Rx Meds And Its Dangers

About five years ago during a company take over I was having trouble sleeping especially on Sunday nights.

A friend recommended that I see my Dr. and ask for *******. I called my phyician and he said this stuff could be habit forming but I trust you and will prescribe it for you.

So I used ****** once a week, Sunday nights and only took half a dose.

Well after awhile I took it nightly and if I was fearful of a high tension day on the job, I would include it with my lunch.

I rarely used it at work but it was always there if I needed it.

I admit I used it about three times over a five year period at work.

Well to make a long story short, I began using the****** nightly, still half a dose, so I was able to accumulate quite a large amount of the pills.

Well one day not long ago I realized that I was becoming dependent on the Rx for sleeping through the night. That was not where I I wanted to be..so I just quit taking the pills and here I am gettig about 4 of 5 hrs. sleep a night and taking a great nap in the afternoon.

I am completley happy with that and feel that I am free and clean form Dr. prescribed meds....

Thank god for will power and the realization that chemical dependency comes in many forms.

chemical dependency comes in many forms.

Yes it does. Even though I'd smoked marijuana a couple years earlier, I dont' think I really started messin with the slippery slope till I got with the prescription drugs ( I was 15) They weren't prescribed to me, but I took them pretty much the same way you started. -Just at x time and for x reason.....ok, x and y....and on and on. Pretty soon you're on them "all the time". I'm glad you figured it out now.

I was prescribed a heavy dosage of a barbiturate to treat a massive duadal (spelling?) ulcer while I was in college - well over double the recommended adult daily dosage - I took them four times a day for over a year and when I was finally told that I could stop taking them I was able to put them away and never took another.

Am I blessed with a totally non addictive personality - not hardly - I hated those pills so it was easy to quit, now chicken fried steaks and pepperoni pizza can attest to my ability to become addicted so I stay away from as many drugs as possible - I only take cold medicine for 3 days.

Knowing that as a human you are prone to addictions and sometimes even self destructive behavior can help you make the better choice.

Love ya,

Sally

I think that things that appear harmless are more insidious. I did the same thing with prescriptions for a while. Because I knew they were okay under some circumstances, I started pushing those circumstances a little more and a little more.

Actually I think weed is similarly insidious. Alcohol, you know when you drank too much because you get obvious symptoms of poisoning. Most drugs you know when you O.D. Weed is dangerous because you can smoke and smoke and be smoking an amount that's waaaay too much and is really killing off bazillions of brain cells and cutting off your air supply and hardly notice it ...and smoke some more. Since it seldom kills anyone outright, everyone thinks its "safe." I really dislike that drug for that reason.

Thanks Sally and like you I have never had a problem with traditional 'addictions' so that is why it was realtively easy to walk away form the 'sleeping ' pills.

But as you said there is danger out there..I have a tendency towards compulsive behavior,,usually in a positive form,,work habits, working out habits, and good nutrition, but once in awhile I can get tripped up and find myself on a dangerous path,,pursuing love interests and the allure of the syrens can get me in trouble..so i avoid that and thank god it keeps my marriage in tact.

I don't know . I used sleeping pills that started with a T or Sec, a joint, and two cups of coffee everyday and through out the day for years. A lot of years. If I wasn't high I couldn't walk out the door and face the world. They made me feel like I had a force field around me. I would get wasted at night. A lot of t-girls used to inject them for a big hit. I sometimes miss that feeling.

Twenty nine days later and my normal sleep patterns have returned.....in bed by 11;00 and not up till after dawn..but as fate would have it.....I'm working all week Monday through Friday..so no sleeping in....but I'm happy for the natural cycle.....

I had no idea that my body and mind were so controlled by such a supposedly innocuous Rx drug......

Every one beware.....and alert to this world wide phenom....

Dependent and not aware of it....or thinking it "Can't Happen To Me..'' But it does......

I am very prone to abusing drugs/alcohol. My problem lies with my ability to leave stuff alone. If there's alcohol in the house (which there almost never is), I can't really leave it alone until it's gone. I have the same issue with codeine. When I have pain due to minor injuries or recurring pains, regular tylenol just won't cut it so I get the 8mg codeine, which does work, but again, I take too much and keep taking it til it's gone.

