent about something. Like hot flashes. Which suck.

Do you keep a journal of your journey?
 

Sadly, I have never been good about keeping a journal or diary.  I always worried growing up about it getting into the wrong hands.  After I came out to family last April and May, I sent my family updates every few weeks or if there was a milestone worth reporting.  This is the closest thing I have to a log of changes in my transition journey.  I do have several posts here on TP that detail some of my earlier journey.  I wish I had started a blog similar to DeeDee’s which is always a very good read, by the way.

After an soon-to-be-ex-wife went through dozens of volumes of my private journals - most of which predated our relationship - and began berating me about what i wrote, I burned them all. Have not kept a functional journal since, although I have tried many times to get started again. I have at least 5 bound journals with only the first 4 or 5 pages used, the rest blank.

I doubt I'll ever be able to journal again, no matter how hard I try.

I have started a journal within the past week, it's helping me sort through a lot of complex emotions and thoughts. Sometimes I get overly fixated on a single thought and writing it down seems to help.

Yes, I actually do! I don't write in it daily, but whenever something important happens, I always add to my voice diary of my laptop. That way, I will also be able to hear the progression of my voice over time. For now, I can gladly say that months of training my voice has definitely lowered it quite a bit, and while it might not be exactly what I want, you can't knock progress! It is also more helpful than writing because you just set a time limit and say whatever comes to mind. Hearing your own voice really gives you a better feeling of exactly what you were going through in that moment, and a clearer picture in the whole. I have started crying before, and that raw emotion while you are talking with just yourself and the microphone is something that you can really look back on. It can be a tad more stressful, sure, but I find that there is much less pressure as you are just doing and saying whatever you want.

That is so awful @TammyAnne... I'm so sorry you have gone through such trauma. I hope one day you will be able to heal enough to stay a journal again.

This is truly an awful thing for someone to do.  I’m so sorry you had to go threw that.  😢

 

I have wanted to do this all my life but something always holds me back from doing it. Perhaps my ingrained sense of need to hide everything about the person I was inside was so strong that I just couldn’t “confess” this even in written words.  
Then there was the ever present fear of having someone read it, or worse, like what happened to TammyAnne.  I honestly do not know how much of a negative impact that would of had on me.  
These days I’m out.  Not to the world but to most everyone I care about so these fears don’t control me any longer.  
Why do I still resist?

Ugh. That should have been a huge red flag. Who DOES that? Those were private. We do not snoop through our partner's private things without permission. I'm so very sorry you had to endure that breach of trust @TammyAnne.

I love voice training! Resonance is more important than pitch though. Testosterone will help you with pitch, resonance is more about speaking low through your chest. Girls speak more from the upper middle parts of their throat and project through their mask (face). Guys talk out of the lower part of their throat and resonate in their chests. Well worth every second I put into it.

My wife suggested I keep a journal shortly after I came out to her.  I can't claim any real diligence in my journaling, but I try to write something at least once a week.  If I could transmit thouhts about what I'd like to write directly to  my journal, I'd probably have several volumes by now.  Raising two young children while being the family caregiver leaves me thinking about writing far more often than I actually have time for.

 

@TammyAnne, I am so sorry to hear that.  It breaks my heart to think of such a violation...

      I was at a low point. Having just separated from my wife of twenty five years. "When I look in your eyes...I don't see you anymore." Is what she told me before I left. I got in the car and drove. I don't know how many hundreds of miles I'd gone before I stopped at a dollar store and bought a bag of ice and a fillet knife. I drove to the next rest stop on the highway. I walked in the empty ladies room carrying the items that  I'd  purchased and entered a bathroom stall. I remember hiking up my dress and grabbing a handful of my manhood before I lifted the knife up over my head. "What am I...crazy?!!" I thought before I broke down crying and ran out the door. The nightwatchman saw me as I got in my car. He came over and knocked on the window. "Are you OK, Lady?" He asked with a look of worry and concern on his face. "I'm alright." I replied through tears before I asked where the nearest emergency hospital was. When I got to the hospital the intake person accidentally put I pink identification band on my wrist. I was taken behind a curtain to disrobe and put on a patient gown. Then she handed me a piss cup and sent me to a bathroom. For a drug test I figured. Afterwards I laid down on a table to be examined. I fell asleep. The next thing I knew a nurse woke me up and replaced my wrist band with a blue one. "I'm apologize for the mistake, Sir." She said "But we really thought you were female." I smiled. "Don't worry. It happens to me all the time." Later I talked to a psychologist and was given a prescription for an anti-depressant that I had no intention of filling. I hate pills. Somehow just talking to somebody is what made the most difference. What's the point here? When you are feeling overwhelmed by the circumstances of life, before you do something foolish that you'll later regret, STOP and TALK TO SOMEONE! Be safe. Be Smart.

