Hey there guys and girls,

I'm Fwip, a 22 year old college student about to graduate in computer engineering, and I'm pretty sure I want to live as a woman. I've been lurking since about a week before I registered, and a while after that too.

Unlike a lot of you, I haven't 'known' that I had gender issues until these last few years, though if I look back earlier in my life I can see some pretty clear signs. Last winter, depression hit me pretty hard, as I had no idea how effective transition could be. I was very afraid that I would have to choose between living the rest of my life as a man, or as a man in women's clothing. I don't necessarily need to have SRS (or whatever the proper term for it is); as long as I can live and be accepted as my chosen gender I will be happy. Since finding Laura's, I've found the courage to come out to two close friends, two old friends, and my (younger) sister. I've been incredibly lucky so far in that they've all been either very supportive or extremely cool with it. I feel _so_ much better just knowing that I am started down the path to becoming who I want to be - I'm no longer constantly plagued by guilt, depression, and my old self-mutilation habits. That last item is the most surprising to me - I've bitten, sliced, scraped and torn the skin off my hands and feet almost compulsively since I was around five years old, but recently all desire to do it has vanished into thin air. My hands are healed and I've finally been able to start growing my nails out. ;)

I currently plan to make an appointment with a gender therapist before the end of this year, so that I can start working out who I want to be and the best way to get there. So far, I've only made baby steps, but I feel so much better reading all of your inspirational stories.

Even though I haven't even begun to transition, I think that I would already count myself as one of Laura's Playground's successes. :D

Hello, Fwip, and Welcome to Laura's.

Since you've been out there lurking, you already know a lot about what goes on here.

I'm sure you've noticed we are friendly, helpful, caring and full of fun.

So please make yourself at home, now that you're on the inside. It's nice and cozy in here.

Haha, I guess I wasn't all too clear on that. It actually comes from a short-lived nickname that I had in high school (because my hair 'fwipped' in the front). I ended up creating a character in an online game, liked the name, and it eventually ended up that most of my friends I've met in college now usually refer to me as Fwip or Fwippy. I do love the way it sounds (and that Fwippy sounds anything but masculine :P ), but I think it's probably a little too out of the ordinary for an eventual real-life name. If I had to pick a girl's name to go by, I'd probably pick Jane... but I've certainly got a lot of time to make that decision. ;)

Oh, I _love_ cocoa! And I can never refuse a plate of cookies, either. :P I'm afraid that with all the delicious treats around here, I'll have to be careful to keep my figure!

Thanks Darlene, it's really great to have a positive role model that's overcome these problems. Seeing all of y'all's posts shows me the strength of character that we are capable of. :)

P.S: I stripped the emoticons out of the quotes, because I got an error that my post contained too many! I guess I'll have to be careful to limit myself in the future. :P

Yes - some don't know their cause of their distress - until later in life. DO see that therapist! he or she will CHANGE YOUR LIFE - for the better.

So glad to meet you and do post a few questions and a few answers - we need your input here!

Thanks Davie! And don’t worry, I didn’t take it that way. It’s just such a big topic I can only hope to tackle it one bit at a time.

This is not uncommon.  I started out going to the therapist in androgynous clothing: from the women's department, but plausibly masculine.  What made it easier was when I started going to a trans peer support group.  Most of the people there were presenting fully feminine, so I looked out of place in my androgynous clothing.  The peer pressure made it easier to dress in skirts.   I started out changing in a gender-neutral bathroom near the meeting room.  But I soon started wearing skirts in the car to and from the meetings.   Yes, it was nerve-wracking at first, but I soon realized that no one was looking and no one cared.    You can do this.

In my last session my therapist is starting to suggest that I need to start exploring my gender identity in a more tangible way through wearing feminine clothing at least during sessions.  I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around her seeing me actually en femme.   I love and trust her, but the thought of being visibly feminine is scaring (and thrilling) me.  Is this a common thing in gender therapy?  How do I get past the fear?  More importantly, what should I wear?

I felt the urge to date and felt just like a teenager again. I have recorded my journal titled Ashley's Life From Start to Present. I was very moody and agitated and happy. I think it was my body's way of being in shock. After about two months it got better. Remember that you aren't the only one transitioning because your wife is too. Consider yourself lucky because I lost mine because of it and so have many others. Just enjoy the ride.

I'm sorry for asking so many questions about your situation. I'm in your camp and believe you should be able to be whoever you feel you need to be. I guess it the Union Shop Stewart coming out in me. I want you to be treated fairly as well as respectably. You're human, you're a client of theirs. Views, terminology, and aspects of how events came to be....aren't those directly related to the news item?  If not, I'm rather confused.

Second warning, this has gotten far and apart from the NEWS item that it started out with and is becoming a flat out battleground over political leanings and terminology.
