I am going to pick up my E today and my finasteride I transfer from CVS to Rite-Aid because insurance wouldn't pay for it and CVS cost was $44 and Rite-Aid cost $22... go figure - but it was worth the calls and that may be later today or tomorrow but my estradiol is in and I start my formal journey today (formal - does that mean gown as opposed to tuxedo....LOL)

Happy Happy Happy

Congratulations!

The anti-androgen isn't nearly as much fun as the estradiol, but I got both of those on the same day. If my car was bigger, I would have had the patch on before I left the parking lot. I love my car, but she's not roomy.

I wish I could do mail order scrips. However, it's not covered by my insurance so it's walking to the drug store for me. At least as long as the weather's nice.

Hugs!

thank you all - I have taken my first dose of each...

Finasteride wasn't covered by insurance - called CVS and with discount still cost $44, checked goodrx and it said rite-aid was $22 with coupon. Went to Rite-Aid and it cost $14 so I didn't use the coupon....and they say that drug companies aren't gauching....

But I'm happy - disphoria dropped immediately and now I can't wait for a 2-3 weeks to pass to feel the effects in some real way...

My NP said Spiro has a bad reputation but Finasteride has good reputation and will also help with male hair loss and reduce PSA in postrate, both of which will be bonuses for me....

Spiro was hard on my kidneys, took a few months to adjust without it....

Wooo hooo the first dose is down, and a day you will always remember...

So happy for you Heather Shay, we will watch for your updates as things get more interesting

According to the interwebs, Finasteride...

  • Should not be taken or handled while pregnant. I think we're OK there.
  • May cause increased risk of prostate cancer. That's no joke.
  • Decreased sex drive. Well duh.
  • Trouble getting or keeping an erection. Also, duh.
  • Ejaculation disorder. Not 100% sure what that is, but it sounds like something you'd expect.
  • Increase in breast size and tenderness. Bonus!
  • Skin rash. That's kind of a bummer.

Serious side effects can include...

  • Swelling in your lips, tongue or throat. So yeah, anaphalaxis. Which I probably didn't spell right.
  • Depression. Keep track of your mood.
  • Lumps or pain in your breasts. Keep an eye out for that one too.
  • Nipple discharge. That seems less serious than depression, but I can see where it would make some men freak out.

Hugs!

Interesting about the prostate cancer - I read it lowers PSA and about 5 years ago I did the stupid thing and bought gray market E, spiro and progesterine and self-medicated and my PSA went up to 4.5 and my doctor had me see a specialist - side note - I stopped the self-medicating by this time - the specialist took 2 biopsies on the prostate (not fun even with the doping pill they give you) - the first said no cancer but not normal (duh) and the second was normal but that guy wanted to keep going with biopcies and stuff - talked to my doctor and we agree that my numbers weren't bad and we would monitor to see if any spikes occurred and through the years it has ranged from 3.9 to 4.9 so he figures that is my normal and he wasn't worried about and was VERY supportive of me going on HRT as he has a trans-son and he fully understands what this means to me. We will be monitoring it - but from the literature I am hopeful PSA will drop 2-3 points based on statistics.
