Main Passes Pro 8 Style Referendum

Just got this in an email from the HRC

A deep and bitter disappointment from Maine yesterday: Maine voters have passed a devastating Proposition 8-style measure overturning the state’s marriage equality law.

Our hearts are with everyone in Maine who fought so hard to win recognition for their families. The legislature passed marriage equality earlier this year, but a divisive anti-LGBT campaign to scare voters seems to have worked.

It is infuriating to see that the same fear-mongering ads that were used to pass Prop. 8 a year ago have triumphed again at the expense of so many. This is a terrible loss.

Although we lost our battle in Maine, we will not allow the lies and hate – the foundation on which our opponents built their campaign – to break our spirits. We are on the right side of history and we will continue this fight with even more vigor.

It failed mostly due to the hate campain by the moral right making people believe that Gay lifestyle

would be taught in schools to people's kids without their approval.... I saw this on the news 8 hours ago....

Total lies.....

A set back for us.....

I had not seen any news - and I wish that I hadn't read that correctly but it seems that I did.

A giant step forward for ignorance and bigotry and another step backward for tolerance and acceptance.

I just wish that they would put their time and money into ending the depression or the wars around the world instead of fighting battles against people who mean them no harm.

I find it difficult to hate the followers because they are so lost and troubled and have found the wrong leaders - I believe firmly that love is the only way to happiness and that is for everyone, no room for hate in a world full of love.

Love ya,

Sally

This school issue is something the LGBT community needs to get on top of right away. The religious right makes it sound as if elementary school kids are going to be learning about porn-industry-sex against their will in school, which is simply not true. Now I don't know what it takes to get on the airwaves, but if they are posting these television ads and radio spots against us, we need to be throwing back our own.

You're right, Anna. Fear mongering is easy and effective. It gets the headlines and people remember the fear ads. The reasoned responses get neither

the attention or the press. It will continue to be an uphill battle and the Community needs to be proactive, not reactive. Reacting to a fear ad already

means you're too late.