Fortunately, I don't have a problem when it comes to buying it. I can't leave it alone when I have it, but I have no problem not buying it. So when I need it, I buy the smallest amount possible, then avoid buying it again for at least a few months. As with alcohol, I generally avoid buying it to take home, I just may have a drink or three if I'm out somewhere, though even that's rare.

I know how strong the potential is for me to cross the line, so I'm a lot more careful than I used to be.

well the moral of the story is that if your doctor prescribes it, it doesn't make it safe to use. Doctors have about 4 hours of addictions training in medical school and that is it. Most of them don't have a clue about the addictive potential of drugs they commonly prescribe. The other thing is that doctors prescribe drugs--except for surgeons that's pretty much all they do. There are alternatives to drugs to treating many, many disorders, sleep disorders included. (Oh! that I could only find a doc to prescribe diet pills to keep me on top of the world!!!!! LOL Mia I bet I know the drug your MD prescribed--most widley prescribed drug for sleep problems. My brother is hooked on it and gets goofy as a wooden watch on it and when my dad was prescribed it totally freaked out my mother! when he took it!! I still get late night non-sensical emails from my brother (who is a professional medical person) late at night when I can tell he has taken his ------.

If that happens, a lot of things I don't want to see might also be codified into law.  And some things that shouldn't be law might not get repealed.  To me, progress in one area isn't worth the price we'd have to pay in several other areas.     For me, voting on LGBTQ issues always ends up as an "out of the frying pan, but into the fire" sort of event.

Trying out a new wig. Got my reading glasses on. I've also got dark roots now - first time in years.

Thea, your post made me think of a comic named Chloe Petts whom I saw recently on Hannah Gadsby's Gender Agenda comedy special on Netflix. She is a cisgender masculine lesbian. She is brilliant and so funny. I was intrigued by her identification - specifically masculine, not butch. And it seems to me there is a difference.

Today I had a dr appt. When I checked in, I was asked my surname, which I gave. Apparently there were two patients with appointments at that time with that same surname. The receptionist asked, "Are you (my legal name which is feminine) or Paul?" I got such a kick out of it not being assumed I had the feminine name.

That must have felt affirming, albeit perhaps weirdly so. However, I'd construe that more broadly (no pun intended) as sexism rather than misogyny where the latter would imply contempt. Also, incidentally, I've heard chivalry referred to as "benevolent sexism".

My boss is in a panic. His business is a couple straws away from breaking a camel in half. He's just handling the stress very poorly.   My dad, though. He's handling things pretty well, as long as I continue to don't get massively offended by being called: son, boy, etc. His eldest is leaving the State and looks so different than he's been used to over the years. I haven't told him I'm on HRT, but to be fair the changes haven't been massive. I've always had boobs, more so after COVID weight gain and made more obvious with its loss, but now I'm not hiding them--and obviously wearing a bra. The estrogen has done some work, but nothing major (sadly). I think the biggest HRT changes have been my skin and a mild amount of fat redistribution.   Today I'm wearing my cheater, I almost have cleavage! :D I need to get another t-shirt bra to keep a good rotation. I only have two, one push-up, and the rest are unlined (great for Summer, but not great for my Summer wardrobe ).

I eat a ketogenic diet and have had no problems. I don't know about your case but I suspect it is the estrogen. Research the types of ways to take estrogen. Pay close attention to the bloodwork results. If they are not satisfactory, bring it up with your doctor. I take injectables, which are fully covered by insurance. It may not be the route for you, but something to consider. I emphasize to do your research and good luck. You can solve this. Be persistent.    Jennifer

I'm in a magenta blouse under a baby blue buttoned cardigan - still a little cool here in the northeast today - with dark blue jeans. Oh, and my favorite flame colored copper feather earrings.

White crop top and capri jeans ;) Finaly tricked the face id on my phone, "that's not you" lol.

This is my opinion, so take it for that. Fatigue is based more on what you eat. Eat a more healthy diet, and stay away from ultra-processed foods and that should help. Think of eating the way we did a couple hundred years ago before the industrial revolution. It's just a thought.   Jennifer

I like the fact that you found support and have close members of your life. That is very important. No matter where you are on your journey, you have to have the support. Or you drift, and you question yourself.    Looking forward to your progress,   Jennifer
