President Mandates Opm To Protect Gender Identity

With the turn of the year, the Obama administration, through the Office of Personnel Management, has started to list gender identity among the classes protected by federal Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies. By including gender identity as a protected class, the government has taken a significant step toward ending employment discrimination of LGBT people in the federal workforce.

That's great! Another step forward. As many states and local government bodies mimic the federal policies, this will soon trickle down. Those

government bodies will, in turn, impose those rules on their contractors. This has implications far beyond federal employees.

You're welcome! I am retiring the end of 2010 and have no plans to come out at work, but for the younsgters like Astro_Liz who are just starting their careers, this is a watershed decision for Federal workers.

Unfortunately, it's only on a federal level...hopefully it will trickle down to other forms of employment....

The really good part is that once the government adopts this they will require it of their contractors and subcontractors. Then the contractors will have to require it from their vendors, and so on down the line. Can't really help the mom and pop shops unless a federal law is passed, but heck, this will take care of 75% of the issues in short order.

But on an entirely selfish level I work for an electrical concern that only employs 6 of us...Owned by the boss...

HUuuummmmm...but we DO sell to contractors that do city, state and federal jobs.....

Maybe...just maybe...
