Was the police officer backed against his car and could not dodge??  I have handled firearms and can still move to avoid another none firearm weapon.  The D.A. may be right about the verdict if he puts on the lame case he mentions, but why a lame case and why not take the time to look at it.  I have too many questions, and there is the long sad chance it was suicide by cop.

I'm in agreement with Suzanne on this one.  There is too little detail to make an informed opinion, so i won't venture one.  But edged weapons are dangerous, and I've been through training simulations in which a trainer could "stab" an officer before said officer could draw and fire if the "suspect" started out within 10-12 feet.  Closing that distance takes only about 1 second and change.

 

That said, we don't know if all 4-5 shots were fired without evaluating after each shot (recommended) and how many times the suspect was hit and where.  Way too many unknowns here.  It doesn't or shouldn't matter if Thompson was intent on "suicide by cop."  When someone is lunging at you with a knife you don't have time to psychoanalyze them before firing your weapon.  You have, hopefully, just enough time to draw, aim and shoot.

 

Thompson's death is a tragedy, and this shooting deserves a thorough, professional and independent investigation.  I hope for the sake of both Ms. Thompson and the officer, they get one.

The article says, "About two hours later, someone called the State Patrol to report she was still there, and Wade and other officers responded. Shortly after they arrived ..." meaning other officers were present as well, but the article only quotes Wade. Do the other officers corroborate his story?

Also, what does suicide by cop mean? Is it deliberately getting killed by a police officer as a suicide method?

Unfortunately, yes.  It is not as uncommon as you might think.
