Transphobic coworkers

I know I still have a while till I come out at work, but I’m afraid that time will be here before I know it. My issue is my coworkers I’m a heavy equipment mechanic that works in rock quarries and underground mines. 99% of the workers are male and they are your typical male with all of their comments and what not. Several have proven the are transphobic by there comments and the pictures the take of people to make fun of them which is very sad they do this.
I guess the question I’m asking what can I do about this and help myself prepare for what will happen when I do come out. Even my boss made the comment jokingly this morning saying I need to cut my hair because I look gay. I just laughed it off at the time. But really I wanted to crawl in a ball and cry. By the way my hair is still very short. I’m sorry it’s a lot to post but I’m just trying to wrap my head around all this

hugs

Emily

Fortunately, some guys act like that to "fit in" when they're in a space where they think nobody could possibly be offended. Those guys change their tune when they find out that they're speaking out against someone who is present. Some of them even change their mind when they realize that someone they know and like is part of the aforementioned group.

Unfortunately, some of them don't and others double-down because they don't want to be seen as "other."

I'm thinking your boss is going to be a problem because seriously, how is "long hair" gay?

I don't know what the laws are like in Missouri. I know you can be fired here for being trans. Honestly, we're a "Right to Work" state, so we can be fired for any reason or no reason at all. In your shoes I'd make sure that I knew what my rights were in the face of workplace discrimination. The answer to that might be, "Have another job lined up."

If you're union, I'd talk to my union rep and see what they have to say about it. Sometimes we lose our jobs because of who we are. It's terrible, but in most of the United States it's legal.

Hugs!

Hi Emily, That’s a hard work environment to look for acceptance but it doesn’t mean it won’t work out.  @Jackie C. is right though, you need to know your states rights and protections before you move forward on this.

Heres a quick link for that

If I was about to come out in that environment and it turned out to be a safe state to do so, I would start by getting the top boss and asking if you could talk to them after work where there would be no interruptions.  If accepting and will work with you, get their advice how to come out to everyone else.  To see if you can drum up any support for your cause, I’d also be trying to gain a few allies...co-workers that you think might be ok with your coming out. If you let a few of them know first and they accept you it may give you added confidence when telling the rest of the crew.  Either way though, it’s sort of a crapshoot. You can’t predict how mature or immature people will react.  Be prepared for the worst in any case and I would wait until the pandemic ramps down a bit.  Jobs may be harder to find for awhile.

My Best,

Susan R?

I would like to think some would be ok with it, but I’m afraid there will be more that aren’t ok with it and make fun of me or whatever else they do.

missouri is not a right to work state. So I’m lucky there but there are no protection for transgender people. I am union so I would hope my union would help protect me, but there is no guarantees there either. I would like to think they will still keep me. Not to toot my own horn but I’m a good mechanic and mechanics are getting harder to find these days. I would hate to have to find a new job because I like where I’m at. This place has its perks like a company truck and the pay is good. All I know is it will be interesting haha.

As of right now I plan on talking to the hr department at my company, and the business agent with my union. My only issue with the hr department is one of the department heads is also the safety department head and he is interesting to say the least and not in a good way. I don’t plan on saying anything until I have problems passing as a male and by that time we will be so busy they couldn’t afford to find someone to replace me.

Contacting the HR dept. seems like it might be an even a better idea if that dept. head was more reliable. HR knows the company policies which might be more supportive than you know.  Is there anyone else in that dept. that you can contact first to get this information?

Yes there is my plan was to get ahold of that first and see what they have to say. This won’t happen for a while I’m just trying to get some kind of plan and have it somewhat thought out.

Just remember the role of the HR department is NOT to protect the employee but to protect the company.

Yes unfortunately I’m aware of that it will get very interesting. I’m afraid the interesting will not be a good thing, but who knows maybe it will work out just fine I can always hope it will work out.

Jani is 100% right hr is to protect the company. We will see what happens weather they like it or not i have to be me. I know for sure being myself and taking pride in me has to come first if I go back in my shell I don’t think I’d make it a year.