      I'm old school. When I introduce myself to someone for the first time I extend a friendly and firm handshake. "Hello." I say. "It's a pleasure to meet you. My name is Donnie." I don't change my voice. I'm not trying to fool anybody into believing I'm something that I'm not. I want them to know up front exactly who I am. Often people ask my which surname I want them to use when addressing me. " Frankly." I tell them. "I don't really care. Use whatever you feel comfortable using."  I'm 58 years old I don't have the time to spend correcting everybody over little things like surnames. I don't need the affirmation. I already know who and what I am. I'm preoperative transgender. (That means I've still got junk down there.) I don't use the ladies room. In my opinion that would be disrespectful and wrong. (That's just my opinion.) I can handle myself fine. I spent the winter at a homeless shelter for Men. You should have seen the looks I got when I checked in. "This is a men's shelter! You shouldn't be here!" Was the line I heard every time I walked in the door. My first night sleeping on a mat on the floor with a hairy drunk with vodka on his breath putting his ar.ms around me. So I kneed him in the nuts. I survived. But, thank goodness, I'm out of that place! I do go back from time to time to visit with some of the people I know who are still there. I hand out cigarettes and gum. I wish I could do more to help. They are like family to me. Speaking of family: I have three children. Two girls and a boy. They are all grown upbla now. They are OK with me but sometimes I wonder. I put them through hell. It wasn't easy for them growing up with a father that is transitioning before their eyes. My wife and I have been separated for many years. She stuck around as long as she could. It wasn't easy on her either. I work as a certified Nursing Assistant at a local Nursing Home. A job that I love. I love to go ice skating or rollerblading. If you live in Omaha you might see me skating down at the AmeriTrade Center. What do I want to get out of this forum? I don't really know just now. I'll figure that out later.

      Did get a surprise at church this morning,seen a teacher I had in high school.She was surprised I changed big time at first and was glad I live a happy life now as a post op MTF.Did call me Debra too after Telling her I go by Debra now.She was my biggest inspiration in my life in high school and did thank her as well.Did see I did struggle in life before I transitioned knowing I was born the wrong gender.

      I really didn't used to think about eating much. Sometimes I'd totally forget. I'm 6' 1'' tall. Currently I tip the scales at 179 lbs.So I guess I'm doing better than I used to. It's OK to be a little fluffy. My lowest weight was 129 lbs but that was during my cross country bicycling days.  I only ate high energy bars and drank a lot of water back then.  I'd faint from the lack of calories. Regaining consciousness laying on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere is certainly a wake up call that I should take better care of myself. My advice to you is remember to eat. Your body needs the energy for what you are going through. Stay healthy, Kiddo. Stay Safe. Be smart.

      Totally agree with the others, and I also can identify and empathize with your desire to leave all the explaining to others.  I, too, want to just get on with living my life.  I did the advocacy thing for several years, and loved it.  It brought a lot of meaning and purpose to my life, and I did a lot of good.  But I'm taking some steps back from all that.  Time to just be me.  So yes, I get you.  Do whatever feels most comfortable, Bunny.  Explain when you must, be otherwise, just enjoy life.   Carolyn Marie

      There is nothing wrong with holding on to the finest bit of hope.  You never know until it’s a done deal and even then.   If my wife had a change of heart I’m not sure I could go back to what we had.  Things would have to change.

      The "ordinary" is what we really are aiming for in transition.  When we first begin our transitioned lives, there is novelty to it for ourselves and others around us.  Only 16% of people down south in the U.S. have knowingly met a Trans person so there is some healthy and actually caring curiosity about it.  If it is a person you have known a long time, as tired as you may be, it may be worth the time to tell them, but you have no obligation to do that as said above.    I am a bit on the other side, since I do actually give training classes on dealing with Trans people to groups who need the information. Doing deliberate and out training is different from having to justify yourself daily.  You do not have to justify yourself, you just do not!  Put that feeling aside!  In fact BURY that feeling which I have actually done.  You look fine and acceptable as a female in that picture which may be better than l look, but I am a bit older too.

