Yes its that time, the time to remember those who were murdered in the attacks on the WTC and Pentagon and the brave souls who tried to take back the plane that crashed in PA.

What were you doing that fateful morning when the world stood still?

Do you remember the skies with not a plane flying anywhere in North America?

8 years on and what have we learned, what is the legacy of those who died that day

This is our family's memorial to those who died.

That morning, one I will never forget, i was headed into work. I had just got into the parking lot and was only half listening to the radio when the announcer said "The Word Trade Center has just collapsed." I stopped the car and said "Dont tell me I heard what I thought I just heard" with in a minute or two they reiterated the statement and went into more details.

When I got into the office every TV in the place was on CNN and the pictures were chilling, it was one of those life defining moments, like the assassination of JFK those of us who lived through that day and the days and weeks which followed will never forget it.

anyone remember the day this image was published?

Well I was in Logan airport on Sept.11th and headed out west. The plane across the concourse left at 8:05 and my plane left at 8:10 both headed out west.....the plane that left 5 mins. before me was crashed into the Twin Towers,,,my plane was forced to land in Detroit,,and my wife and I spent three days in a hotel room...We finally were able to rent a car and took two days driving back home,

I was in shock then and still till this day I am in denial that it could have been us that crashed into the tower.....

I remember very clearly where I was on 9-11-2001. I worked in a law enforcement field and we were on the picket line/on strike at the time. One of the admin people came out with a large radio so that we could hear the news of the first plane crashing. Then the news of the second plane crashing & everyone knew this was no accident---we all left the picket line and returned to work. Canada had a good number of U.S. bound flights diverted to various Canadian airports during the chaos that ensued. The horror of watching the towers fall and burn on tv will never be forgotten. A couple of friends had cousins that were working in the towers that day and lost their lives as well. Another friend had a relative who sought refuge in the subway tunnels, as did many. However, the smoke that filled the tunnels eventually caused an aggressive lung cancer that killed him (& others) a couple of years later at the age of 32. Today is a day when give special remembrance to the victims and the heroes, as well as the need to be vigilent about national security issues.

In Perth we are 12 hours ahead of EST and I had just arrived home with my wife from our pre-natal class as she was pregnant with our daughter.

It was early evening when the newsflash came on the TV covering the first plane to hit the towers.

I couldn't believe my eyes and spent the next few hours riveted to the TV, and spent the rest of the night in a restless sleep wondering if these strikes were occuring anywhere else in the world and what did it all mean?

A very sad time.

My heart goes out to all those who lost their lives on that day.

I used to go to work a little later than most and I would watch the news in the morning before going - I had to go a little earlier than usual because I had to go by the lab and pick up a large order of prints on my way.

I saw the first tower with smoke billowing from it and speculation as to how a polane could have gotten so far out of control as to hit a building then just before I left the second tower was hit - no more speculation this was an attack and then the Pentagon was struck - all planes were being grounded.

I left for the lab absolutely stunned and when I arrived there they had a small black and white TV with rabbit ears and a grainy, rolling image where I saw the towers collapse.

The people at the lab were friends of mine and we always joked and had a good visit while I checked out the prints - I don't remember if I even looked at the prints but I do remember the silence.

In the days that followed I remember standing on the balcony of our master bedroom, we lived in Nanaimo at the time. I used to occasionally count the planes and wonder where they were going or coming from. After Transport Canada closed the domestic airspace to all traffic EXCEPT emergency landings; it was eirey standing there and knowing that any plane flying probably meant no good.

The pictures of all of Canada's major and not so major airports looking more like parking lots with aircraft wingtip to wingtip on any available piece of ground will also stick with me, the lines to donate blood and to see what, if anything else we could do to help. My wife trying desperately to track down two relatives who worked in the pentagon and the relief when she found they didn't go to work that day for some reason. We had a time of it because trying to get a call into that area was nigh on impossible.

Gone but not forgotten 3000+ lives senselessly taken, for no other reason than to try and make a political point

I had always lived in the flight path from a military air base and to not hear constant airplanes over head was almost too much to handle.

After any air disaster they would send up almost every piolot on base to avoid them having time to think about the possibilities of them crashing - sort of back on the horse before you even fell off program - not on 9 - 11!

Even they were grounded once the civilian planes were all down.

I was asleep when my cousin called. My wife answeered the phone and woke me up, saying that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. And, I, like millions of other Americans remained glued to the TV watching as the 2nd plane hit then the news of the Pentagon and flight 93 crashing.

Watching the Towers fall knowing that thousands of innocent people were dying devastated both of us. The ash roainf through the streets, people running for their lives [ worse thana sene from a horror flick].

It is a pcture from hell that I shall carry to my grave. And, to be quite honest, anyone convicted with terrorist attacks deserves the final penalty.

