Growing Your Own Nails

Ya know,

As many will find out,HRT affects the nails on your hands dramatically.

Causing them to split, layer and peel,as they lose the strength they once had.

I wore acrylics for a while, then the maintenance got too much for me,and

decided to try and grow my own again. It was maddening to have them finally

starting to look good, then they would split or layer and break off ragged over

and over and over.(urg)How frustrating.

It was in a beauty magazine where I got my tip that is having fabulous results.

First I went with,Sally Hansen Nail Miracle. This stops the peeling and splitting cold.

Then, and very important,is to buy a good nail file and work them almost daily.

If you see a chip, file it off.You may lose some length but the nail wont peel, split or

break off.For the first time in over two years,I am actually getting some good length

and strong nails. For the satisfaction of growing your own,and the beauty of the nails,

I would recommend anyone try this simple cheap and effective method.

Hugs to all and good luck on long pretty nails again or for the first time,

Angie

Angie -

While not on HRT yet, I've tried to grow my nails and just as they start to look good, they split, break, etc. A clear nail polish seems to help, but due to family issues, I've not been able to wear polish all the time.

Angie,

I am going to try this today! I have been looking for a solution to my nail problems for years. I swim, and after 90 minutes or 2 hours in the pool, even with 6 coats of polish, they get so waterlogged that the polish just comes off and they start to peel and split. I hope Sally Hansen Nail Miracle will help, thanks so much for the tip.

A cosmetologist told me recently to get a good cuticle oil and apply it up to six times a day. She told me it's the only way to protect your nails is from the cuticle. It will take time to grow your nails out once you start this regiment so don't give up on it before you see result's. I use to have the most beautiful nails before I went on HRT and I'm hoping that this will work for me as well.

I've given up on growing good looking nails. I just can't do it. I will get them just about perfect then they break. I think I'm stuck with acrylics.

I'm starting to get that feeling but will try some of this stuff first... but when moving day comes all bets are off as to how long any nail will last.

For some people - HRT makes nails more brittle. Happened to me. So after a long struggle - I have a better way of growing them out. Most all points have been mentioned above.

(1) your nail bed starts at the base where new nails are actually generated - avoid over-stimulating that area. You can push the cuticle back and need to , but don't overdo it.

(2) The nails really need moisturizing! People forget this. At night use a good general hand cream and don't forget your nails. You can also buy special cuticle creasm.

(3) The nail is part of your body and reflects your general health. The better you take care of yourself the better your nails grow.

(4) Over-filing on the broad top surface (filing to get rid of ridges) will actually weaken the nail after it gets to the unsupported point so try equalling ridges with a light touch and fill depressions with Saly Hausen's nail strengthener

(5) All the Sally Hausen nail treatments seem to be great - there are other brands but this brand is inexpensive and seems to work.

(6) A secret! You can wear the nail stengthener ALL the time - even if you are not out. Use a matte finish on top (men's manacure products) - if you cannot find it, use model paint from the hobby shop.

(7) When a nail gets split or damaged, if you can file it out - do so immediately. Putting it off only causes it to get worse - just smile and do it - auggggh

(8) VERY short term repair? superglue - but watch out not to use too much and understand it tends to go everywhere, even where you don't want it

(9) File the roughness off your nail tips EVERYDAY so they don't snag and get damaged.

(10) CUT off hangnails carefully and use an antibiotic cream to prevent infection - NEVER bite them off. Also, damaged nail - NEVER bite it off , use a clipper.

(11) Clippers can really shatter a nail tip in a way you cannot see - use a file if you can - always

I am not on any kind of HRT I have a different problem I have psoriasis which makes your nails very weak and prone to spliting and breaking off. I have been using a nail strengthener and try to protect them with a matte finish nail polish I use a product from Orly called Nails for Males it dries to a very matte finish and I go everywhere and nobody notices.

Since I am growing mine out,and I can't realy see the early

damage with a nail color on,I tend to use the Miracle solution

all by itself as a clear coat. And if one does likes color, use a a base

and top coat.Like Lizzy said, check you nails regularly,do it every day.

And you will see results before you know it.

Good morning and congratulations @MirandaBon getting your ears pierced. This opens up a new line of jewelry to buy and collect.    @KymmieLits ashamed that any employee would ever to post a sign like this.    Well Parker Von Schwinegruber not only got me up early, we enjoyed our first cup of coffee on the patio before the sun was up. Oh it was daylight but just barely. The second cup of coffee was in the recliner, and now I’m pinned here and need someone to pour my third cup.    It’s a dog’s life… Eat, play, go potty and sleep. I adore the Bee Gees. There's no way that I could link all their great songs in the above post. To me though, this song of theirs is head and shoulders above everything else:

My long hair is the single most important physical feature of my body which confirms the presence of my inner woman.   That said @SS, I am the 'other' sort of bi-gender. I am of the simultaneous type. I do not flip-flop between girl days and boy days either mentally or through presentation. For me, I am both primary genders at the same time, and the compromise is made through an androgynous presentation. When I look in the mirror, I can see either, but I am happy to admit that when I see a woman, I am happier.

Quite unexpected!   I had my weekly conversation with my father last night and he mentioned something he did that caught me totally off guard.  He was browsing garage sales and came across a nice blond wig, he decided to buy it and his wife was quite perplexed he said.  They had a dinner date with a couple that are friends since high school, and my father went dressed as a woman (with his wife's assistance). He said he did it as a "joke", but spent the entire evening dressed.

Thank you! So do I! Although I'm proud of what it portrays, I don't wear it often because I think it could be taken as being a bit provocative. One part of me says look at me, I'm proud to be on the rainbow and the other part says pull your head in, you're asking for trouble.   I do have a more subtle pride t-shirt that I visibly wear more often, here is a representation of it: "Moon phase rainbow" V-Neck T-Shirt by secretmagic | Redbubble