      Dreary rainy day here as I finish my coffee. Days like this tend to depress most people. For myself, it pushes my "art" buttons. So something creative will happen today. Although I've often wondered if the dreary grey days trigger art production in me because when I do creative work, it's usually to the tune of 1500+ plus watts of intensely focused light. In other words "light therapy"?? At any rate, heres to you all, make some lemonade if you've got lemons, or sunshine if you've got dreary! 《《《 great big hug 》》》 TA

      I know that hole your in oh  so well.  It may seem like things will never get better.  I've been there so many times.  It sucks.   A lot of good advice has been given before me, but I am going to add to it.  What made a difference in my life is an attitude of gratitude.  I know that might seem silly where you're at, but please, read what I have to say.\   I grew up the child of a mother with narcissistic personality disorder.  She constantly played people against each other, and often treated me as defective.  She bad-mouthed my dad to me behind his back (not without cause), in order to feed her sense of superior self-worth.  She could sit in a busy shopping mall and name other people's character flaws as they walked by, and was probably correct.  It is fun being on the inside, but when that kind of mind is turned against  you, it can be a personal hell.  I hated parent teacher conferences.  I would start every school year optimistic and dedicated, until the first time my parents met with my teachers and told them what a screw up I was.  After that, I was treated very differently by my teachers.  She'd do it with my friends, drawing them into conversations, where she'd tell them all my flaws and every embarrassing thing I'd done since age 4.  Nothing was good enough, and my self-esteem got battered to nothing over the years.  I was ill prepared for life when she threw me out of the  house at age 18.   My father was little better.  He was abusive.  He's in prison right now for abusing a child he adopted after I was grown.  I can't tell you the times he came at me with his fists.  I remember clearly a hot summer day when we were working in the yard, and the heat was getting to me.  He picked up fist sized rocks and was throwing them at me, hard.  Fortunately, he didn't hit me, though nearly.   When I finally married in my 30's, after years of trying to get my head together, I married a woman with borderline personality disorder.  Feelings were her reality, even if they were based on nothing.  She would gas light me.  She was never affectionate with our children, and often turned on them as well.  She sabotaged us financially, and kept us living paycheck to paycheck.  I lived in a world where everything I did was wrong.  She'd ask my opinion only to be told her opinion on a  matter was the right one, and she'd go ahead and do whatever she wanted anyway.  When I finally confronted her with the abuse, she said, "Yeah, I abused you, but..." and went on to justify it with everything I ever did wrong as an excuse.  To this day, there is no contrition on her part, and was ultimately why I filed for divorce.   All of this time I suffered with Major Depressive Disorder.  I learned to keep it together.  My parent punished weakness, and I was married to a person who made suicide attempts 5 times while we were married, and once since.  Some one had to keep it together for the kids.  I can smile and go to work and pretend nothing is wrong and be absolutely dying inside.  The more I do that, the more mentally impaired I become.  I become clumsy, distracted, and unable to process.  I lose my short-term memory.  Life just gets stressful.   I finally broke about three years ago and ended up in the hospital.  What I felt was the absolute end of my life was actually the beginning.  I stopped being focused on all the bad things that happened and all the regrets I have (and there are many), I started focusing on what I do have.   After my break I spent 3 months in a homeless shelter and another 9 months in transitional housing.   Three years later, I have a job I never expected to get at a wage I never expected to earn starting out in the industry I am in now.  I am getting ready to see what else is out there for me.  I have a roof over my head.  It isn't perfect, but it is sufficient.  I have clothing.  Like most girls I'd like a lot more, but I have clothes to wear.  I have food to eat.  Maybe too much food.  I have a few friends.  I have finally come to terms with my gender dysphoria and am in transition.  It is far from perfect, but I have a lot of good things, and despite the 50 or so years of misery I am happy.   So, I go to bed every night being thankful.  When people ask me how I am, I say I am blessed.  It keeps me focused on what I have, and not what I don't have, or what I missed out on.  It puts the regrets and the painful past behind me and it dims the memory of the traumatic events and painful days and hours of where I've been.  It has become hard for me to believe I was the depressed mess I once was.   For me medication and an attitude of gratitude has been amazing.  Will there be an end to the pain before you reach your limit to manage it?  I think there will be.  I don't know the specifics of your situation, but I do know you can, one little step at a time, dig yourself out of the hole you're in.  You'd be surprised how focusing on the good will cheer you up a bit, which will change how you interact with people and how they interact with you.  You will find energy to get up from the computer and interact more with the world.  It may take time, but it will get better and better.   Keep us posted on how you're doing.
