Therapists Question(s)

Well I am young and anyways, my question mainly involves therapists that see patients for transitioning. and I have been looking into them to find one, the big problem with this for me though is I do not have health insurance, I live alone and have only a small income... I have been saving for about 2 years for transitioning and all of the costs needed for it as I know I am a girl - anyways - my question is does anyone know if there are some therapists out there that focus in this that may be cheaper and still worth it? Its hard to afford it when I can barely afford my rent although I do have some money saved I'd rather save as much as I can for the actual transition and all of that if possible, just curious if anyone knows if there are therapists out there that may sympathize with my type of situation and give reduce costs or payment plans and such...

Sorry if this is a stupid question i've looked around online for this type of thing and it has just given me lists of therapists not ones that may work with you at least it seems as so...

There are some out there who charge on a sliding scale that is based on your income. Others (who may be just starting out in the field) may do it for next to nothing just to get the experience behind their belt. Shop around is all I can tell you. My therapist charges on a sliding scale.

I have to agree that you should shop around. Just call a few of the therapists and see if they have any experience in gender issues. If they do ask how much they are and if they can work with their fee. Good Luck

Just because a therapist doesnt have gender experience doesnt mean they cant be of help to you. My entire team had no gender experience until I came along they sure do now.

Just like us learning about ourselves, a therapist can learn along the way, too...

The only drawback with that is that sometimes the regular therapist ends up training on your dime...

You can get a great therapist anywhere if you have the money...trouble is that so many of us don't have the financial resources to hire a top of the line therapist.

That's not to say that we won't get a good one, though.....

You're a girl....do what girls do......shop....shop....shop!

Go on line..seek them out...e-mails are free! Use it!

Good luck, Baby....

HUGGS!

I have found that a lot of people who work in this area are truly dedicated to helping us.

My therapist told me that we could work out what I could afford to pay and didn't charge me at all during the worst of my financial plight - I do plan to pay her back if she will accept it.

My lab work is done at a GLBT center for the actual cost they pay the lab $100 for the complete blood work.

And the Endo - what a sweetheart, so nice and friendly and makes us all feel like we are beautiful ladies - FREE - he donates his time completely - he is very good, and just cares that much about helping those of us who cannot afford his services any other way.

Shop around - there are good prices available for real quality not just someone trying to make a buck.

Love ya,

Sally

Thank you all for your advice, I have called a few places around that are known for being good with people transitioning, but most around town are rather rude with their prices, but i have a list of a few to call tommorrow even if some aren't specialists in the field if they will work with me, I hope to find a place as soon as possible - so I will be calling many therapists and thank you it is nice to find out some therapists will work with my situation...

Thanks