The most recent case is Zasi with his bombing plot. Unfortunately, all of his band have not been captured. The second, is the nut case who pulled up next the the Federal Court House with a truckload of explosisves and pushed the button. Only problem, it was a dud detonator and a FBI agent sitting in the truck with hi. And, how about the jackass in Dallas who drove a truckload of exploasives into the basement of a skyscraper and detonated it. But, with the same results; a dud and an FBI agent in the truck with him.

But, we as Americans need to take our country's security as a priority. We do need to remain vigilant; if it doesn't look right- it probably ain't right. Better to error on the side of a little bad judgement than no judgement call at all.

I live under the flight path from Pittsburg to Columbus and even today when I'm outside I listen to the jets engines and look up into the Heavens and say a little prayer for the folks on board to reach their destinations safely.

Wow. I was 13 then but the day is so clear in my head. I remember walking into my parents room trying to find them when I looked at the TV in their room, just by chance, and saw a replay of what had happend in the USA.

I was in the kotch doing schoolwork I thin and my mom was in the other room with the TV on when she told us to hurry and see what was on the news.

A few days later friends of our's who could see the Twin Towers from their house sent us a picture taken from their daughter's school of the attack after the first plane hit.

I was shell shocked watching the TV even though I didn't understand what was happening (too young) and the picture was haunting even though I didn't completely get that then either.

A very hollowing time.

I was on active duty in the Navy, awaiting my medical discharge. I was on an inspection tour when the first plane hit. I arrived back at our shack between hit #1 and #2. Our receptionist told me I'd better get into the meeting room with everyone else. I wondered if I had missed a meeting for which I would be chewed out. Almost as soon as I entered and looked at the TV in the corner, hit #2 was shown. I was floored!

Then I called my doctor and detailer, trying to get sent back to sea duty so I could get back at whomever did that terrible thing, and I'm hardly a violent person!

Didn't happen, naturally as I was already too sick to serve any longer and was just waiting for paperwork to be finished. I'd have gone back for a third tour in the Gulf if my nation had asked me to.

I donated money to the relief fund instead.

Hello Joanna ,

Im late with this reply but when I saw your post I wanted to say something.

I , very outwardly and unashamedly am a big lover of good old Uncle Sam,,,,why ?????

In its DNA America and its people are fair minded, honest, hard working folk who will

never kick you when your down ,Amen!!. 9/11, where was I,, what was I doing ?,well

hun, I was in work when one of the women there came in to my department screaming

re what was unfolding on tv. I sat down and watched with the rest of the world

America"s Heart being torn out of her chest and I could not help myself , I cried like

a child . I was completely overpowered by the events that day, but Joanna, I can never

get out of my head the pictures of people throwing themselves out of those windows so

so high up . There were two types of people involved in that mass murder , there were

the victims and there were the"" unspeakables"",,,the latter dont get a mention ,,not in

my reply, never. All good thinking people around the world will always remember the

victims of that day, and of course , those brave men and those brave women who were

the rescuers , your bravery will be remembered forever. America will always have the

support of the free world ,after all, its because of America ,,the world is free,,,viv.

Yes. I appreciate y'all mods and what you do for us - including reining me in when I'm heading in a bad direction.

I could not agree more or be more appreciative of this. As one who has come out to only a few people, here I can truly be myself with little fear of inadvertent exposure. Having that ability has helped me to find myself and to gain confidence in expressing my true self. It has helped me to love myself, something I could never do before.

As far as things being lost on the Web, accidents happen, Just here alone, I have 20,825 posts showing in my number count, but probably only 19K of them are still actually here to view.  There was a change to a new server a number of years ago, and a segment of the data base they were in became locked and could not be transferred to the new drive in the servers we use now.  Why or how that segment of the data base became locked has not been figured out in the time since but at least we know what happened and it was not intentional or aimed at a single element of behavior here.  Data accidents happen with not one single person really responsible for them or for that matter even the computer itself.  Frustrating as all get out when it happens, but it does happen.  Some other electronics I work on as a hobby had their similar problems here a couple days ago because of the Solar Flares, and power outages or dips in voltage can make electronic life miserable.