Emily, you're between a rock and a hard place, no pun intended. Yeah I've been in conversations with guys that made comments about people like us that were negative what the hell is wrong with us we're not really women. The sly remarks the transphobic and homophobic slurs. I would stick up for transgendered people to a point I said hey listen if it makes them happy leave me alone are they bothering you. Sometimes I'll just sit there and listen to the rhetoric. Oh yes you do working in a male-dominated society on your back underneath of some of this heavy equipment dirt in your eyes hopefully wearing safety glasses. Currently my job has me out with pay for me making a statement over the phone I was overheard and I was just venting. Is younger guy wanted my hours for overtime ,he's already working 50 to 60 hours a pay. Overtime now but he's greedy. So he turn Me in and told them I wanted to hurt myself.I don't want to hurt myself I was just mad that I owe thousands of dollars into the federal and state this year because the government didn't take enough out of my pension. I tell my accountant I should just stick a gun to my head I can't win for losing... This was February 25th and now I'm out of work with administrative leave pay. Do I really want to go back there no. I work with a bunch of jerks and so hostile working environment. My boss allows  it to happen because he's spineless and won't confront anybody. There's a couple guys that could spit in his face and kick him in the balls and he would just say bye Jules see you tomorrow.  And I work in a state university in a heating plant. They don't know what to do with me if they fire me they need a reason I had to undergo a fit for duty evaluation from a state authorized psychiatrist. Yeah and I admitted  to him I cross-dressed and he couldn't understand why. I told him it made me feel good he goes why. My response was why do people put on that virtual reality masks and pretender  their Michael Jordan dunking the ball 10 feet in the air or driving a NASCAR why. Why do people play video games I pick up different weapons and kill people why. He mentioned to one of my counselors that he felt that I had a personality disorder. he also mentions to me that A co-worker said I was going to sabotage and blow up the heating plant on the campus of a universityI hope this University uses as a reason to let me go cuz I'm not going to have a vested pension there and the people I work with are all backstabbers and they'd fabricate stories just to make me look bad so with that said you have a situation going on.3 days after I left one of the co-worker said I want to sabotage and blow up the heating plant. Now this is a campus where students walk within 60 ft of this building ,would you consider that a terroristic threat. So I got mad I gave them the number to the FBI .I wanted them to investigate who said this and when they heard me say this. You're looking at 15 years in Federal prison for making a terroristic threat. So I told HR now I'm in fear for my welfare coming back and  there they're looking into the who said it and when they heard me say it the alleged statement. So I guess we all have our issues in life. Good luck at least I'm getting paid and I'm not using my sick or vacation time.

Wow that’s ridiculous people just need to learn to do there job and go home. There is one thing I don’t deal with at work is drama. I pretty gave myself the name crabby I just act crabby around certain people and they avoid me it usually works most of the time. It’s sad I have to do that if not I will lose what is left of my sanity. My old version as pretty much a loner but Emily is a little more social able.

On the way back to her desk she was interrupted by six short, urgent conversations that had to be attended to. Then she slipped into the women's room and locked the stall door.  She took a deep breath, then another, and allowed herself to shake for five minutes,  Then deep breathing, ten in and ten out, stretch up, touch the floor, neck rolls and she was fine. She used the toilet and a woman knocked and said, "Taylor, are you okay?"   "Ready to conquer the world!"  on her way out she found her makeup was fine.  Three stalls, two sinks.  If she ever designed a women's room with three stalls, there would be four sinks, with plenty of space to plunk your stuff down between them.   She met a deferential Karen.  "Here is the branding I came up with," she said.  And she went back to working as hard as Brenda and Mary, who looked up worriedly and then went back to the proposal.   Shortly before 5:00 she received an email with the title Consolidation and Compensation.  In it she learned that the position of office manager was eliminated, and the current office manager was to become the chief executive officer. The former CEO, along with the CFO, the chief legal officer, and sundry staff, had been terminated, per the Board of Directors.  Effective immediately everyone would receive a base salary of $20,000 with a commission to be set by the individual's supervisor.  Each supervisor would be given a certain percentage to distribute.  Most functions they had been handled would be outsourced as needed.   "The question of what profit was made last year is frequent enough to be answered.  The company lost over 500,000 in fiscal 2023.  At this point further cuts are not anticipated.  We will be strategically adding positions that will enhance our profits. Hard work is expected of everyone."   Her two web guys had been complaining because their games had been remotely uninstalled.  After the memo came out they were absolutely silent.  That gave her an idea, and after an exchange of emails they were reassigned to maintenance out at the plant, effective tomorrow morning.  There were lots of weeds that needed pulling, if nothing else. That email went out after they left early, for the day.  The maintenance foreman was a no-nonsense type who did not tolerate slacking, and they would learn a thing or two.  This also freed up two spaces for her to put new people.

Except for this thung thwister: Theophilus Thistle, the successful thistle sifter, in sifting a sieve full of unsifted thistles, thrust three-thousand thistles through the thick of his thumb. Now if, Theophilus Thistle, the successful thistle sifter, in sifting a sieve full of of unsifted thistles, thrust three-thousand thistles through the thick of his thumb, how many thistles can'st thou thrust through the thick of thy thumb . . . in sifting a sieve-full of unsifted thistles? Success to the successful thistle sifter!

You have given you and us a big clue right there.  I hope you have shared this observation with your Endocrinologist and are willing to take their advice about changing that behavior.    Non prescribed herbal or animal supplements can have a negative effect on your body's use of your available hormones.  Also, your genetics are going to be controlling what your body is going to do with your hormones, and again, that is for you to consult with your Endocrinologists.  On this site none of us are licensed medical personnel and we cannot give you advice on your health more than what your doctor can.  We have rules that we enforce against our members advising about "Folk Remedies" because we have had members who have gone that route and badly damaged their health and quality of life.  Only thing I can go anywhere on, is that maybe if you change your expectations of what should happen, you will at least not be in danger of harming yourself from anxiety.

Hi lovely people,   I'm a 25 yo MtF woman, and I've been suffering from low estrogen issues since October 2023. I completely lost my feminine libido, my breast completely stopped growing, my estrogen levels dropped by a lot (despite NOT decreasing my E dosage) and thus my dysphoria drastically increased. I think it is worth mentioning that, for my health issues, I had been taking ----- Lamotrigine for months & had been on ketogenic diet, and these things seem to be a culprit of my current issue. I weaned off Lamotrigine some time ago and gave up on keto diet, but it still doesn't seem to help. My estrogen is still low (44 ng/ml) and my libido hasn't come back yet. In general, I struggle with my dysphoria so much because of that and, to be honest, I don't know what to do. I've tried so many dietary supplements, yet I didn't get any effects from them. My endocrinologist didn't know how to help me. She only suggested to increase my daily estrogen dose (to 3x per day ------sublingual estrogen tablets and 3x per day ------ estrogen gel applied to armpits or thighs), which I did, without any effect.   Please, help me. Prior to keto diet & Lamotrigine treatment, I'd never had experience like that. I'm basically helpless and have no clue what to do. Having to deal with low estrogen is a horrible experience to me and it affects my life severely.   BTW, my T levels are always within female range.   Do you have any clue what exactly I should do?

One of our cats is polydactyl.  He has 7 toes on each front paw and 5 on each back paw, for 24 toes total.   Another one, an ex-feral who, at the time, was free to roam, climbed 50 feet up a tree without having any thought about how he was going to get down.  His pal climed down backwards, but he couldn't.  He ended up coming down by leaping from branch to branch.  Which nearly gave us heart attacks, because he only has one eye and therefore has no depth perception.   The other ex-feral (both are now indoor cats) obviously does not have those soft pads on his feet.  At night, when we are in bed, we can hear him stomping around the house.