This is very true, Jani.  The original owner of this site, Laura, and her chief assistants, developed our community rules more than 15 years ago.  They have been modified many times, to take into account changing tastes, mores, technical issues and legal issues.  Sites such as TikTok and X didn't exist then.  Our naughty word filter, as just one example, has been modified many, many times.   On this site, as on most private sites, in order to become a member one must agree to the T's & C's and abide by, in our case, the "Community Rules."  If you seriously violate those rules your membership can be terminated.  So, yes, freedom of speech here is restricted.  Some sites are lax about enforcement, but that has never been the case here.  We guard the safety of members, and your emotional comfort, zealously.  We aren't perfect and sometimes let things get out of hand, or we go too far with restrictions, but those instances are uncommon (IMO).   Every site has different standards.  Luckily, for every interest there are numerous sites and it's usually easy to find one that fits your needs and temperament.  When it comes to the Internet, one size does not fit all.   Thanks for your question, @Ladypcnj.   Carolyn Marie

If I take time to type something up which I find personally important or impactful, I will first type it on a Word document or on the notes app on my phone and save it before sharing it online if the intention of the writing was to be shared in that way. Indeed, it is extremely frustrating for that sort of work to vanish when it was an emotional experience to have recounted and written it. But if it does happen, my advice would be to try to focus on having had the personal catharsis of transforming the thoughts into words. Even if the writing has vanished, your intention was acted out. You cannot control the results, whether it disappeared or not. So we can try our best to focus on gratitude for having been able to express what was expressed in the way it was expressed, rather than disappointment over it not bearing the fruit we expected it to. From a higher point of view, all things of this world are non-permanent. So when something like that happens, at best we can view it as an opportunity to practice mitigating grief over non-permanence of all things. All this is easily said - I acknowledge it is challenging. But without challenge, we do not grow.   As far as freedom of speech is concerned, my view is that implicit in freedom of speech is duty in exercising that freedom responsibly. That means applying ethics to speech. One may ask, "whose ethics?" which is a valid question. The answer is, your ethics. If you wish to participate in a community with a specific code of rules or ethics, it is up to you to use your art and skill to express yourself within that framework. Of course in certain contexts it becomes imperative to speak up, breaking the rules - blowing whistles as it were. But that likewise should be done skillfully as much as possible. If one feels unduly constrained within a community ethical framework, one may also exercise their freedom to not participate in that community. It is a balance, like anything else in life. There is no ethical framework which is ideal because this is not an ideal world. So, tldr; do your best and make good decisions.

As a private platform the owner can limit what is said on this space.   I'm sure someone with more authority and/or insight into this issue will chime in. Jani   “A few narrow categories of speech are not protected from government restrictions. The main such categories are incitement, defamation, fraud, obscenity, child pornography, fighting words, and threats. As the Supreme Court held in Brandenburg v. Ohio (1969)   The Freedom of Speech is one of the most essential tenants of American democracy, yet that right is not absolute. The First Amendment prohibits States from passing laws that “abridge the Freedom of Speech.” Thus, because Platforms are private businesses, individuals cannot use the First Amendment to pursue recourse against censorship on a private platform.”

I've heard of this being done.  It seems like a good idea, I mean the gas is already there.  I don't see why it couldn't be done on a larger scale.  The technology already exists.  I expect the problem would be coordinating it all, and who does that.  We're all so determined to protect our own turf, myself included.

Good morning   my body and my mind kept waking me up saying hey aren’t you supposed to be getting up now since about 4am. I finally got up at 8:20 to get ready for my 10am shift.  I guess your wake up system gets into a habit and doesn’t like change.off tomorrow, then work Memorial day.    We got rain and a bit of thunder last night. Nothing too bad, unlike the poor people in the Midwest. They are really getting hammered with tornadoes this spring.  I suppose we’ll get ours later on.  It’s supposed to be a bad hurricane season and we haven’t had a really bad one in quite a few years.  The worst I’ve seen was a Cat 3 when the eye went right over us.     I stayed and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be but a 5? Now that’s another story.  I really don’t know how these condos will hold up to a bad hurricane.  Yes there is bracing throughout but how well was any of it installed?  Only the tradesmen plumbing electricians finish craftsmen spoke English the rest were all Hispanic and different emigrants worked together on different parts of the buildings.  One group did the framing and sheathing another different crew the roof, another the windows and so on.  Each building is 4 stories 18 units.  On the bottom we have four units with double walls but the top two are 5 each and no double walls.    @Mirrabooka I didn’t see many Reds, Roos or grasshoppers when I was in Australia.  I was mostly in Tasmania where they are mostly Wallabies.  My wife got to hold a young Tazzy Devil and a Koala Bear and I’ve held a wombat.  An emu got the best of my wife stealing all the food she had.   time to get ready for my day   Willow

As we know online rules are usually created by a team of people, basically the guideline rules are to keep everything running smoothly, and everyone is treated equally, and most importantly the code of conduct to make sure no rules are broken. My concern is, what happens when the online community rules (in general speaking) can have an impact on the freedom of speech? Perhaps it might had been artificial intelligence, that took down a post I made on the internet, somewhere else. I know I haven't broken any rules, I was sharing a true story experience I had about online safety, so it doesn't happen to anyone else.. then the post was taken down. I felt to frustrate the time and energy I've spent typing out my experience what happened to me, and then poof it was gone  lol  What can I do about this? lol