The two o'clock Onshoring meeting was going well.  Taylor was leading, inviting other people up to speak on their specialties. Aerial photogrammetry and surveying, including the exact boundary, were out for contract signature  Gibson had handled that - Manufacturing was supposed to, but somehow hadn't happened.  Legal issues from Legal. Accounting reported on current costs, including all upkeep, guard salaries, etc.  Manufacturing was supposed to give those numbers, but they hadn't.   The downside was the VP of Manufacturing.  He had arrived at the meeting red-faced, his tie askew, clutching a bottle. It smelled strongly of vodka. He had never done anything in his twenty years of being VP of Manufacturing, and he did not like being asked now.   "Mr. ----, do you have the inventory we asked for?" Taylor asked politely.  VP Gibson had asked him to have his people go through the plant and not only inventory but assess the operational status of every piece of equipment.  They needed to know what they had. "I'm not going to take any f---- orders from a g-d- tra---," he snarled. "God knows what kind of perverts it has dragged into our fair city and bangs every night." "That is completely out of line." That was Gibson.  Taylor controlled herself.  That was a shot at Bob, not just at Taylor.  She was glad Bob was not there to do something stupid.  Had Mrs. McCarthy been talking? What had she said?  Was she given to embellishment?  Taylor took a deep breath. "I'm not sorry.  You f--- can take this stupid onshoring --- and shove it up your -" "That is quite enough."  This was the head of HR. "You can take your sissy ways and sashay -" "You are fired." "You can't fire me." "Oh, yes I can," said the office manager.  The VP took another swig from his bottle. "Try it."  He looked uncertain. "I will have you removed.  Are you going to leave on your own?  I am calling the police to help you leave." And he dialed the number. He stomped out cursing. They heard him noisily go down the hall.  This was the front conference room.  He actually went through security and out the door, throwing his badge on the ground on his way.  The guard picked it up. They could see this through the glass wall. "Can you fire a VP?" "The Board told me that if anyone gives me problems they should be shown the door. Even a VP.  I can fire everyone here. I won't, of course. Those were problems." "Are you alright, Taylor?" She nodded.  "I've heard worse.  Shall we continue?" And they did.   The last item was that certain business people in China had been arrested, and the corporation that had been supporting them all these years had been dissolved.  They were on their own, and the Board was dead serious on straightening things out.  After this meeting, Taylor believed it.  She did not attend the meeting to discuss how to distribute the few duties the VP of Manufacturing had done.  That was ultimately up to the Board.

Lunch was at Cabaret, still free.  The place was quiet: it was the sort of place you took a business client to impress them, and the few other people were in business suits.  Most of the legal profession was there.   She told him of the morning's frustrations, breaking her own rule about confidentiality.  She asked Karen how the branding was going, and Karen had snapped back that she had not started on it yet - they had all these proposals.  Taylor had explained that it was important, for the two o'clock meeting, and Karen told her to do it herself.  Karen pointed out that Taylor could not touch her - her uncle was on the Board and her brother was VP of Manufacturing.  Nor would the two computer guys go out to the plant - they were playing some kind of MMORPG and simply not available. If she wanted the pictures, she should go.  Mary prayed an Ave Maria, but both she and Brenda were racing to get the proposal out. The client wanted it Friday for review.   She didn't bring up what Mrs. McCarthy had told her.  She wasn't sure how to approach it.  She thought of telling her of a 'something more comfortable' she had bought in case he ever DID show up at her door. It was in the bottom drawer of her dresser, ready to go.  Instead she talked about moving to a place with a garage.  Several of the abandoned houses had one, and they had been maintained well with China cash.   Bob had finally realized that when he was introduced as Bob, Taylor's boyfriend, that was just how things were done here. Other people had introduced each other in terms of family relationships, which were strong.  Long before you found out anything else about someone, you knew how they were related.  Family kept people from leaving Millville.    "What is the real name of this town, anyway?"   She laughed.  "I am trying to find that out.  It's 'Welcome to Millvale' when you come into town from the north, and 'Welcome to Millville' on the south.  I have counted two other variants."   "What a town. Roosevelt is like that, with the families, but there is only one spelling."
